A really big man on campus
By John Henderson, The Denver Post
Thursday, January 18
COLUMBUS, Ohio The first name that comes to mind when you see 18-year-old Ohio State freshman Greg Oden up close is Abe Lincoln.
It's not just that Oden looks old for his age. It's not just his scraggly beard and sad, sleepy eyes that would make him look in place on the front of a penny. The comparison comes from an honesty, a grounded persona that made him a sports icon before anyone saw him block a layup all the way to Toledo.

College basketball Buckeyes? Oden tries to fit in

By Steve Batterson | Friday, January 19, 2007

Greg Oden?s biggest challenge this season isn?t adjusting to the college game.
It?s not even his recovery from the offseason wrist surgery that has slowed the Ohio State freshman?s offensive development.

Oden has discovered his toughest task is blending in with the rest of a talented team.

?I just want to be me, a regular person doing what I can to help our team,? Oden said. ?I?ve never tried to be anything other than a good teammate. That?s who I am.??

NBA scout impressions

On whether there's a chance Oden will return to Ohio State: "There's no way he can go back to school. That's just a smokescreen. He got injured once already. There's just too much money involved with someone like that.

On whether there's a chance Durant will get drafted ahead of Oden: "Not a chance. I'm not drafting small forwards in front of centers. Oden can dominate the game for the next 15 years. Durant is a star, but unless a team already has a young, great center, I don't see it."

Whats the latest timetable for the brace coming off the right hand or at least being able to use his right hand? Anyone have an idea?

If you pay hard attention, he is using his right hand some on the offensive end, but not yet from the free throw line. He also uses it to swat shots.

The brace has been shrinking in size and continues to week by week.

Defensive presence

Saturday, January 20, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- On defense, Greg Oden doesn't have to worry about Vaseline or socks on his hands. On defense, Oden is doing just what he's supposed to, which is why Ohio State coach Thad Matta told the Buckeyes during practice Friday that their half-court defense is even better than they think it is.
