Bitching about the 2004 Season

Yeah I think we should make a reality show outta this and just get rid of the weakest player/Coach..... Bollman get your stuff packed cuz I have no doubt you'll be going first!!! yeah jus joke'n but I think Pass blocking we've done well. The Run block'n has been a JOKE.

when one of your "top linemen" has his best game of the year and still doesn't grade to a winning performance the issue of weakest link becomes rather blurred

I always questioned last year when week in and out Hartsock would be the lineman of the week...Probably because Bollman did not coach TE's...

I think OSU needs a new O-Line coach, first and foremost, then an O-Coordinator. Alvarez at Wisconsin always has a top-notch O-Line coach. I know he always has the horses to carry the pigskin in the backfield, but sometimes the backups, the third-stringers, and the fullbacks carry for 100-plus yards in a game. That is great coaching, something, IMO, OSU doesn't have on the offensive side of the ball right now. JT is a good coach, but he needs an effective OC to help him with the play-calling.

TE/FB and the running game

These last couple of weeks I've seen a lot of blame going around regarding the inadequacies of the offense, specifically the running game.

The blame almost always goes to the playcalling, Lydell or the O-line, and rightfully so. However, I think the TE's and the FB's need to be lumped in with them.

Anybody who follows, and has followed, Buckeye football in the past, knows how important these positions are to our run game.

We have a "pass catching" TE as a starter and a freshman as his backup. From what I've seen they have done NOTHING for the run game.
It's amazing, I haven't seen Hartsock mentioned this whole year and how he is missed.

The fullbacks are not much better. I know Joe has been hurt and still trying to get in the swing of things, but based on past history he is a decent but not great blocker. Schnittker might as well not even be in there. Besides catching the ball out of the backfield, which almost never happens, he is way below OSU's usual standards.

These guys are a huge part of the running game (or lack thereof) and they have gone completely without mention.

Just wondering what others opinions are of this.

P.S. I am on here almost nightly and I have not seen any other topics regarding this. If this has been covered, I apologize. I couldn't find nothing on the search.

Schnittker has got to work on his strength or at least on keeping his feet under him while blocking . So many times I have seen him bent back while trying to lead block or other times getting blown over. He definitely is not blowing open holes and getting to those linebackers as a lead blocker. you are right though, there is plenty of concern to go around.

Since our running was so inept in the 2nd half we decided to go to the air. It's always said that the running game opens up the passing game, but is the opposite not also true ? If Zwick completes some of those wounded duck overthrows, then they would have to respect the pass more. When you see that many overthrows, it has to making playing defense that much easier.

The bottom line about the Wisky game was, no matter how bad the running game, play calling (Not bad) , o-line play, qb play or defense, the reason we lost the game was turnovers. If Hall and Holmes don't fumble, we most likely win the game. Turnovers were the number 1 reason we lost, despite poor play in other areas. :oh: :io:

Truly makes me appreciate Jamar Martin. I never saw him get blown up on a play...

Herbie speaks

Herbie has dubbed our Bucks as the biggest disappointment of the season.

We're "on the verge of going 6-5 on the year... maybe."

Ouch.

Especially since I can't disagree with him (on the disappointment.. i still won't admit the possibility of that many losses )

edit: permit me to rephrase. I am disappointed, but I had unrealistic expectations. Herbie basically said we had a LOT of returning talent, and should have done better. Well, the talent's there, but the experience isn't

Sigh

Yes, Herbie has spoken about the disapointment, however I think it might be his disapointment as a former player an fan more than a sports anaylist. He must have had some unrealistic expectations as well. I do not agree with herbie about a lot of Talent coming back however. I mean who is he comparing this talent to anyway? I wonder if this might have brought back some old memories for Herbie? He is after all a much better anaylist than he was a football player. Anyway he's certainly on top of the world now. P-buck.

How many times have we ran the ball out of the "I". I didn't see it much last Saturday. (of course, I was drinking a lot) I would think that with Joe back we would go more with the "I" but I guess we continue to go 5 wide on third and short and have a designed roll out to Zwick's left where he is forced to throw on the run accross his body for an incompletion and a punt.
