Bitching about the 2004 Season

 Someone dinged me for this post. :boohoo: Looks like someone can't handle the truth. We're all upset about our team sucking so bad right now, but the blame doesn't fall on the analysts for calling it as they see it (which is accurate).

I kind of sense a subliminable message somewhere in there.....yep?

When is the last time we lost 4 B10 games in a row?

It just has to be eons ago. Looking at the scores from the last 4 is even worse.

35-21
33-27
24-13
33-7

-Thats a 31-17 average for those keeping score at home.

-Also 6-5 in our last 11 B10 games and aside from the 2002 season we are 11-8 in B10 play under JT.

It will be interesting to see how much rope 2002 buys him. Remember this is the first "all Tressel" team. All recruited and developed by JT and his staff under his system. 8-3 should have been the worst case scenario instead we are staring at 5-6 or worse.

its also the first year we have without half our original coaching staff.

0-4 in the Big Ten has never happened to Ohio State. However, we were 0-4 in the Western Conference in 1922. We picked up the win against Illinois with a mind blowing score of 6-3. I can't see us losing to Indiana, that is what gets a coach fired. Certainly Tressel wants to keep his job.

A lot of people are being WAY too hard on Herbie. Kirk is blasting OSU because he is a Buckeye at heart and this season is eating at him. After the Iowa game I have heard even the most loyal Tressel-ites question our entire teams philosophy. Herbstreit is the voice of millions of frustrated Buckeye fans whose voice isn't heard.

Kirk tries his hardest to stay unbiased in the national spotlight, but he is a total homer. He will likely always have a tendency to over-hype our good teams and bash our worse teams because it does effect him on a deeply emotional level.

What really bothers me is that a lot of us bash big name analysts because they are negative towards OSU. For some reason we are convinced everyone hates our team. This attitude makes it too easy to dismiss their comments. What excuse do you all have when Herbie tells us that this team isn't as good as we've been led to believe?

Let's face it, Kirk Herbstreit can light a fire under our fans, team and even coaches more than any other single person in the country. There are times where I wish I could look a coach or player in the face and tell them how I feel...Herbie has been the way I can, because he feels the same frustrations we do. Be glad that we have that kind of resource, and don't bash the guy. He is one of the best in the business and knows what he's talking about.

next year will be the true judge of Tressel's team. Pretty hard to judge after losing 14 draft picks, d-coordinator, rb coach, te coach, recruiting coordinator.

2005 will be the real indication of where this program is headed.

Tibs, I didn't know you were religious. Great post on conversions. Say... maybe we could get some of those Mormans to visit WHAC. Neck ties, white shirts, polite. Heck, maybe they'd look good in a scarlet vest?

At this stage, it's worth considering.

Herbstreit is what an Ohio State fan SHOULD BE. The man loves the school and when he said we were the disappointment he was right! Look at the talent, Tradition, Stadium, and definatly look at the coach and look at our record. COME ON NOW. We're Ohio State we shouldn't be 3-3.

I have an honest (semi-honest) question for everyone. Is it too late to switch blocking philosophy for this year? Most of our OL were brought up in 'basic' blocking schemes (find assignment-hit assignment-push assignment into turf). Give 'em a week against Indiana to work out the wrinkles and just go out and hit somebody. There's too much thinking going on, and not enough hitting (at least on the OL)
I've wondered the same thing myself - we've already hit rock bottom, so it's not like the OL will be set back any further by implementing a new scheme.

Problem is, I really don't think trying to make that kind of change mid-season is likely to work. All these plays they've been working on over, and over, and over, have been blocked a certain way (badly). What happens when all that changes (by which I mean spacing, timing, the 'look' and 'feel' of it... ) with a team as young as this one, it could just lead to even more confusion, missed assignments, embarrassing losses.
