Buckeye Offensive Coordinator Discussion (merged)

Development of the linemen has been another issue that I just don't see getting any better.

I watched Datish playing left tackle and he's horrible. If he is the best we have at LT then this team is in DEEP trouble offensively. No other way to put it. I see that Boone is gaining on him as far as PT, but the fact of the matter is that one of two things is going wrong:
1. Evaluating the talent coming out of high school.
2. Developing the talent when it gets here.

The fact that Stepanovich, Olivea, and...(who's the other one? I know Bentley is starting for the Saints) are on NFL rosters does speak to the fact that something was wrong while they were here. Was it the running backs? Could be. Lydell Ross is the worst RB to ever play at Ohio State. Just a very frustrating last couple of years on the offensive side of the ball.

Just as a referee, Buckeyeboy wrote (added emphasis):
If there are three NFL starters on a college team's offensive line

As no NFL running back is on a college team, the question of why NFL backs don't all get 100 yards is moot.

:)

At the same time, if there are three NFL starters on a college team then there are some big issues there that the NCAA will have problems with. . .

As to whether or not a college team with 3 lineman who will eventually play in the NFL should always have a 100 yd/game back. . .

Step and Bentley were monsters while at tOSU...Olivea played in spurts. Adrien Clarke is with the Eagles...

I agree that OL development is not happening the way it should, but just to play Devil's Advocate, those same OL looked pretty darn good with MoC back there...

but then he also goes on to say..."tOSU could put me in the backfield for 100 yds."

Therefore, assuming that Buckeyeboy is not an NFL quality back yet could still gain 100 yards behind an NFL line against top-flight D1 talent, I would say my question of why an NFL quality RB with 5 NFL-caliber OL in front of him not gaining 100 yards per week is a valid question.

That they did.

That's the frustrating part to me. Was it Clarett or was it the line? The games that Clarett didn't play in the line looked awful.

It's probably way to early to be having this discussion, but if the O goes out and lays another egg this weekend then something needs to happen. What that is I don't know, but not being able to run the football against SDSU does not bode well for the upcoming Big Ten season. Those games (SDSU) are scheduled (IMO) as warm ups. What this past weekend did for me was just create more questions about the offense.

If I'm recruiting a WR and Ohio State is after the same kid I'm saying "They won't even TRY and throw downfield." "They have the fastest kid in college football and they won't give him a chance!" If I'm recruiting a stud RB and Ohio State is after the same kid I'm saying "They can't get a back to 100 yards against anyone. You're just going to get beat up going there."

ps Clarke is still with the Eagles????? Good Lord. He was awful while he was at Ohio State.

NFL caliber lineman playing in college are, theoretically, of a higher caliber than the average college caliber lineman. To extend the argument to the NFL, you must choose a term besides simply NFL linemen. Perhaps you would say Pro Bowl linemen. Then I would say that a team with three Pro Bowl caliber linemen should be able to produce a consistent 100 yard rusher.

So you're telling me that Lydell Ross could gain 100 yards/game behind an NFL line?

Disclaimer: No Lydell's were hurt during the typing of this post. It is meant for explanation purposes only.

I guess anything's possible...

To steal from Peter King, what I think I think about this team is that I love Jim Tressel. Great man, great representative of the university. Also, the man has proven that he can win championships. Still the offense has not performed well, consistently, over the last few years. The players have changed, the schedules have changed, but it just doesn't seem to be getting any better. I am not saying that Tressel is a bad coach. The defense, special teams, and win-loss record show that. I'm just saying that there is very little to suggest that what he is doing will lead to a productive offense.
