Disseminating aside 'Ohio' was often used in reference to The Ohio State University or it's athletic teams, and it's use was common enough that it resulted in Ohio University filing a lawsuit concerning the matter (which is arguably where the real focus on 'use The Ohio State only' began).

That's an interesting read, but the occasional AP article or TV broadcast aside, in almost no case is there a substantive use of the word "Ohio" that references tOSU as distinct from the state as a whole. Ohio State obviously is an important representative of the State of Ohio, and that's reflected in the many references to the state in our stadium, songs and merchandise. Even the OU-OSU lawsuit was more about symbolic or pictorial representation of the word for merchandising purposes, and it was settled since OU had been called "Ohio" since before were the "The" OSU.
