BuckeyePlanet Discussion - All views welcome

I agree that it's become pretty much worthless.

How can a newbie know who is a high ranked member when it seems as if over half the members have maxed out medals?

Instead of medals, maybe a number that indicates that members ranking.

One bad thing about the rep system and I've gotten pms's about this is that many newer members are afraid to disagree with high ranking members in fear they will get dinged like crazy and the mob mentality set in.

I do see though that without the rep sys. many newbies could just run amuck by calling out more respected members at every whim.

I see the positives and negatives of the system but I remember back in the day(just last year) when I got a rep that was worth 2000 points and that was a big boost.

Maybe make rep power 1% or less of your total reputation.

As someone already posted in here. Disagreeing with a high ranking member doesn't get anyone dinged if they state their case intelligently and with proper research. It seems that it is just common sense that if you are going to disagree with someone (anyone) you need some facts to back up your case or else you will be perceived to be a dumbass (donny and TG05).
Newbies usually get dinged because they break the written and unwritten rules of BP. It might take them a little while to get the hang of all the unwritten rules, so these are the ones that we need to stop dinging newbies for unless they are repeating the problem after being warned through PM.
After reading most of this thread I still believe that we shouldn't lower the standards of BP to make this a friendlier place for new members. If a new member is worth their salt they will catch on and be fine, but if a new member doesn't get it they will think we're all dicks and go back to BN's. To me this is a fair trade.

One thing that would be cool with the rep system is if the rep icons could be based on the proportion of your rep compared to all the rep on BP (i.e. 21 has 10% of the total rep on BP or something like that), or maybe just replace the pictures with the users rep points or rank. It would be nice if half the board wasn't maxed out with the rep icons.

There's 19 pages of this thread, and I don't have the time or the interest to read it all. If this complaint has already been posted, then I apologize.

First, I want to say that this web page kicks ass. It kicks ass, it's free, and, most importantly, it kicks ass. Any web page where I can post my stupid computer rank, and the only complaint is "Temple is ahead of UNLV???" has got to kick ass. I think that's the definition of "kick ass." (I'll let someone else look it up.

However, the very first lesson I learned on this board was that the moderators like to keep the boards clean. Basically, don't start a new thread about something that already has a thread. According to the responses I got, I was very lucky in the light treatment I got. Now, every once in a while, I see a newbie start a thread about something that already has its own thread, and people bitch and complain, maybe even ding the new guy. Unfortunately, I can't say that I'm innocent of this. This part doesn't bother me so much. What bothers me is that after every game, we'd get 3-4 new threads popping up: "My impressions of this game," and "My observations." Most people would put these same observations and impressions in the official game thread, but 3-4 guys (typically "regulars" on BP) would find it necessary to start new threads for each game. I could be wrong, but they never seemed to get asked to post that in the official game threads.

Maybe there was a good reason for the new posts. Just because I couldn't see the reason doesn't mean there was no good reason. I'm not saying that the moderators shouldn't have allowed it to happen. But I think that its backwards that the newbies get lectures, while the regulars get "Wow - Great observations!"

Again, great web page. If nothing changes, I'll still be back as often as I get the chance. As long as I can log in, check the latest Buckeye news and discussions, I'll be back as often as I get the chance.

Zurp's complaint is probably valid. To be honest, I attempt to draw the line sometimes, and regular, respected posters get the benefit of the doubt. To me, Oh8ch's observations about the game shouldn't be buried inside of a 25 page game thread. But, Oh8ch has earned that respect. Additionally, his "Observation" threads have become a place to discuss the game and different observations from different people, and I don't think it is necessary to merge that. However, to be honest, if a newb started that same thread, and there were any other threads out there (aside from the game thread), I would merge it in a heartbeat. But, the newb hasn't earned the respect yet. It's threads like those, with his input, and Steve19's, and CinciBucks, and 21's, that make BP better than any other site.

To me rep serves two useful purposes:
1) separating someone from a newbie who has not contributed yet
2) sending someone a "good job" or "poor form" comment

the top of the rep rankings are somewhat useless considering how rep is thrown around (ie how clarity often used to slip from the first page of the rep leaders).

I often wish I could rep great posts 2-3x as much, and lighten how much rep I hand out for a good joke. Last night someone made a good joke, and I repped him, and it countered half of the negative rep they had.

I never thought of it that way, and it's a really good point. Thanks.

