I saw him play against Deshaun Thomas a few weeks ago and what really stood out about Williams was his outlet passes. He would grab a rebound, pivot, and zip a pass 50 feet on the money to a streak guard. It was impressive to see.

Turner heads west, Matta ... where?

Evan Turner and two Ohio State basketball staffers had a 7 a.m. flight today to Los Angeles, where Turner is a finalist for the Wooden Award that will be presented Friday night by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.

Coach Thad Matta had planned on accompanying Turner to the ceremony -- as he did Greg Oden three years ago -- until he realized today is the first day in a small window of opportunity this spring that he can hit the road and talk to recruits and their parents.

No word who tops Matta's must-see list today, but I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit Country Day big man Amir Williams is on it. Matta is looking for size in the 2011 class, there isn't much available, and the 6-foot-10 Williams fits the bill.

Ohio State coaches can have off-campus contact with recruits and their parents today through Sunday and again April 16-21. After that, they can't see them again off campus until the July evaluation periods.

Vaught's Views: Michigan prep center interested in Kentucky
By LARRY VAUGHT

June 17, 2010

Amir Williams, a 6-9, 210-pound center from Birmingham, Mich., says Kentucky ?is recruiting me pretty heavy? and says he has definite interest in playing for coach John Calipari.

?They have a great coaching staff. They know how to get and develop guys to get you ready for the league (NBA). I think it would be a great college to go to and a great coach to play for if that is what I decided,? said Williams, who is in San Antonio to try out for a spot on the 12-member team that will represent the United States at the eight-team FIBA Americas Under 18 Championship there June 26-30.

?My goal is to get to the NBA and I have to look and see what coaches can send you to the league. Coach Cal is one of those coaches who has proven he can do that.?

Williams, the fourth-ranked center in the 2011 class by Scout.com, says good team chemistry is important to him, but he?s not worried that Calipari has developed too many ?one-and-done? players since he would love to be in position to have the same opportunity.

?A one-and-done is a great thing, but staying in college for several years can also be a good thing,? Williams said. ?I have no clue yet what I would do. I haven?t even picked a school yet.?

Among the schools recruiting Williams are Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, UCLA, Pittsburgh, Texas, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke and North Carolina. That?s why he says rumors that he might sign in the fall are wrong.

?There are too many schools for me to even narrow down my list right now. It might be late in my senior season when I decide. I might end up at the wrong school if I rush. I want to take my time and make sure I get this right,? he said.

'Bigs' buy in to Calipari's pitch
Point guards aren't UK coach's only specialty
By Jerry Tipton / [email protected]

CLEVELAND ? Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans and John Wall make Kentucky Coach John Calipari synonymous with NBA-bound point guards. That's an invaluable tool in recruiting.

As the King City Classic camp for highly regarded prospects ended Friday, it became clear that Calipari's reputation for developing NBA-ready players extends beyond flashy point guards.

"He put two 'bigs' in the draft this year," said Amir Williams, a 6-foot-10 center from Detroit. "... It's looking like he's getting 'bigs' in the pros. So it's looking good for him."

And Williams, along with other big men attending the King City Classic, see Calipari as more than a point guard Svengali. Like the smaller floor leaders, the "bigs," to borrow current basketball vernacular, want to be on the fast track to the NBA, too.

"That's real important," Williams said. "I want to go to a school that will use their 'bigs,' develop their 'bigs' and put them in the pros."
