High school boys basketball: Mullens able to leave mark in Milwaukee

Thursday, March 27, 2008 3:29 AM

FROM STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
MILWAUKEE -- Canal Winchester's B.J. Mullens dunked on two of the first three possessions and finished with 12 points, but his West team fell to the East 107-102 in the McDonald's All-American game last night before 10,914 in the Bradley Center.
The 7-foot-1, 260-pound Ohio State recruit went 5 of 6 from the field, grabbed three rebounds and blocked a shot. He didn't play in the final six minutes when guards dominated the action.

CANAL WINCHESTER - What's it like being B.J. Mullens? He's mobbed, surrounded, harassed and badgered. He draws attention like a lightbulb attracts insects. He handles the frenzy ... and then he steps onto the basketball court. What's it like being Emilee Harmon? She's been asked the question in more ways than she thought possible. One of the best girls basketball players to take the floor in Pickerington deftly fends off a nonstop stream of inquiries about where she'll play college basketball.

Never a good game for big men to participate in.

Agree, but he showed out in the time he was in there...The only thing that bothered me a little was Samuels being able to push him around for positioning a little bit, but it was a all-star game so he wasn't going all out...

Hopefully next year when he goes hard for every minute he is on the floor we see the freak that he really is...

I also really don't understand why there isn't more hype over him...7 footer that moves great, has great athletic ability has a decent touch, attacks the rim when he dunks, get rebounds all over, has hands to be able to snatch the ball and will probably average about 2.5 blocks/game...

I was impressed by his athletic ability and his hands.......he needs to get stronger in the upper body.....a summer in the strength program will do him wonders.....

Agreed, that to go along with some work on defensive positioning, and offensive footwork and we are going to see a great player come big ten season...Think he has a great shot along with Buford and Roe(MSU) to be the newcomer of the year in the league next year...

Here is what NBAdraft.net had to say about Mullens game...

BJ Mullens (Ohio State) -- 12 points on (5-6 fg) 3 reb --- Mullens is so athletic and skilled you might wonder why he doesn't dominate even more so (granted he played just 13 min). The kid is a legitimate 7'1" with a long wingspan, very good speed, and he is a very good leaper. There aren't too many centers that can go between their legs and dunk the ball. He also is a capable outside shooter and has a soft touch around the rim. Mullens did show extremely well in the game; nobody could handle him on the inside. Mullens missed just one shot and would have had more impressive statistics had he received more than 13 minutes of time.

Worth The Wait

Nearly four years after becoming Thad Matta?s first recruit at Ohio State, Canal Winchester center B.J. Mullens is ready for the big time
By: Ryan Canner-O?Mealy 3/31/08

Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta was hired by the Buckeyes on July 7, 2004. The next day, he was recruiting at an adidas camp in Atlanta to start replenishing his roster. Almost immediately, one player caught his eye.

?I?m watching this young, skinny kid shoot a nice jump hook that goes in, then the next time down he drop steps and dunks,? Matta says. ?I?m thinking, ?If we put 15 to 20 pounds on him, he can help us out.??

Matta got more excited when he looked down at his program and realized the player he?d been watching, B.J. Mullens, hailed from the Columbus area. Matta assumed Mullens was a junior or senior and immediately called one of his assistant coaches to inform him of the discovery.

?He said, ?Thad, look at the program again. Look what year he is,?? Matta recalls.

?I was surprised you could even receive a scholarship offer as a freshman,? Mullens says. ?But I wanted to be his first commit at Ohio State. Even now, I joke with coach that I?m the reason why everyone else started committing to him.?

B. J. Parade All-American also

Blade
Buford is joined on the Parade first team by fellow Ohio State recruit B.J. Mullens, a 7-1 center from Ohio's Canal Winchester High School. Brandon Jennings, a 6-2 guard from Oak Hill Academy, a prep school in Virginia, is the 2008 Parade boys' player of the year.

Congrats to B. J. along with Buford for this honor.

He is just a freak athletically...Just needs to refine his game and put forth effort at all times he will be a stud...

I am thinking that Rivals might be moving him up to number 1 or 2 player when their final rankings come out...They said he would move up and he is 4th right now...A big game in the Jordan game and he will see that move to the top...

Honestly I think he should be 1 or 2...There really isn't anyone that impresses me as the number 1 player...I like Holiday and Hopson, but Mullens brings more to the table with his offense and defensive play...

I think Monroe will drop due to his lack of showing in these all star games...He has the potential to be a top player, but has to put it together, and not be so passive...

Derozan is the most athletic player in the class, and reminds me a lot of Cook with even more athleticism, but he is still pretty raw with his all around game...

If I were ranking them it would look like Holiday, Mullens, Hopson, Aminu, Derozan, Jennings, Samuels, Green, Monroe, Roe, Warren, Evans, Buford, Ebanks, Walker or something like that...That is basically going off guys that I have seen watching these all star games...
