Buckeye Tailbacks - 2005 (official thread)

I don't see Russel getting any carries as of right now.

All it takes an injury or two.

Pittman does look a LOT more physically mature than he did last year.

Physically mature, I'll give you. The million dollar question is whether he is more mentally mature. If he can't make it to class and/or practice on time, he'll be in Tress' doghouse in a hurry.

I was implying without injury. I know that he's the next man in line if one of our 3 goes down. After him, who knows....maybe Lenix.

Another interesting question to ask is now that Pittman has the physique to take a bit more of a beating, will they use him more between or outside the tackles? Will they use Haw for one more than the other? Undoubtedly they'll both be getting a fair share of carries. A lot too will depend on how much we air it out (regardless of wanting to or having to).

All of a sudden, the situation changes! Read, Haws mistake. So we need to examine the possibilities at running back, again! And my guy, Anderson Russell looks to have an even better shot at running back and some playing time!

As well as Mo Wells! Of course!

Nonsense. Haw will (and should) be back for SDSU at the latest.

We can beat Miami with me at RB. Neither a true Frosh like Russel nor any of the other candidates - other than possibly Welch - are going to make a difference in the Texas game. It could force up to use the spread even more than originally planned, but that is about it.

This could also force an early decision on a RS for Welch, but I didn't see that happening in any case.

From a depth point of view, Haw's mistake hurts the team, but doesn't exactly knock us out of the top 10. Pittman is now in the spotlight (atleast for the beginning of the season) and I think the pressure to keep the spot will make him work harder to keep it. I would very much like to see Wells and Russell get reps during the Miami game (assuming we're doing well), but I doubt they will be the difference makers for the season. I say this with the hopes that we will all be pleasantly surprised with their performances.

I'm not concerned about difference makers, we need able bodies. What does Tressel do with Pittman for the four weeks before the season starts? An ankle tweak or thigh bruise becomes very serious. Who totes the rock then? Schnitker can go maybe five carries a game. Any more than that and he's not going to be effective. Wells and possibly Russell will have to play.

Good point about Pittman and Wells, when he gets here, staying healthy thru fall practices.
About Schnittker, though, why do you think he won't be effective for more than 5 carries? Because he's just not that effective of a runner or because the defense will easily be able to adjust?

I personally think that we will now see more of the spread formations with a single back, and Schnittker will be the single back most of the time in that case.

Schnittker can handle pass blocking and can catch very well out of the backfield...I wouldn't be opposed to spread formations with him as the lone back. I still think we run a lot of Shot-Ginn with Troy(after Miami), Teddy, and Pittman with Wells able to step in for Pittman.

You're right - spread 'em out and make the other team try and match up w/ our speed. We are going to create mis-matches for sure this year and I hope we can take advantage of them.

Both. He's not near the runner a healthy Joe was. Not as fast, not as strong, and if he carries any more than that the element of surprise will be absent. He's also not going to be running against redshirt freshman and scout team players like he did in the fourth quarter of the spring game.

I'm not saying Schnittker is a great running back, but he has the necessities to power thru a hole & find a gap to gain the yardage. The halfback position isn't just about speed or natural ability, its about understanding what needs to happen - which he showed he has a decent understanding of in the spring game even though he was running the ball against stringers...... He will surprise everyone with the opprotunity to carry the rock!

He will get carries at HB this season regardless of who is or isn't injured or suspended. I can't wait to tOSU take the field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IS IT SEPTEMBER YET????!!!!! :osu:
