Committed to OSU.

Free ESPN - Amir Williams commits to Ohio State

The best remaining post player, ESPNU 100 C Amir Williams, has signed with Ohio State and coach Thad Matta. The 6-foot-10, 220-pounder from Birmingham, Mich., also considered Purdue, DePaul and Michigan before narrowing his choices to the Buckeyes and Gators.

"I felt very comfortable with coach Matta, his coaching staff and the players. They were like a family," said Williams, who is the No. 2 center in the country. "My parents liked everything better than I did. They loved the school, the academic support and the basketball program."

The Buckeyes are getting a very athletic and mobile post player in Williams who fits the Buckeyes' system and has the potential to be an immediate impact player. Williams runs the floor extremely well and finishes above the rim with a clear path or from drop-off passes created by dribble penetration. He rebounds on both ends, can make open shots to about 15 feet and can face and drive to the basket from short distances, which will be perfect in Ohio State's spread offensive attack that includes multiple set plays with a variety of ball screens and great spacing. Williams also makes his presence felt on the defensive end because he can guard both post positions with the ability to block shots in and out of his area. He will be terrific in the Buckeyes' full- and half-court pressure with his ability to protect the rim and apply ball pressure to opposing post players. Williams has off-the-charts potential and upside, but must add strength to his frame and be more consistent to take his game to the next level.

"Coach Matta told me they needed an athletic center that can play right away because of the graduation of power forward/center Dallas Lauderdale and the possibility of Jared Sullinger being one and done," said Williams.

He joins three other ESPNU 100 players in the Buckeyes' 2011 class which has added great perimeter size, starting with point guard Shannon Scott (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) and a pair of 6-7 wings in Sam Thompson (Chicago/Whitney Young) and LaQuinton Ross (Jackson, Miss./Life Center Academy). Plus, 6-9 center Trey McDonald (Battle Creek, Mich./Battle Creek Central) will provide the Buckeyes with a different type of center. McDonald is more of a power player, while Williams is very explosive around the rim. Matta and his staff have done a great job of convincing two post players from what Buckeyes fans refer to as the "state up north" to come to Columbus.

Basketball Buckeyes add recruit Amir Williams and breaking down Ohio State's big win at Florida | cleveland.com

We're still in the heart of football season, but this has been a very good stretch for Ohio State basketball.

Monday, the Buckeyes officially announced the signing of LaQuinton Ross, a 6-foot-7 scorer from Mississippi. That brought Ohio State's 2011 recruiting class to four. Tuesday night, the No. 4 Buckeyes went to Florida and beat the No. 9 Gators 93-75. Today, Ohio State added a fifth player to its recruiting class, as Detroit center Amir Williams announced at his school that he picked the Buckeyes over Florida.

"We are thrilled to cap off our 2011 class by filling a major need at the center position," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "He is a big man that can produce offensively and have a major presence defensively. Amir chose Ohio State for all the right reasons and I am confident he will be very successful as a Buckeye."

That brings the Buckeyes' recruiting class to five, taking up all the scholarships Matta had available.

To recap that group:

* Amir Williams, a 6-9, 210-pound center from Detroit, ranked by Scout.com as the No. 36 player in this class and a four-star recruit

* Shannon Scott, a 6-1, 180-pound point guard from Georgia who is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 38 player in this class and a four-star recruit

* Sam Thompson, a 6-6, 180-pound forward from Chicago who is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 48 player in this class and a four-star recruit

* LaQuinton Ross, 6-7, 185-pound forward from Mississippi now going to school in New Jersey who is ranked by Scout as the No. 63 player in this class and a four-star recruit

* Trey McDonald, a 6-9, 230-pound power forward from Michigan who is ranked by Scout.com as a three-star recruit

Detroit Country Day star Amir Williams picks Ohio State | detnews.com

Tom Markowski / The Detroit News

Amir Williams of Detroit Country Day signed with Ohio State on Wednesday, the final day of the early signing period. Williams had narrowed his choices to OSU and Florida this past weekend, eliminating Purdue and Michigan.

Williams, a 6-10 center, averaged 14.7 points and 10 rebounds last season. He helped lead Country Day to the Class B title and was selected to first team all-state by The Detroit News.

"I'm feeling pretty good right now," Williams said. "I just felt comfortable with everything they were telling me at Ohio State. I felt comfortable with the players and the coaching staff. They've been successful in sending a lot of good players to the pros and I hope to get the NBA one day."

Williams said distance from home was not a factor in his decision to turn down Florida.

Williams said he didn't select U-M because he didn't think he'd fit properly in their system.
