You're spot on with this. Good find on this article! I hadn't seen this on any of the ND webs I visit yet.

I think working out a deal with NBC on commercials is Kelly's way of minimizing TV interruption. I've heard players in the past complain that they're working on a drive, momentum is going in their favor and the defense may be sucking air, and a TV timeout is called.

To be honest, I don't see this much myself. If I think back, most TV timeouts occur after a score, change in possesion, or a review. Maybe the gripe is that the defense ACTUALLY made a stop, momentum is in their favor, and everyone takes a TV break? I dunno. I'm glad they're at least looking at it because some of the commercial breaks are excessively long, and I'd rather have a couple more breaks at much shorter intervals than the 4-5 long breaks per quarter that they say they've been doing in the past. As it is now you can hit the bathroom, grab a drink and snack, and still be back before the action is starting.

I think this is all a stunt for NBC to sell Notre Dame football as being exciting to watch again. TV stations have been dealing with this hurry up shit for a few seasons now. NBC has had the Indianapolis Colts on for more than one Sunday night game, and ND has likely played a couple teams that have run fast paced offenses. It's not like this one talk with Kelly is going to open NBCs eyes to how the broadcast should be handled. This is just something that they're going to plug into some story down the line about NBC having to consult with Kelly about the best way to show this "new and exciting" offense that Notre Dame is now running.

Pretty transparent stunt, IMO.

NBC to use five shorter breaks to accommodate Notre Dame's plans for offense - ESPN

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly doesn't want anybody or anything slowing down the Fighting Irish or his spread formation -- one that worked so well in his previous stop at Cincinnati -- and that includes NBC, the network that's had a contract with Notre Dame since 1991.


Kelly said he and athletic director Jack Swarbrick have had conversations with NBC officials about how coverage plans will work with the Irish's up-tempo style, which is basically hurry-up, no-huddle.

In response, NBC plans to have five shorter breaks per quarter this season, rather than four longer ones, during Notre Dame games, a format that is used for NFL games.

BK does not want nbc to interupt his no huddle offense and has been meeting with network producers about not having commercials interupt the nd no huddle offense.


I have a problem with part of this and the michigan staff and ad need to get involved as well. Michigan also runs a no huddle offense at times to speed up it's game. What I can see happening is nd getting an advantage by having michigan's offensive rythem being interupted with tv time outs while the broad cast does not interupt nd's offense. Basically if they do not take any breaks during nd's offensive possessions they would all be called during michigan's offensive possessions making it hard to either get in rythem or taking them out of rythem when they get moving and using the first oppertunity of a clock stopage to take the tv time outs on michigan's possessions. It would also give nd an indirect advantage to keep their defense fresh and the coordinators extra time to get a handle on what the michigan offense is doing during it's possessions.

Michigan's AD Dave Brandon and coach Rich Rodriguez need to ensure the tv time outs are done in a fair manner for both teams.

The guy has spelling errors all over the place, and then he properly uses 'ensure'? That must be his beverage of choice.

Maybe I'm missing something here...

refs don't just randomly stop play for tv timeouts. They go to commercials during natural stoppages such as injuries, turnovers, touchdowns, field goals, punts, etc.


So if NBC goes to commercial 5 times instead of 4 times (even if it is for shorter duration)...isn't it more likely to interrupt the flow of notre dames up tempo offense.

I would rather have fewer stoppages than a bunch of shorter ones. They should be lobbying for 3 long stoppages instead of 5 shorter ones.

You would think they could just play better ball instead of trying to fix the game to their advantage. The whole long grass thing was disgusting when USC came to play at Notre Dame. It was obvious and embarrassing. If you need longer grass to cut down another teams strengths, that says volumes about Notre Dame's weaknesses.

Jeez, methomps, if we're not allowed to talk about the Bush Push anymore, I think the long grass debate can also be dropped. Both happened 5 years ago, and our grass certainly didn't slow Reggie down any :wink2:
