It all comes down to the NFL not having guaranteed contracts. It is the most violent of team sports, except maybe rugby but still very close, and it has no provision for an athletes future earnings.

Look I'm all for helping out the little guys but I just don't like the scheduling of this one especially if it is happening more than twice in the next 5 years. Nobody is saying they are not good in their own league but they shouldn't be on the same field as the Buckeyes and I fail to see how it will help us going through the season.
just my opinion but i think its more than football here, JT had a chance to give back and is doing so.

Q&A | Brady Quinn
QB says contract demands reasonable
Rookie uncertain when he will join Browns
Friday, August 3, 2007 6:34 AM
By James Walker

The Columbus Dispatch

BEREA, Ohio -- Quarterback Brady Quinn knows that much is being said about his holdout from Cleveland Browns training camp, now in its eighth day.

Quinn, a Dublin native who played at Notre Dame, was given a big jolt at the NFL draft when he slid down the board before the Browns traded to take him at No. 22. The Browns' other draft picks have signed, including offensive tackle Joe Thomas, who was taken third.
During his holdout, Quinn has been working out at the Athletes' Performance Institute in Tempe, Ariz., trying to stay ready for when he eventually joins the team.
In an interview yesterday, Quinn discussed the details of his holdout and what has been the toughest part of missing training camp.

quinn just hopes green bay doesn't show up on the browns schedule because AJ will be all over him like his sister on the wedding night (or the fiesta bowl or whatever). :oh:

Nobody else wants to see that either. One sight of that dingbat wearing halves of 2 jerseys having no clue what's going on the field is enough...

Not even close... there are violent individual collisions... but... not on every single play... How many Hockey players play into their late 30's and early 40's? (I don't know either... but... got to be way more than football.)

Brady Quinn, it's time to sign deal
Joe Thomas sets positive example
Published on Friday, Aug 03, 2007

Dear Brady Quinn:
As you work out in Arizona or wherever, have you dared to ask yourself, ''Just what am I doing?''
Do you realize that your holdout makes it seem like you have an overblown sense of entitlement? That you not only are hurting yourself by holding out, but also not helping the team that saved you from even a bigger free-fall in the NFL Draft?
Brady, the Browns picked you at No. 22.
It doesn't matter that they once said you were among the top five players on their draft board. Or that you thought you should, as a quarterback, go higher than 22nd. Or that your college coach Charlie Weis thinks you are the next Tom Brady. Or that you went to Notre Dame.
You still were picked 22nd.

Browns notebook
Running out of patience with Quinn
Savage talks on WTAM about first-round pick holding out on contract
By Patrick McManamonBeacon Journal sportswriter
Published on Friday, Aug 03, 2007
BEREA: It appears Phil Savage is running out of patience regarding Brady Quinn's holdout.
The Browns' general manager went on the radio Thursday morning and in blunt terms stated the team's case in its contract negotiations with the second of two first-round picks.
''We'll talk all day,'' Savage said on WTAM, the team's flagship. ''We'll talk all night. We'll hammer this thing out. But you have to have two sides that are willing to engage.''
Savage pointed out that the Browns have extended several contracts, guaranteed Joe Thomas more money than any other rookie offensive lineman in NFL history, paid heavily for free agents LeCharles Bentley and Eric Steinbach, and gave a little extra to sign cornerback Eric Wright.
''All of a sudden the Browns are going to shift gears and try to extract blood from the quarterback that we picked, that we say is going to be the face of this franchise, that we say is the future of this team?'' Savage asked. ''It makes no sense.

BROWNS INSIDER
Quinn's agent invites Cleveland Browns to end contract impasse

BROWNS INSIDER
Quinn's agent invites Browns to end talks

Brady Quinn's agent, Tom Condon, has invited the Browns to Kansas City to try to break the impasse and get Quinn into camp, a league source said.
Condon, who declined to comment Friday, has made three trips to Cleveland to try to get the deal done and the source said he thinks it can be hammered out quicker in person. However, Condon wants the Browns to come his way, both literally and figuratively.
Asked Friday if the Browns are willing to make the trip, General Manager Phil Savage was noncommittal. "We'll have to see," he said.
The Browns and Condon remain less than $1 million apart on the guaranteed money, but about $2.5 million apart on incentives, which can add $10 million to the total package, a second source close to the negotiations said.

Kansas City? I'd be willing to go there for BBQ, but not for BQ.

I guess symbolically it would be meeting halfway between Cleveland and BQ's workout place in Arizona.

It's not like the Browns honchos don't have things to do in Ohio during training camp. If I were them, I'd take a pass.

Again, in the long run Quinn is the one who ultimately calls the shots. If the Browns and his agent are within $1M in guaranteed money and $2.5M on incentives, Brady can just tell his agent to split the difference on both and let's sign the contract. That way he can save a lot of face with the Browns fans, his teammates, and the organization, and get to work at what he was drafted to do.

I've figured out what Brady is doing here.

He realizes that the Browns made an indefensible mistake by trading up to draft his sorry ass. So he's going through the motions of a hold out and he's planning on sitting the whole season. That way, the Browns can trade his rights for a third round pick and at least put a band-aid on this collosol error.

He is, after all, a Browns' fan. Obviously he wants what is in the franchise's best interest.

ok here is the solution I heard from spiels. Check this out....

Brady wants starter money. Give it to him but pad a year at the end. Make the contract incentive based. Give him the $9 Mil signing bonus. $2 mil yr 1,
3 mil yr 2, 4 mil yr 3, 5 yr 4, 6 yr 5, 7 yr 6. But the condition is that he is the starter to get anything over $2 mil. That would be a guarantee of 9(sign) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = $21 mil and potential of $36 mil. Then have incentive of $100 million if he starts begin to end and wins a super bowl for cleveland. That would be over a half billion potential. I am sure they wasted almost that much on all the scrubs before Quinn.

all of the smart and inventive ways to get Quinn his money based on performance aren't going to work I'm afraid.

The only thing that will get Brady into camp is for the Browns to pony up something big in guaranteed money AND something short enough so that when (this is his thinking) he is the starter, he can renegotiate and up his contract to Manning levels.

Now nevermind he's Brooks Bollinger with longer, greasier hair, but the Browns are both over a barrel in that the trade was stupid and the current FO and coaching staff are desperate, but kinda like getting smashed and having carnal relations with an ugly chick, those very same people are regretting it now.
