Brian "Body Kount" Kelly (HC Louisiana State)

I really don't care about UC or Notre Dame being successful (I root for the meteor when ND plays tsun) but if I were UC, once Kelly was announced was the ND coach I would want him gone. I would not want him sticking around.
You misunderstand. The Bearcat "faithful" didn't want him to stick around. But they wanted him to not stick around at their behest, rather than his. They just hate that he treated them like second-class citizens. Though why they think they qualify as anything else is a mystery.

The behavior of UC "fans" toward tOSU has them ranking up with Michigan and Da U as teams I most hate. They can pound sand.

Actually I was responding to a couple of posts on here that said he should stick around for the bowl. Personally I think it would have been a good thing. It could have continued to be a distraction for UC for the next month.

UC fans wanted him to stick around for the bowl game on Friday, only so they could send his out out of town Saturday morning.

Your point? I believe that Kelly has said that the head coaching position at Notre Dame is his dream job. Why shouldn't he go after it? Because he's afraid of upsetting the fragile egos of UC fans?

Furthermore, he led UC to a 12-0 regular season record, so I don't think UC suffered at all from Kelly's mid-season efforts (if there were any) to get the ND job. I'm just not sure what you have to complain about here.

my point was to post it and question the loyalties of a coach who should have been more concerned with finishing the regular season...Are you really this daft?

And a good point it was. Nonetheless, when you are the fan of a second-tier program, you better get used to being treated like this. And like it or not, UC is a second-tier program (who is having one whale of a fine season, let's not forget that for a moment).

He must have been concerned enough with finishing the regular season--he took your team to an undefeated season. No harm, no foul. Like I said before, he left for greener pastures. Get over it.

Second tier, third tier, turd tier, greener pastures -- So what? They don't play any less harder or care any less than athletes in First Tier schools.

Those players committed to the school and to the coach and they had their future choices limited once they made that commitment. Coaches are teachers first and foremost -- I know, I had one of the best at OSU; Woody -- it doesn't matter what tier they committed to, they can't take off in mid-season to try and connect to a better situation -- they can't write off a post season game because some gang-banging homey got zapped -- just to remind you of a recent NC situation.

I don't blame Kelly for wanting to leave a 35K stadium, no TV, no History, small fan base, to go to 90K, own TV network, million folks fan base, any more than I blame Rich Rod for leaving the big Trailer Park in the sky. But those kids deserve to be coached in their bowl game by the coach they had to commit to at the beginning of the season.

You tell me that if the Browns came calling and Tress was offered more than he's making now to take over and leave the Bucks in the hands of his assistants that you wouldn't be flaming lava bed hot under the collar. It's a matter of personal integrity, a fact I'm sure you're not surprised was missing in Rich Rod, Nick Sabin or Brian Kelly.

Question one: Do you pass on your dream job while still at an old job?

Question two: Doesn't this scenario reflect more on Ntre Ame than Kelly himself?

Question three: Usually when I coach leaves and takes a new job, the university doesn't want him to coach. That's entirely proper, don't you think?

Strawman.

It doesn't matter how the fans feel, it is just how the system works. One school needs the coach to get recruiting going as well as getting settled in before starting on next season's workouts and such. The other school wants to keep their coach to handle their bowl game. One has to lose, and it will 99% of the time be the school that wants the coach to stay until after the bowl game. This is especially true at stepping-stone places like CMU and UC.

You can be mad, but don't try and make Kelly sound like the most horrible person in the world and that no other coach has ever or will ever do that. It is the nature of the system. You want to change the system? You're welcome to try, but good luck.

I wonder if the same UC fans who are whining about this now felt the same way when Kelly left CMU in its bowl game to coach UC in its bowl game. Can't have it both ways.

Cincy fans are understandably disappointed. Kelly's leaving clearly says that they are not his dream job. They don't appear to be the Houston coach's dream job either. Maybe Cincy is someone's dream job but it will probably not be the type of destination job that Ohio State, USC, Notre Dame, TSUN, Texas and other major teams present when jobs open in our lifetimes.

University of Cincinnati administrators and fans can change this by building more attractive facilities and giving the coach and team more support. Putting a chip on your shoulder about Ohio State and resenting coaches that leave is counterproductive.

I'm not so sure about this given UC's resources and fiscal situation for the foreseeable future. Rumor is that Cincy offered Kelly 3MM to stay. I know that they committed to borrowing 10.5MM to build him his practice facility. This is at a university with critical budget issues. They've actually been borrowing money from their endowment's principal to meet annual operating costs! On top of this, their football program lost 2MM last year, and the athletic department lost 4MM.

UC's been more than irresponsible in trying to keep Kelly. How much more irresponsible can they be in trying to make the job more attractive in the wake of his departure? They start talking stadium expansion, and it might be time for the Governor, Legislature and Fingerhut to step in and take control.

Oh, I understood that from earlier posts on BP.

I'm sure that the government would have no problem with their fans donating to improve the facilities and pay the coaching staff. That's how Ohio Stadium was built. I mean they do have hundreds of thousands of fans, right? Their fans do want them to be a winning program and would donate from deep pockets to make that work, right? After all, Cincy's stadium is SRO for every home game, so just raise the ticket prices. Wait...

Eh, just get Oscar Rpbertson and Kenyon Martin to pay for it.
