The other day at Browns camp in Berea, Ohio, I kept hearing over and over from fans and people in the organization: Where is Brady Quinn?
It's a good question. Every year, holdouts are a way of life in the NFL, particularly with the rookies in the first round. My theory is we spend far too much time on a story that never goes away and never interests anyone. But the Quinn story is a little bit different because, after he was drafted 22nd overall by Cleveland, it was widely assumed his experienced agent, Tom Condon, would want the Notre Dame quarterback to get paid far better than the slot for the No. 22 pick. There's some logic there because Quinn performed better his last two years at Notre Dame than a guy who you'd normally see get taken in the 20s. But the slot is the slot. And the Browns are not paying him like the No. 11 pick just because they had him graded far better than No. 22.
Huh? What logic is that? Quinn didn't win any big games, he didn't win any bowl games. Every player drafted in teh first 3 rounds, particularly RB and QBs, have had great careers. Quinn doesn't deserve anything extra just because media idiots thought he was going to go in the top 3.

You don't draft a QB that high and sit him for more than a year. Therefore, teh Browns should write the contract assuming Quinn will be teh full time starter in year 2 onwards. Give escalators in the case of pro bowls, top 5 passer rating, etc. etc. The only way Quinn doesn't start in 2008 is if he's injured or Derek Anderson or somebody else is a pro bowler. That's not likely.

The problem is that Quinn probably wants them to be much easier to reach than that (i.e. if he starts 10 games in the season). If I were going to make his contract work to 10 pick money he better be playing like Peyton Manning.

OMG! Hold your ground Cleveland!!!!! Do not fold your hand with Quinn. He is not the starter, did not earn the starter position, hasn't shown us anything. Remember history. As soon as you fold and give in to a contract that is more than his 20 something pick warrants, he will get into a motorcycle crash or something and we will end up hating him. It is best for you(The Browns) and Quinn that he gets what the 20 something pick got last year plus 15%. Nuff said.

Tibor, I completely agree. Quinn is an interesting case because the Browns made it public that they had him slotted higher and tried to make deals to draft him higher. No secret that the saw him as greater than pick 22 value. Also, only one other offensive player was taken between pick #9 and him (Marshwan Lynch), plus he is a QB. The Raiders managed to sign Culpepper before Russell. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out. Probably better for Brady that he doesn't start right out of the gate anyways until the new line gets settled.