I don't know if this is possible, but what about a vCash kinda rep system. Where you can give as much or as a little of rep as you want to a poster. You have a sort of "bank roll" of rep points and once you spend them on good(or bad) posts, points get deducted from your point total. And if a moderator thinks a post is good he can give you points from a sort of BP bank(where it doesn't get deducted from his/her points). This way we can keep people from over using the system and keep the rep totals down to earth.

That would require extensive programming and isn't feasible. Now adding a 'half rep' would be something much easier to do.

Sorrry in advance for the late entry into this thread.

I joined BP in July of this year. I was told about it by a cousin who has been a member for a while.

This site has been a life saver to me. I moved down to GA this spring. Without BP, I would have gotten all my buckeye info from sports sites. Not nearly enough for me.

However, after getting my daily updates in the football forums, I noticed the open discussion. IMO, the open discussion lets members get to know each other alot better than the football forums. For creating a "family" atmosphere, the OD is great. I have nearly 1500 posts, and maybe one or two are of any substance. But I have a "home" on the internet.

As to the question of what to do to make it a better place? The new mods will surely help. I have had exchanges with all of them, and all were positive.

Congradulations to All the new MODS!!

I love BP.

p.s. where and how can I get a T-Shirt? I need a few.

There is one reason and one reason ONLY that the admins have access to the reputation comments and that is to correct abusive behavior. When someone crosses the line and threatens and/or uses abusive language we need the ability to determine/confirm what happened and who is guilty.
There are other abuses of the rep system as well.

For example, "sometimes" a group of people will form a "rep circle", where they rep each other constantly, say 10 times a week - not an abuse, per se, just not exactly within the spirit of the rep system. However, when certain members of the group form a "goon squad" and use their artificially increased rep power to blast other posters into the red, then we have a clear abuse. If you are involved in such a game, we'll eventually find out and ask you to stop (or maybe just drop you into the red, which will render your dings meaningless).

I usually do not check on people's reps, unless I see a rapid rise or drop in someone's level. I will also check on newbies' reps, to see why a guy with one post has already "earned" a red frownie face. Is he just a clumsy newbie, or is he a flamer? Or is he getting dinged for some stupid reason, like another poster doesn't like his avatar....

A few things that the newbies should remember about the rep system. When it first started, a person "maxxed out" at about 1,500 points, and it was rare for a positive rep to be worth as much as 100 points. Now, many members of the Planet can give 1,000,000+ points with a single rep. "Rep inflation" has thrown the system a bit out of whack, so if you are a newbie who is not getting rep, it is probably because many people are reluctant to "reward" you with a helmet full of buckeye leaves for one or two insightful or witty posts. Stick around, prove yourself over time, and the rep will start to flow your way. As a side note, a good way to make a name for yourself is to take on a special project, like game previews - if you are interested, please PM one of us, and we'll see if there is room for another "voice". Feel free to write your own "article" in the appropriate forum (Sloopy45, for example, did an excellent series on the greatest baseball players of all time, and of course many others have contributed articles on Buckeye football, basketball, and recruiting). However, make sure that it's good work, or you might end up in the red instead....

We used to have the medals for contributing to the page (the only way I know of to get a medal was by donating money). Are we done with those, or are they going to come back? Just curious.

I don't know what the relevance is to this thread. Just figured this was the "best-fit" thread for that question.

I believe Clarity is working on that (among many other things). They've been gone since the upgrade, in time they should be back.

I've been a member for over a year now, and I have not posted that much until recently. I found that once I started posting, that I was doing it in an irresponsible manner, and often still do. I think the rep system kept me in line. I even banned myself for a month for taking a discussion to a personal level - as some may recall.

I think it's difficult for new posters such as myself to find a niche on what topics to discuss. For instance, I feel very comfortable on the Cavs' thread because I feel I have a lot of input to add. But, on the other hand, when I ventured over to Political Discussions, I noticed that I was clearly out of my league - and got bashed for it rightfully so.

One thing I do take issue with is that it is difficult to have an opinion that may not be popular, especially if you are new. It seems as though, sometimes, an unpopular opinion is not welcome, no matter how respectful or outlined it is. I can think of 2-3 times where I took an unpopular opinion on purpose, didn't argue it very well, and got hammered when I pretty much asked for it. But there were other times that I felt, at least in my opinion, I was getting nailed because I was a newbie with an opinion that irked some.

As far as solution... I've been PM'd a few times about my posts, and have had meaningful discussions with some of the mods, including Mili if you can believe it. I found this to be the best way to keep someone like myself from acting irresponsibly.
