Brad Stevens? I love what he did at Butler but - like Mark Few at Gonzaga - I saw him as having the right job for him.

The NBA? That's a big leap. The fact that it's the Celtics only raises the stakes.

Not picking on you because I'm seeing it everywhere but what "rebuild" are we talking about here?

They were a .500 team this season. They have lost two former stars living off past glories in Garnett and Pierce. It's not like LeBron and Wade leaving the Heat in their primes.

The biggest loss in Boston was Rivers. The team was already in transition. They just didn't accept it until after the season, nor did the media.

Losing Garnett, Pierce, and Ray Allen a year before is a pretty significant loss for any team to make. Let alone losing Doc Rivers and potentially Rajon Rondo. So I'd say it's fair enough to say the Celtics are in a bit of a rebuilding effort.

I think they may make a move for someone like Josh Smith, but try to sign him for a shorter deal (3 years).

I posted this in the college basketball thread but I think it is a terrible move by Stevens to go from Butler to Boston. I know that Boston is in a rebuilding mode but I think he will be eaten alive by the professional athletes. I also think that his brand of coaching will not make it in the NBA. He was a very good college coach and I have no idea what he was thinking when he accepted the Celtics job.

Sorry man but to be fair, that couldn't be farther from the truth.

The Celtics had no one, and I repeat, no one. They tanked that year before he was hired and ended up with the worst record, #1 odds at Tim Duncan only to lose not only out on him but also the #2 pick, settling in at 3 when they took Chauncey Billups and then Ron Mercer at 6, so let's not pretend Pitino had a full deck over there.

That draft was so bad, only 3 All-Star's came out of it.

Also, they went from 15-67 to 36-46 the year he took over, not a bad jump based on the lack of talent they had.

I dislike Pitino as much as the next guy, and pretty much the whole state of Kentucky, but Pitino didn't flop by any stretch of the imagination when you look at the scrubs he had to work with. You can't win based around Antoine Walker, just won't happen. The person to blame was former GM Chris Wallace.

Like most NBA coaches, your success is based far more on the quality of talent around you and the quality of GM above you. The X's and O's only take you so far as it is the Jimmy's and Joe's as they say....or the Rajon's and Rasheed's I guess nowadays.

NBA legend Bill Russell is OK after collapsing during a speech

There was a scary scene in Lake Tahoe, Nevada on Thursday when NBA legend Bill Russell was giving a speech and collapsed on stage. The 80-year old Hall of Famer was taken away on a stretcher before being hospitalized as a precaution.

Witness Michael Rooney tells The Associated Press that Russell was telling a story about Wilt Chamberlain to a roomful of Konica Minolta employees when he started to sway at the podium and then fell backward.

Rooney says Russell seemed to be conscious as hotel personnel and first responders came to his aid. The meeting was cut short and attendees left.

Russell is doing OK and is expected to fly home to Seattle, possibly as early as Friday night.
