Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul

Just finished season 1, and...holy shit I am hooked like a meth head! I have stuff to do and places to be, otherwise I'd be starting season 2 right now. The character building is just great, and Walt is definitely great at balancing the line between evil and good, at least for now. Can't wait to see how he takes this into the big operation I know it turns into.

Warning - spoilers may follow....

Here is how I see the show going from here......

I think Hank & Gomez are dead. Walt and Jesse are still alive, and Walt will attempt to smooth things over with Jesse. Todd"s crew will try to strongarm Walt into going back to cooking full-time.

Marie will flip out when Hank doesn't come home. She confronts Skyler, and in turn opens her eyes as to just how dangerous Walt is....

I don't want to jump to the conclusion that Hank, Jesse, and Gomez are going to die, but it sure doesn't look good for them. We know from the flash forwards that Walt isn't in jail so he definitely survives the shootout and gets out of custody. Hank has survived getting shot before so even if Walt is freed, he could still realistically live after this. I sure hope so.

Here's where Gilligan has taken us now though: Walt needed to be saved by an uber-violent white supremacist group. And viewers are lying to themselves if they didn't secretly hope they'd show up to save Walt from his arrest. I know I did and it makes me sick to think about it. Have I grown so attached to Walt's character? Are the writers testing us?

The fact that Walt called to try to cancel the hit on Jesse, as well as him screaming to try to warn Hank about Todd's crew shows that there is still a small bit of humanity left inside Walt - he isn't a complete monster.....

I wasn't rooting for anyone, per se..... I just did not (and still do not) want the end of Walt to be being driven away in the back seat of a cop car. There needs to be an end bigger than just being arrested and taken to jail......I am still thinking that in the end, Jesse is going to save Walt and probably hate himself for it.

last night was the first time I found myself rooting against Walt....but I was more rooting for Jesse than anything.

I can't root for Jesse. As diabolical as Walt has been, he has always demonstrated a certain amount of fatherly love for Jesse. He did save Jesse from the gangbangers by running them over - to Walt's detriment because it was he, not Jesse, who received Gus' wrath for it. If Walt hadn't saved Jesse there, he probably continues to work with Gus in peace and make his millions. By running over the gangbangers, Walt set in motion all of the events that led to Jesse killing Gale, Walt poisoning Brock, Walt killing Gus, etc. All of those things needed to be done to prevent Gus from killing Walt for saving Jesse's life.

He also did, I might add, earn Jesse a ridiculous amount of wealth.

Any other sociopathic drug dealer would have cut bait with a loose cannon like Jesse long before Walt called on Todd's uncle last week. And Walt continued to demonstrate some redeeming value when he attempted to call off the hit after he saw that his brother-in-law was going to get caught in the crossfire. There are still depths of evil to which he is not willing to go and other depths he may have been forced into by Jesse.

Jesse comes across to me as an ungrateful coward who was afraid to say no and who refuses to accept any responsibility for his own actions. The fact that Walt cared for Jesse ultimately hastened his descent into becoming the man that Jesse now loathes. I suppose that's the irony of their relationship.

This show has gotten better throughout it's run and is going to end on it's peak. One of the best shows ever, IMO.

[spoilers below]

It's a strange situation to find yourself rooting for any of the characters, since they are all pretty much "breaking bad" in one way or another. That being said, I was hoping like hell Walt escaped his arrest and that his money was not found.

Also, the scene with Walt and Andrea/Brock was pretty damn dark, considering the "little argument" Walt said he and Jesse were having was about Walt poisoning Brock.
