C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

Wow....this is far more important to go visit the family of his best friend than this somewhat meaningless game. We all know that tOSU will be in the NCAA Tourney so nothing to worry about for 1 game. Condolenses go to his family and friends.

I have posted here several times about Greg -- my nephew is the one who was killed Saturday. It is a horrible tragedy for all of us and we are coping the best we can right now. Travis was an exceptional golfer with a very bright future ahead of him.

Travis and Greg were more than best friends. As Greg said at my parents' house last night -- all Travis ever wanted was to be my friend and nothing else. They had so many plans to live together in the future and be the best of friends -- and all that was taken so very quickly. Coach Matta is bringing Greg back after practice tomorrow for the visitation and then the funeral Wednesday AM -- Greg is a pall bearer and I cannot imagine how difficult this will be for him. He is so closed and quiet about everything but he has to let it out eventually. They are planning to drive to Purdue after the service and Greg will play -- that is what Travis would want him to do. I imagine there will be a little extra motivation as Travis' sister, father, and grandfather (my dad) are planning to attend the game.

The young man who was driving came to see us with his parents last night and he is truly devastated. Please pray for him and his family as well as our family. The three boys had just gotten up from a nap and were going to pick up another friend to watch the OSU/MSU game. Travis never missed seeing one of Greg's games. None of the boys did anything that all of us have not done at some time -- drive too fast. Travis would never blame Todd and it would make him sick to see others doing that.

Guys -- Travis and Greg both are VERY special young men. Please enjoy the time you have watching Greg play and watching him interact with other people. The greatest testimony I have seen in the past two days is the number of people coming to pay respects at my parents' house -- probably 1000 over the day yesterday and today. The past three nights Travis' death has been the lead story on the Terre Haute news -- I can never remember a 19 year-old who impacted so many lives at such a young age being truly honored by an entire city.

In closing --- if you would like to help please pray for all of us. And if you are so inclined, we have set up the Travis James Smith Endowment Fund at the Terre Haute (IN) Boys and Girls Club which will assist underpriviledged kids and help support a youth golf program at the Club.

We miss Travis dearly and will for the rest of our lives. I just wanted to share with you how special he and Greg are to our family. Thanks.

Condolences to you hoopsfan, and the rest of the Smith family.

It is a tragedy when the young go before their time. I'm glad to hear about the outpouring of respects, the prayers of all us here are with you.
