Brian "Body Kount" Kelly (HC Louisiana State)

Which is a win/win; because any failures that Kelly has early at ND will still be Willingham's fault.

I'm waiting for other ND fans to start saying "hiring Charlie Weis was Willingham's fault"

I was watching the news a bit ago in Penn Station, they were talking about the Kelly hire, if it was fair to the Cinci kids, and if it could be handled differently. The coaches/analysts they were speaking to came to a concensus that Cincinnati players probably weren't sympathetic towards Central Michigan when he left for Cinci, so it's a two way street here. They also said that this is the way college football is, any way you cut it someone is gonna be unhappy with the way he left. I don't necessarily agree with all this, I feel for those players that bought into him as a coach, and I hope they win their bowl game.

I understand that Kelly would want to tell his players in person. I understand their disappointment and the disappointment of the fans.

If it were me, I would have held a "thank you for my time here" press conference.

One really wonders why he came to the senior player function with police protection. Maybe there is something a bit more to his not having a press conference.

As for the nonsense about his not coaching UC's bowl, they didn't mind him picking up the reins from Dantonio and leaving Central Michigan in the lurch. It is how the business is conducted.

On the other criticism, anybody else know anyone who gets a job with that kind of paycheck and then discusses it privately with his customers or staff prior to a leak? Had he twittered or something else, he would have been accused of being inconsiderate for not telling the players face-to-face.

I am not an apologist for him but I think his critics about the way he moved should reserve judgment because we don't have all the facts. Wait, he's coaching at Notre Dame? Nevermind.

Kelly didn't leave Central Michigan the way he left UC. I believe he actually coached both teams' bowl game that year. There was more than enough time yesterday for Kelly to have a quick meeting before the players left for the banquet to tell them he was leaving. I can't imagine he thought they did not hear what everyone else had already heard about him getting the Notre Dame job.

He didn't coach CMU in their Bowl Game.

I feel bad for the players, but seriously, should the fans or university be suprised? Cinci did pull him away before the previously named Motor City Bowl. The Athletic Dept. at the 'Nati has now reaped what they sowed.

There were reports even Wednesday that Kelly to ND was already a done deal. He was up front with his players and the university for awhile now that he was talking to ND. The media has basically been all over this since day 1, people were expecting the announcement Friday after Kelly talked to the players at the banquet, however the news was leaked even before the dinner Thursday.

Anyway you look at it, he was damned if he did, damned if he didn't. If he told the players before the banquet people would run him into the ground for ruining the Bearcat's celebration and it would steal the spotlight on a perfect season thusfar. Were there questions going into the banquet last night anyway? Of course, but he took the right approach and wouldn't answer anything till he talked to the players. In the ESPN interview last night he was very adamant not to give anything away at that time.

As I said, I'm sympathetic toward Cincinnati in this position. Whether the Notre Dame players are is another story, I'm sure Cinci was happy when Brian Kelly left Central Michigan to join them. Thats the business as they say, some people will be unhappy regardless of how it's handled. So far I think he's handled this transition as best possible given the circumstances.
