Bucknuts and Scout Part ways

No one from the Scout side of things saw this coming. It was a complete surprise. I guess the only question is now is what will happen with the new site at Scout?

It is a poor show from both sides. Honestly I like Duane and the boys but their new website is half baked right now. They are having issues with log ins, no transfer of post numbers or profiles of clients, clock times, dates of e-mails, mass mailing showing everyones e-mail address (security issues). This is stuff that they should have thought about long before they officially launched. Seriously, it is just doing a field download off the server to pull and transfer that information into a spread sheet.

Going to wait for a while but it sure looks like we have seen this show before cough cough...BII...cough cough...

OSU football site Bucknuts goes independent
Dayton Business Journal - 3:14 PM EST Friday

Bucknuts, a news and commentary Web site for The Ohio State University football, has separated from former owner Scout Media Inc.

The Dayton-based company, The Bucknuts Media Network, launched its new Web site today, ending its relationship with Scout, which is owned by Fox Sports Interactive Media LLC.

"There were some points of contention between us and the network and we just decided that we were within our rights to make this move," "said Steve Helwagen, managing editor of the Web site.

Bucknuts officials are hopeful the move will be beneficial as it will give them greater flexibility.

Helwagen said Bucknuts was able to bring its entire staff -- seven full-time workers and at least five part-time -- with it in its transition.

The Web site has grown in recent years, from 1,400 subscriptions when Helwagen joined the company three years ago to at least 5,000 subscriptions today.

Bucknuts, unaffiliated with The Ohio State University, calls itself the "unauthorized Ohio State sports site."

Scout Publishing will continue to produce Bucknuts magazine, which covers Ohio State athletics.

The Ohio State football team is ranked tops in the country and is slated to play in the BCS Football National Championship Game Jan. 8, 2007 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.

In a thread about the likelihood of the old Scout BN board dying away, following Steve Helwagen's midnight dash away from Scout - on BN:

HollywoodBuckeye07 said:
:5% of the people on this board are knowledgeable posters, ever since milani and the gang left for buckeyeplanet it went downhill ever since .

Which he put in play as a follow up to this gem - which was then contested.
This board died years ago...
There is a little soul-searching going on in Scout/BN land tonight.
A poll is up asking those reading whether they are staying with Scout or Leaving, or Both ...

LawBuckeye has this to say about the midnight run from Scout

Re: POLL: Should we stay or should we go?

Yes, but, if completely leaving the Scout network is what you thought he meant, then you certainly need to be employed by the CIA as a codebreaker.

Considering the Scout people themselves had NO idea this was coming, I really doubt any of us did either. Well, outside codebreakers like you alum

I was wondering what I was going to fill some time with between Sunday and the first Bowl Game - following this story should keep me perfectly occupied.

Just saw on the BN (Scout) forum that Greg Powers was tapped for the new Scout OSU Staff.
Lichtenfels praises Greg's past work at Buckeye Planet.

That is a HUGE move for the Scout folks...Greg doesn't post on BP anymore, but he is here almost every day discussing prospects and exchanging news. In what is known as an unscrupulous business, Greg Powers is a stand up guy with the best interests of the kids always in mind.

If you ever want to get an early jump on recruits, pay attention to the underclassman GP highlights.

dang, you beat me to it...

i personally have nothing against the former BN staff, though i am of the opinion that with regards to the message boards, the inmates took over the asylum a long time ago... i signed up at the new BN, but i'm taking a wait and see approach... perhaps the Scout site will revert back to the good old days... or perhaps it will wither and die...

from what i gleaned from the Scout.com Announcement, this break was anything but clean... there will be a legal battle...

I cannot believe that an effective start up has the money to take on Scout Network and their corporate owners, Fox.

good point, Sandgk!

ALum82 nominated me to be a mod on the Scout board, since they apparently will be needing new ones... should i take it?

For their Political Discussion board - that would be a sooper idea :p
(Though seriously, from what I read over there, they do need some , er, less active moderation. Some folks are complaining about their posts being edited by the new Scout Buckeye board regime).

Just read the Scout blurb on their front page comparing this to the Browns leaving Cleveland. Pretty strong stuff.

I got a PM offering me 20% off an annual subscription if I do my "Observations" thread over there. But I also have to handle their mail-order Nacho concession - and they don't have a romper room so I would have to find my own upskirt shots of Brittany Spears.

I'm mulling it over.
