C Amir Williams (Worcester Wolves - England)

Amir Williams

Williams will give the Buckeyes some much-needed depth inside. The 6-foot-9 center from Beverly Hills, Mich., was a McDonald's All-American his senior year in high school and figures to help replace Lauderdale down low.

"Amir can spend his freshman year either working alongside (Jared) Sullinger or being his backup," Helwagen said. "And then, theoretically, by his sophomore year, he'll have a chance to be the guy inside for the Buckeyes."

As a freshman, Williams won't have the size to be a dominant physical presence inside, but his athleticism and ability to run the floor make him a threat on both ends of the court.

"He should give Ohio State some much needed size down in the paint," Noon said. "But he's not going to be a banger, at least at first."

OSU basketball freshman awaits grades, ACT result
Tuesday, June 21, 2011
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch

Freshman basketball player Amir Williams' arrival at Ohio State has been delayed while the NCAA processes his final grades and ACT score to determine his eligibility, his high school coach said yesterday.

Kurt Keener, coach at Detroit Country Day School in Birmingham, Mich., said that the delay could be resolved by Friday, when Williams expects to learn his ACT score, and that the 6-foot-10 center could be enrolled at Ohio State as soon as Monday.

Williams did not finish high school classes until June 9, and he took the ACT exam a second time on June 11, Keener said.

"Don't anticipate there will be any issue with him being ineligible," Keener said. "This is just a backup with the schedule."

Williams eligible for Ohio State
Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Freshman Amir Williams is now eligible and will report to Ohio State for the second session of summer school on July 25, an OSU source said yesterday.

"Everything settled, got everything under control," the 6-foot-11 Williams posted on his Twitter account.

Williams' arrival had been delayed because the NCAA needed to process his ACT score and final grades from Detroit Country Day School, his high-school coach, Kurt Keener, told The Dispatch last week.

The other four freshmen in Ohio State's highly rated recruiting class - Trey McDonald, LaQuinton Ross, Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson - reported on June 19 and began summer classes the next day.

The other 4 freshman got a one month head start on their enrollment over Williams.

What is it besides classes that the other 4 recruits did during this time? If nothing, what is the advantage to enrolling early?
I would think taking a summer class or two, getting used college life, and may be most important of all getting to know your teammates better and playing some ball with them. What's there to do at home during the summer when it's time to go to college:huh:

I guess I just would prefer Williams route. He still gets in for the 2nd part of summer school courses. So he'll still be able to take 1-2 classes before the real school year starts, which is more then most incoming freshman are able to claim.

As a 18 year old kid I think i'd enjoy spending at least one month at home seeing my friends for awhile before going our separate ways... so long as I wasn't missing any team practice.

If these guys are serious about winning they get here as soon as they can and try to soak up as much information and knowledge about there sport and lifestyle so they are acclimated by the time fall qtr starts.

If you are a regular student, I understand wanting to delay your enrollment, but if you are a student athlete, you should get to school asap to start preparing for their freshman season. Hell, we see guys for football report as early as spring qtr to try to get a jump on their competition.

SEVEN FOOT SUB?

We might end up with a 7 footer here with Amir. He was listed at 6'9" as a junior in HS, then 6'10" as a senior, now he's a legit 6'11" and he's only 18 years old. I wouldn't be surprised to see Amir continue to grow a bit and reach 7 foot. You can tell by his long arms and huge hands that he's got potential to grow some more.

If Amir can add about 15-20lbs to his frame, and if he hangs around for a couple years, he could really be a dominate big man in the B1G. His AAU coach stated about a month ago that Amir was up to 238lbs but he was listed on the roster as 220lbs. I think around 240 would be ideal for his frame.

The more I watch other HS bigs, the more I realize just how good Williams could be. He moves around like a SF but has a longer wingspan than Lauderdale. _____________Me likey

What do you think of Amir's game and how it will translate as a freshman with Sully and Deisel eating mad minutes in the post?

I have not seen him play in person. All I know about him is what I have read and therefore probably should reserve judgment. I do not see Thomas eating up any minutes in the post on offense. When Sullinger is not playing the post, Williams probably will be but you have to remember he is a freshman.

When I was talking about Thomas 'eating up minutes in the post' I was referring more to him and Sully being on the floor at the same time along with a guard and 2 wings or 2 guards and a wing.

I don't think that Deshaun will play much at SF with Williams and Sully in the game so for the most part, Williams will only get minutes when either Thomas or Sully are getting a breather. That's what I meant. Make sense?
