C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

CPD

He's only a freshman. He's limited to just one good hand. He's still developing talents for a certain NBA career. But there's no questioning Greg Oden's hoops lineage . . .

He's the next really big thing

Being so big draws such unwanted at tention to basketball's big men that they sometimes stand tall in opposition to their very size.
Wilt Chamberlain, an accomplished high jumper in college, wanted to prove he could score not only on dunks, but also on graceful fadeaway bank shots requiring a high degree of timing and coordination. Opponents loved the move because it took him out of rebounding position.

Anyone see tonight the SportsCenter at 6 (ET)? They had a segment on Greg Oden and how he compared to other dominant centers that once played in college and the NBA. They compared Oden to guys like Shaq, Patrick Ewing, and Zo Mourning (i think thats how you spell it). They said that it was still unfair to compare Oden with the rest because he has no full right hand yet but they did say that he has been working on his right handed and left handed jump hook. I dont care what anybody says, but if you can jump hook with both hands and use it well, thats dangerous. Right now, Oden is averaging 15.1 ppg, 12 or 13 rebs, and 3.6 blocks per game. Compared to all three NBA stars while they were in their freshman year in college, Oden is crushing all of their averages, with really just 1 hand. The only player close to Oden was Pat Ewing but Oden was still averaging 3 points more per game, 1 reb, and .4 blocks per game.

IMO, Oden will be the next Shaq that was 4-5 years ago, when he was dominant every game. Oden sure does have a mighty bright future ahead of him.

Basically, ever since we first heard about Greg Oden, he's been penciled in as the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft.
And Oden hasn't disappointed ? he's having a heck of a freshman season, despite missing Ohio State's first seven games due to injury.
But in case you haven't been watching, Oden's got some competition now in Kevin Durant. The 6-foot-9 freshman swingman from Texas is putting up gaudy numbers, too. Some people are even saying they'd take Durant over Oden with the No. 1 pick this summer.

Oden ignores NBA hype, has eyes on title

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Greg Oden says he wants to be an impact player in the NBA. He says he wants to go once he is confident he is a dominant player in college basketball. He says he wants to win a national championship at Ohio State. He says he's not ready to leave. Plenty of NBA personnel don't believe it for a second, or at least don't believe he'll turn down the chance to be the No. 1 pick in June's NBA draft when he and his family see all the dollars available to him.

COMMENTARY
Time could be ticking away on Oden?s stint in scarlet and gray
Sunday, January 28, 2007
BOB HUNTER

When Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was asked this week about his team?s chances of losing its way into the NBA?s top draft pick, he understood the question.
"Obviously, everyone knows what?s out there," Rivers said. I hate to break this to you, but Rivers wasn?t talking about Texas freshman Kevin Durant. Around the NBA, the quest to be last is casually called the "Greg Oden Sweepstakes." In pro basketball circles, an "if" rarely accompanies comments about Ohio State?s freshman center leaving this spring for the NBA.

Best is yet to come

OSU's Oden gets healthy, gets better, gets attention

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

COLUMBUS - It seems safe to say that Greg Oden's integration into the Ohio State basketball team is complete.
There seemed to be a feeling-out period after the 7-foot freshman center made his Dec. 2 debut, delayed by surgery in June on his right wrist. But in three of the previous four games going into the nationally televised battle Saturday night against Michigan State at Value City Arena, Oden carried the now-No. 5 Buckeyes.

Oden To Be Represented By Mike Conley?
28th January, 2007 - 2:03 pmDenver Post -
There have been more rumblings that the possibility of Greg Oden not declaring for this year's draft is a legitimate one.

When Oden does decides to go pro, expect him to be represented by his AAU coach and former Olympic champion Mike Conley.

Conley also is rumored to likely represent Duke sophomore forward Josh McRoberts if he leaves school early.

How to defend Oden

Columbus, Ohio ? Trying to stop Greg Oden is like playing a game of Russian roulette ? you pick your poison and hope you live to tell about it. After Saturday's game, MSU junior center Drew Naymick had no problem reciting the catalog of moves the all-world Ohio State freshman uses on the low post ? the head fake, the drop step, the off-arm hook ? "it's legal," Naymick said ? all performed with textbook precision.
"That's what makes him a great player," Naymick said.

Just heard that Greg may not play against Purdue b/c of going to be with a friend in Fort Wayne for something.

Caught the tail end of the story so don't know if there was a family death or what.

Also heard he was named Big10 player of the week.
