C Byron 'B.J.' Mullens (Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo - Japan)

I would bet that this is not the first game that Mullens has picked up some "questionable" foul calls......usually those types of calls even out through a course of a game......it is obvious from the articles and personal accounts of the game that Mullens did not do a very good job of adjusting and playing through the calls. He will not get every call in D-1, lets hope he understands that.

Mullens most certainly did flatten that kid on purpose... Ran straight into him and lowered his shoulder while doing it... Very chippy. I, like RB, was disappointed with his attitude... Constantly complaining and working the officials, a technical foul for arguing/language, taunting the crowd at the end of the game and while walking off the court... He's going to have to grow up a lot... I think the refs definitely screwed up some calls, but he completely lost his cool a couple of times...

As far as his game, he moves very well for someone his size... He has soft hands and seems to be a very good passer, especially hitting the outlet man (which he did quickly and effectively). I would like to see his range a little more, but he had no reason to use it in this game... He, like most young big-men, is going to have to learn to a.) not go over the back on rebounds, and b.) stop bringing the ball below his waist in the paint. He had the ball slapped away several times that way (credit Graham's tenacity as well)...

Schuler was money for Graham... Stepped up and hit big shots whenever they needed him... Graham's a tough match-up because at any given time they can put 5 guys on the floor that can dribble and shoot... Several kids were "onions" last night to quote Bill Raftery... They moved extremely well without the ball as well... Lots of good cuts to the hole for open shots...

I stuck around and watched the Alter/Chaminade-Julienne game as well (Alter won an ugly one), and Graham should have no problem whatsoever with Alter... They have one guy who could be a tough match-up (6-6 Ryan Siggins, dad played at UD), but that's only because he's got a good jumper and is big enough to get it off... But Alter isn't overly impressive and their bigs don't play big...

Good report and that's how I saw most of it as well. I'm sure BJ was getting fouled a bit but then again, the refs didn't call 2 or 3 over the backs that were pretty bad later in the game. The refs weren't the best but they definetly went both ways. Nelson left his feet and slammed into Shuler twice and it was the most obvious call in the world, yet they missed it. Shoot, Canal was trying to foul to get Graham on the line and the refs weren't calling it. Can't wait for tomorrows game though.

Edit: Didn't yet see your post Junkie...that sums it up

I was just curious what type of defense they used...RB or 22?

B.J. played a one man zone... Others manned up... B.J. really only defended when they tried to come into the paint... That's one reason why Graham was able to make cuts and drive and kick for open shots most of the day... They just about always had someone open on the wing...

I think the main thing that Canal can complain about was the refs botching a 1-and-1 call in the 4th... Graham missed the front end and Canal boarded, but the refs were treating it as two shots. They conferred and determined it to be a jump-ball, which gave it back to Graham... The Falcons then hit a 3 to really push out the lead to 8 or 9 with about 2 minutes left...

I had no clue what happened then...I thought the turning point was Mullens getting the technical. After that happened, Graham took a commanding lead and Canal got desperate.

CANAL WINCHESTER - The hallmark of a talented player is his ability to change the complexion of a game. B.J. Mullens' 7-foot-1 frame and his skills in the paint helped him do that nearly every time he stepped onto the floor this season.

Boys All-Metro team: Mullens grounded, even at 7 feet 1
OSU recruit maintains humility despite celebrity status at Canal

The Columbus Dispatch

Unlike his peers, B.J. Mullens can't disappear into a crowd and become just another teenager.
At 7 feet 1, that's simply not feasible. Anonymity has gradually eluded Mullens since the summer before entering ninth grade when he made an oral commitment to play basketball at Ohio State.
"Everything you do is in the spotlight and you've really got to watch everything you do because people put you under a magnifying glass," he said. "People look up to you and you can't do anything to let them down."

Thanks for the vid, Oregon, Mullens is a super athlete for a 7 footer, he also seems to have great hands and does not seem to be too bad about bringing the ball down where the height challenged competition can get at it. He'll sure look good in S&G.

The thing I really like about Mullens is that he plays like he's bigger than everyone else. When he gets it within a couple feet of the basket he tries to tear the rim off instead of laying one up. A little bit like Oden in the fact that he really goes at the rim. We'll see how he does against taller and stronger competition before I put him around Greg's talent though. He moves better offensively than Greg did in my opinion though.
