Brady "XLLL" Hoke (Head Coach San Diego State)

Oh come let's sing Ohio's praise
And songs to Alma Mater raise...

Is singing a traditional Ohio State song the only time you ever talk about OSU? No. It's just a dumb argument to make. Even Max really knows Hoke does it to be disrespectful; it's not so different from what Woody/Urban do with the "that state up north" stuff, but in a much less clever way.

Actually, I don't. No disrespect is shown by this at all. Though I admit one of his goals is to infuriate hypersensitive Buckeye fans.

Clearly, he is succeeding with many of us; just not with me, since I don't understand why other people's shorts get so bunched up over this.

I know everyone here hates Brady Hoke. But I don't.

1. People whine about his referring to the Buckeye team as "Ohio." You all seem to forget that this is how we have referred to ourselves through much of our history. "We'll drink to old Ohio till we wobble in our shoes." He can call us whatever the [censored] he wants, but this is not disrespectful in the least, regardless of what Hoke himself may say. Our complaining about this term makes Buckeye fans look silly IMO.

2. He is a very, very good coach. But not a great one. And that's how we want it. He might beat us once out of every 4-5 games, just enough to keep some flavah in the rivalry. Fine by me.

3. He is a Michigan Man. And that also is what we want IMO. Hatred leavened by respect is the hallmark of this, the greatest of all sports rivalries. Hoke will engineer a team with grit, talent and arrogance, the archetype for Michigan football. Those qualities will ensure that Michigan will be successful enough to impress the nation, yet sufficiently flawed through self-importance that we will cause them massive heartache.

Yep, Hoke is fine by me. He'll be good enough to raise the hopes of Michigan fans, but not good enough to prevent those hopes from being dashed by all-too-frequent losses to the Buckeyes. Man, I'm looking forward to the coming years.

I will say this, I agree with the bolded above.

(actually, all Max is Saying is, we've got our Lloyd Carr back plus a beer gut, and we all know more is better. Kick the shit out of him, Let Michigan be all cocky, whatever.)

And how does he attempt to infuriate us so? By disrespecting us, of course.

I actually find your contrarian trolling on this to be much more infuriating, as not only do you as a supposed Buckeye fan twist yourself in knots to defend a turncoat scUM coach, but you do so with the assumption that any Buckeyes who think he's an idiot are actually falling victim to his machinations.

You give him far too much credit, and us too little. For shame, "M" Buck.

I'm pretty sure there's a difference between getting infuriated and noting that Hoke is kind of a clown and engaging in amateurish behavior for doing this, no?

Your contrarian act is getting quite old. Purposely calling your rival by a name other than its actual name is indeed disrespectful.

While we can debate all day long if calling us "Ohio" is disrespectful, which I don't think it is, I'm sure that we can all agree that the intent is to be something short of flattery. Heck, he's the tsun coach... I'd expect no less.

So, if that's the case, often times when words are used in an attempt to be disrespectful, those who are the targets of said disrespect adopt the word as a way of disarming the offending party. Plenty of examples here, no?

That said, I find the irony that my second alma mater in the SE corner of the state took what was what I think an attempt to be disrespectful to tOSU (a) harder than we did, and (b) kind of spoiled it for the dough-ball up north.

There's no way anyone at tsun can separate their laughable attempt at a dig on us and the fact that they had it handed to them last march by the Bobcats. To continue to refer to us as Ohio is a constant reminder of their feeble dig as well as remind them that they lost to a MAC school in March. To that end, I'm always happy to introduce myself to a tsun grad as their nightmare... an alumni of both "Ohios."

In that light I just laugh to myself every time I hear someone from tsun refer to us at Ohio.

If it's not meant to be disrespectful, then why the fuck say it at all?

We're so unimportant that he can't be bothered to say the whole name.

I don't give a fuck that he does it. I expect it. We call them TSUN.

We refer to ourselves as "Ohio", in songs, because adding "State" adds another syllable and doesn't fit in most of the songs. I've never once referred to The Ohio State University as "Ohio". If you have, you're an idiot. Also, in some of the songs, I believe the lyrics refer to the State of Ohio, not just tOSU.
