Cavs 06-07 season thread

From the ABJ:

Laugh It Off
Jan 22 - David Wesley has fallen out of the Cavs' rotation. Since then he has used constant joking and laughter as his defense mechanism. It has seemed inappropriate at times, his jovial attitude before, after and even during games when the rest of his teammates are solemn or seemingly should be.

"It's a very difficult situation for me," Wesley said. "I try to laugh and joke to keep myself in it, if I was feeling sorry for myself and down in the mouth it wouldn't help me at all."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Showcasing Sasha?
Jan 22 - A conspiracy theorist might suggest that the Cavs were showcasing Sasha Pavlovic a little Saturday, as the Warriors might be interesting in making more deals before next month's trade deadline, and the Cavs might have lingering interest in Sarunas Jasikevicius.

Pavlovic's talents might be more suited to a Western Conference running team. Though it worked out for the Cavs as Pavlovic had 13 points in a season-high 29 minutes and was key in the late push.

Rookie Brown prefers injured list

Guard's leg injured. Not playing implies he's performing poorly

By Brian Windhorst

OAKLAND, CALIF - It isn't often you hear about a player who wishes that he were listed on the injury report.
Such is the bizarre injury and the bizarre situation in which Cavaliers rookie guard Shannon Brown finds himself.
As the Cavs struggled during the past week on their rough Western road trip and went through offensive woes and a brief Larry Hughes injury, plenty of fans wondered just where the first-round draft pick was. The answer was totally unavailable.

Cavs know erratic play hindered trip

Monday, January 22, 2007 Branson Wright

Plain Dealer Reporter
Oakland, Calif. -- The Cavaliers closed their seven-game West Coast trip in dramatic fashion with an impressive 106-104 overtime victory over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night.
The win gave the Cavs, who began the trip Jan. 9 with a victory in Sacramento, a 3-4 mark out west.

Dead legs is my only reasoning for tonites lack luster performance...

They got killed on the glass and Orlando was beating them off the dribble and shot the ball welll...

Overall a very ugly game...

Hopefully they can get some rest and get back to hitting a decent percentage of shots and get back to wining games with a consistent basis...

I don't have much hope for this team...they rarely look good even in wins...theres no killer instinct...I get so frustrated watching them get big leads only to let teams fight all the way back and the Cavs eithe blowing it or barely squeeking by....they show little emotion, and play a boring brand of bball especially on the offensive end.....the only thing that gives me a little hope is how open the east is....I think with the right coach, the Cavs could become an elite team

I'm inclined to agree with you here. I'm realing hoping Ferry works out some kind of deal to shake things up because the way this team plays on the road, I don't see us getting far...even with the east as bad as it is.

At this point there are some points of concerns and some signs of hope...

It helps being in the East and teams playing our style of ball. We struggle against teams that run like the Suns, Mavs, Seattle, etc...

We honestly havent seen LBJ at his best all season...He has had some decent games, but he isnt shooting the ball very well at all from behind the arc and from the free throw line.

Larry had a nice game tonite and I think he realizes he needs to drive the ball more.

I think Gibby is getting primed to step up and hit some big shots and take over for Snow. I think Brown is still slow playing him so he doesnt wear down for the end of the season.

Gooden and Z have had their ups and downs...

Wildthing is giving all he has out there and is honestly our 2nd best player IMO in terms of value to the team...

Sasha has shown some good minutes the last 2 nites and could very well of upped his trade value for a guy like magette or Jasikevicius that would help the team tremendously.

Also Donyell, DJ, Snow, Wesley will step up down the stretch as that is vetran time and the first 3 did that for us last year...

Overall I think the team has been playing some pretty good defense and it is just a matter of getting the team going on offense. They have guys that can hit open jumpers, guys that can take it to the rack and one guy that can put up 50 on a given nite, but is barely cracking 30 on a regular basis, and the guys arent knocking down the assist he is trying to dish out.

RICK SCUTERI ASSOCIATED PRESS Coach Mike Brown has struggled to implement a consistent offensive scheme with the Cavaliers.

CLEVELAND ? The Cavaliers have been dreaming bigger than last year?s second-round playoff exit. They want an NBA title. Yet halfway through the season, their record is identical to last year?s after 41 games.

Couple things from the article...

We are averaging 94.4 pts per game good for 24th in the league.

We are giving up 93.4 pt per game good for 5th in the league.

We are averaging 43.3 rbs per game good for 4th in the league.

We are shooting 68.4 % from the the free throw line good for dead last.

Here is what I make of this. If we can up our scoring by a couple points per game by either LBJ upping his scoring from 26 to around 30 in the second part of the year and up our free throw percentage to about 72/73 then we are going to be getting about 5-6 more points a game and I believe we are something like 13-1 when we score 100 pts...

Then throw in our good defense and we could be looking at going on a nice little stretch of wins...Hopefully the team catches a 2nd wind after the all-star break as well...

CBF,
I agree with you that Wildthing has been our 2nd most important player. It's amzingly clear that LeBron goes to the rack more when AV's on the court. His picks for LBJ make the offense take less of those stupid deep shots.

The best way to increase the scoring4-6 more points a game is getting Snow on the bench more. I get so f'n aggravated looking at the box score every game and seeing 1-3 or 0-2. You can't go anywhere in this league when you get so little from your pg. Sure his defense is ok, but no where near as good as it used to be. He can't even handle the ball well anymore. No way he deserves 27 min a game. AV only get 22 min/game.

Screw Snow, screw Hughes and screw Brown.

Ok, rant over.

I honestly thing they are just easing Gibby into that role or they are looking to trade for Z's buddy...

I rationalize the reasoning behind Gibby not getting more pt is that they don't want him to hit that rookie wall and get worn out...So by the end of the season I expect him to get more minutes...

I think we could make a big move around the deadline and put us over the top with a Magette or Z's buddy...

As for screw Hughes I am not ready to go there just yet...He knows that he needs to get to the rack more and I think he has been doing that more...I also would like to see him and LBJ get a little more chemistry rather than being on oppositie sides of the court watching the other fire a jumper or drive to the hole...

I agree with pretty much everything here, though I'm probably a little closer to "screw Hughes". I'm getting incredibly tired of looking at the boxscores and seeing "3-12" or "5-15" next to his name. Admittedly, I've only been able to watch a handful of Cavs games over here, but the few times I've seen them, Hughes seems to be playing a little out of control at times (rushing shots, flailing into the lane, etc.), which is bad news for such a fragile player. Hopefully that changes, but it's getting a little far into the season to hold out much hope for that.

As far as trades go, some kind of move needs to be done. I'd be ecstatic to get Maggette, even if it means giving up Gooden and somebody else. Wild Thing is ready to step into Drew's spot. He just brings to much enery and fire to the game to keep off the floor. I'm not too sure about Z's buddy. I haven't seen anything from him that impresses me much. Would definately be a step above Snow though. While Snow's leadership is nice to have, he is way too much of an offensive liability.

I also agree that Brown is wise in bringing Gibson along slowly and expect that come April-May, he'll be seeing significant minutes. He's the future at PG.

The announcers said that Hughes told them that he needs to get to the hoop more as he has been settling for too many jumpers. I think that ankle injury hurt him and he is finally starting to get back into the swing of things. I think at this point the whole team is tired and they are getting some well needed rest...

As for Z's buddy he doesnt seem to be slow like some had him pegged as and he does a nice job of knocking down open shots and penetrating when he needs too...

Honestly I would take Mike Conley over Eric Snow...

CLEVELAND - Don't ask Cavaliers coach Mike Brown to look to last season for goals.
His only concern is the trail that lies before the team for the second half of this season.
