Buckeye Tailbacks - 2005 (official thread)

I think Pittman/Haw will have a good year at worst in my homeristic opinion. Both have great speed & vision and should be running behind a very improved OL. Schnittker seems like he will pick up where Brandon Joe left off as a big back for short yardage, and he may even have a little more speed than Joe (judging solely from the spring game however... anyone have measurables on the two guys?).

The guy that no one should sleep on is Freddie Lenix. I really see him coming in and getting a really good shot at gunner, but he's got serious speed and is 195 lbs so size will not be as much as an issue as with Wells. I think he could be a solid backup option.

He said he wanted to come in and try and get on the field as a RB.

Anderson is supposed to have some ability and probably will not be needed on defense this year.

We have a lot of young talent there at RB, but the only guy that is really proven is Pittman. I think he solidified his hold on the #1 spot in the Spring. He just looked like a starter out there in the SG.

Agreed. I think Pittman proved he is THE guy at RB, tho it seems Haw is a very capable #2. The biggest thing I saw was that #25 didn't seem undersized anymore. He isn't going to run over anybody, but he is able to run through contact much better. Last year you could tell he was a frosh that needed some time in the weightroom.

a couple of you were dogging Schnittker...

FWIW, he averaged 5.8 YPC in the Spring Game...
and he CAN catch, as evidenced by his INT of the pass intended for Mike Jenkins in the '02 scUM game... and his blocking was pretty damn good last year; you can't blame him for Ross' shortcomings...

i, for one, think that Schnitt is gonna have a big season...

:( Is Schnittker's blocking really that poor?
Maybe someone here can produce a clip, but the play that I will always associate with Schnittker occured in the NC State game this past year when the Bucks had their backs to the end zone. Schnittker was leading Ross through the hole, and some little 185 lb safety for NC State met Schnittker at the line of scrimmage and absolutely blew him out of the play.

The play was over before Ross even got the handoff, and at least two Wolfpack linebackers were using Schnittker's jersey for a welcome mat to our backfield.

I love the Bucks and will cheer these guys on no matter how good or bad it gets, so I really hope Schnittker has made the commitment to the himself and the team this offseason. The difference between Schnittker and Joe was Day and Night, and it's not a coincidence that the team dramatically improved in pass blocking and ypg/running once Joe got healthy -- even with Ross still at tailback.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw from Schnittker in the Spring Game. But most of that occurred late in the game against a lot of 3rd teamers. I don't expect him to be on the field for more than a few plays per game.

We'll be mixing up formations again, a lot of 3-wide with a TE, some 4 wide. And when we're in the good old I-formation, I expect Dionte Johnson to get most of the reps at fullback. He was a more reliable lead blocker last year, and will probably show noticeable improvement after his freshman year.

I think Schnittker can be effective as a receiver out of the backfield, though.

WOW Mo Wells over 3k as a junior...YIKES, and in Florida thats no joke but hey others have had hype and failed ex: Lydell, but....you know Pittman so far is proven but i mean hopefully we could develop something what like the gophers had the last couple of yrs in a nice duo in pittman/haw or pittman/wells or ne other combo like how minnesota had barber/maroney
we'l see how it plays out but i do know one thing, our running game will def. be a lot better than it was previously, i can feel that much for sure

He found the key eight times in the post - just never at the end of a sentence. :tongue2:

Pittman is option #1. Before it's all said and done, the season, we'll need at least 3 viable options! That looks like Pittman and a combo of Haw, Schnitt, Wells, and Russel. Pittman doesn't look like he can take the pounding.

He won't have to. He might have established himself as the go to guy, but Haw will get carries and they will find ways to use Wells' speed and shake ability. I don't see Russel getting any carries as of right now.

This being said, Pittman does look a LOT more physically mature than he did last year. I would look at his legs alone last season and just worry. He has put on some significant weight and I think we'll see the difference immediately once he starts running against some opposing defenses. He is ready.
