Cavs 06-07 season thread

I was watching the spelling bee finals. Was there a basketball game tonight?

:tongue2:

Truly a career-highlight performance by LeBron. Scoring the last 25 points, including the game-winner with 2.2 seconds left in double-OT, makes this probably one of the top 5 playoff performances in NBA history.

Two games came to my mind as I was watching it. The 63 that a very young MJ (2nd year in the NBA, after missing 3/4 of the regular season with a broken foot) put on eventual champion Boston in the '86 playoffs, but Chicago lost the game in double OT and got swept. Plus it was only the first round.

The other game, which I don't think the TNT guys mentioned, was the '88 Conference semis with Boston. In Game 7, Dominique Wilkins scored 47 on 19-23 shooting, but Atlanta lost 118-116 as Larry Bird got 34, including 20 in the 4th quarter. Those guys just took turns scoring for almost the entire 4th quarter of a Game 7.

But the Cavs need to close out the series in order for the effort to retain its full historical value.

Great moment, and we should savor this victory, but we must win Saturday night. The Q is going to be electric and we have to go out there and smack them in their mouth. We're in the smae situation as last year with an opportunity to close it out on our homecourt. Just like last year, if we can't do it, I'd lay cash on us losing game 7 in Detroit.

I don't comment in this thread all the time but I read it most days. That game tonight was unbelievable. No one could touch LBJ tonight, no one. Any time he wants to go to the rack he can and he could easily average 40 points a game if he shoots more consistent free throws.

Whats up with Mike Brown. That guy is a complete dumbass! Even the announcers were dogging him late in that game, both for managing his time outs and not having a play called before the Cavs got the ball in position to win. The lineup of Gibson, LBJ, Varejo, Gooden and Marshall is by far the most productive lineup the Cavs can put out there right now. I love the way Gibson has come on as of late and Varejo just pisses the other teams off when he is in there. Z is too damn slow and I don't know what Hughes is thinking lately but right now he just sucks.

Living in Phoenix all I've heard for the past 2 weeks is how the NBA refs cheated the Suns out of a series. I'm having so much fun screaming for the Cavs and then asking "Hey, did Ginobili just score again?"

I agree with your lineup selection, but the Cavs have situational lineups in this case.

Offense - LBJ, Gibson, Damon Jones, Z, and Gooden. This gives us our best perimeter shooters (Damon and Gibson), our spot-up guys (Z and Gooden) and LeBron to put it all out.

Big Lineup - LBJ, Donyell, Sasha, Z, and Gooden. All over 6'8" (or around that much). Has a shooter in Donyell, Sasha's gotten better at driving.

Small Lineup - LBJ, E. Snow, Jones/Gibson, Hughes, Varejao. This is definitely more of a defensive lineup, but is fast and high-energy.

By mixing and matching these three lineups, you can get good results. I want Brown to use more of the bench and try to get these matchups- Damon Jones can hit a spot-on three for a specific play and not do too much damage when he's out there for a few minutes (think Ivan Harris a few years ago). Donyell can rebound. Yes, Pollard, Newble, Wesley, and Brown are useless.

That- and actually move the ball around more. It's a 24-second shot clock, and you need to pass the ball at least twice. That means that you shouldn't hold it for more then 5 seconds without passing or taking a shot if it's open. Risk the turnovers to get more ball movement and more quality shots, because the percentage of turnovers will be lower then forced, bad shots.

Exception to that rule is LeBron- he can do whatever he wants. Man, that was awesome.

The problem with putting Jones in is that the other team knows he's there and can score at will on him. With the way this team shoots, both free throws and from the field, rebounding and defense are an absolute must. I don't like the small lineup for Cleveland and I can only stand Z in there for short periods due to his inability to play defense and move very well on offense. Obviously guys need a breather, but Brown pulls 2 or 3 of his best options out of the game at the same time far, far too often.
