Brady "XLLL" Hoke (Head Coach San Diego State)

Well, the name of that song (and the opening line) is "I Wanna Go Back to Ohio State", so... no. C'mon man, no Buckeye has ever referred to OSU solely as "Ohio".

If you look back at the old newspaper articles and even promotional material from the university itself, 'Ohio' alone was often used to describe the school and/or it's team.

It's just that BB73 was the only one still around from that era.

Are you suggesting that Hoke refers to OSU as "Ohio" as a nod to those bygone eras (no offense, BB73)? Because if not, I'm not sure how your fact has any relevance to the conversation at hand.

Regardless of how "Ohio" alone was occasionally used ephemerally, "Ohio State" has always been the standard designation since we upgraded from A&M status.

As Buckyle noted, sometimes it has made sense to drop the "State" for pragmatic reasons, and often that actually refers to the entire state, but I still would say it's rare that a local would refer to OSU simply as "Ohio".

And Brady Hoke is no historian.

I'm a bit of a testy mood today so I'll be direct...

Read the actual post I was responding to and the post it was responding to in turn. If you can't find the answer to your own question then there's little anyone can do to help you.

Disseminating aside 'Ohio' was often used in reference to The Ohio State University or it's athletic teams, and it's use was common enough that it resulted in Ohio University filing a lawsuit concerning the matter (which is arguably where the real focus on 'use The Ohio State only' began).

...examples from The Ohio State Football scrapbook...
-The program from the 1903 home game against Indiana (in other words, something printed by the university or its athletic apparatus) says “Ohio vs. Indiana” on the cover (pg 21)

-A November 25, 1904 Plain Dealer article on the Carlisle game is subheadlined “Ohio State Could Not Win From Even the Carlisle Second Team”. Within the article, “Ohio braced up considerably…The Ohio backs and ends played a good defensive game at times…made by Ohio in the first half…Ohio worked the ball up…” (pg 22). As in most of the cases I will cite, “Ohio” and “Ohio State” are used interchangeably throughout the article, just as today a writer might use “OSU”, “Ohio St.”, and “the Buckeyes” in order to mix things up. I am in no way claiming that “Ohio” was used to the exclusively.

-An article on the 1916 football season in the OSU yearbook, the Makio (again, either an official university publication or one produced by those very close to the university (students)): “splendid defensive stand by Ohio…it was Ohio’s ball…not a single end run was attempted by Ohio.” (pgs. 40-41, with similar useage in the 1917 article on pgs 43-44)

-A 1928 AP article on the UM game: “It was all Ohio…heading the Ohio outfit” (pg 73)

-the 1935 OSU roster (presumably as part of a university-backed program or yearbook) is entitled “1935 Ohio State Football Roster”, but the coaches are listed under the heading “Ohio Coaching Staff”; the accompanying team photo is entitled “Ohio Squad” (pgs 90-91)

-a 1948 AP article on the UM game: “saw the Ohioans…Ohio ripped the Michigan line apart…Ohio rolled up 130 yards.” (pg 129)

-a 1957 AP story on the UM game: “Twice the Ohio team…Ohio’s Don Clark…Ohio never lost its poise.” (pg 165)

-a 1968 AP story on the UM game: “A potent Ohio defense…It was the worst beating Ohio ever handed Michigan.” (pg 200)

More examples:

Check the scoreboard pictures from the 1970s and earlier. The scoreboard didn't say "Home" and "Visitors"; it said "Ohio" and "Visitors".

The radio play-by-play guy (pre-Paul-Keels) referred to Ohio State as "Ohio" almost exclusively. Check out any YouTube video of games from the 1970s.

We chant "O-H-I-O" and "O-H" : "I-O". Nowhere in there do we spell out "State" (like Florida State does).

Long story short:

This is all a great big bag of who gives a shit. Is Hoke trying to be disrespectful when he says it? Yes.

So.
What.

Since when does his worthless opinion count for squat?

Allow me to be equally direct. It was a rhetorical question. Your post, I'll remind you, countered a post made by BayBuck that Max's argument was ridiculous. You chose to counter Bay's post. The rest follows. If you want your post read in a vaccuum, go start a "Historical Use of 'Ohio' When Referring to Ohio State" thread. Otherwise, your "Who, me?" argument when someone calls out your support for your fellow board contrarian will be unavailing.

I think you owe Muck an apology. Otherwise, expect him to kick your ass.

Just a warning. Muck will never support me, on this board or anywhere else. Govern yourself accordingly.
