Bitching about the 2004 Season

Any other HS coaches out there reading this feel free to chime in- What does Tressel see/feel/think-that other coaches DON'T and NEVER WOULD!?!?
Not a HS coach - but I don't think JT is trying to outscheme anyone.

I knew what Barry wanted to do with Badgers offense when they lined up, and presumably so did the Buckeyes - but it didn't matter, they were still successful.

It's the same mindset we had with Eddie - he we come, try and stop us.

Right now, the talent up front (and perhaps in the backfield too) is not developed enough or not good enough.

Then why continue to say "here we come try and stop us"?
I don't think that was our offensive mindset yesterday - i.e. we're going to run this play no matter what defense you're in.

If anything, we have a timid gameplan.

When we're running the statue of liberty we're trying to steal some yards; and our first 6 plays or so we're out of the shotgun formation.

Wisconson can have this mindset b/c they can execute it.

I wish we could as well - but you can only line up 11 guys so many ways. So I'm not sure what more JT can do if the line refuses to block, Zwick can't hit open receivers, and on and on and on....

they still suck....

3rd-8, OHST8 3:35 J. Stocco passed to D. Charles to the left for 8 yard touchdown. M. Allen made PAT

3rd-3, OHST11 11:20 J. Stocco passed to J. Orr to the left for 11 yard touchdown. M. Allen made PAT

Tibbs: "Do us all a favor and go meet Sollozo in a bar."

I've got a dinner date with Michael, Solozzo, and McCluskey tonight at Louis' Restaurant in the Bronx. Not a good idea?

First off, I think you people are putting the cart WAYYYY before the horse if you think this is 1999 all over again. Its not. We will win 8 games this year, mark it down.

Secondly, I keep hearing all these complaints about our offense, O-Line, etc. Our production is awful, but the talent level is there. Sims, Mangold, Datish, Schafer, and even a surprise performance by Kirk Barton (who looks to be a stud) have shown me a lot. I think they all have very high ceilings as players. I really can't complain about the O-Line, I'm sorry.

And the rest of the O? Mark it down: Zwick WILL be an All-Big Ten QB someday. That day is just not right now. There's no way you can heap all this pressure on him as a first year starter with no running game and complain about the results. I just don't see it.

The Recievers and TEs? They're all big time playmakers.

What about the D? We're loaded there and they couldn't stop anybody the last two weeks if you gave them all handguns.

The bottom line is, I've said this until I'm blue in the face: the coaching staff lost a ton in Spencer, D'Antonio, and Conley. Snyder hasn't proven to me that he can call a defensive game yet. And Tressell has been and is coaching like he's still at YSU. Its time for some changes.

And finally, I never thought it'd be .... Barzini all along.

This thread got me laughing this morning, thanks guys. So the solution to two losses is to fire Tressel. How many other colleges in the country would love to have him as their coach?

Our biggest problem at this point is along the offensive line. If anyone should be fired from our coaching staff it should be Bollman, I've been preaching this for a long time now. Jimmy B has done a horrible job of developing our offensive lineman, the talent is there, but they are not progressing.

We are also seeing how great of a D coordinator Dantonio was. Snyder has shown no ability to make adjustments, I believe that this will come with time.

The one bright part of this team is on special teams, 2 punt returns for TD's in the last two weeks is pretty damn good.

daddy: "Snyder has shown no ability to make adjustments, I believe that this will come with time."

Whoa! Hold on a second here. Ohio State is not a training ground for defensive coordinators. If he's not ready to make adjustments or call a game at this level right now, then let him go to a smaller school, get the in-game experience, and then come back. It is inexcusable that OSU doesn't have one of the top D coordinators at that position right now.

My major problem with Tressel has been that its seemed like "big-head" disease has set in. He hired his brother as Recruiting Coordinator, Snyder to his position, and has an offensive coordinator who is unimaginative and calls no plays. Ohio State should have one of the Top 10 assistants in the entire country at each spot in the coaching staff, not Tressell's favorites or 'yes-men.'

I can't excuse Snyder, I'm sorry. You should be ready to do all the things of a big time assistant if you get hired at Ohio State. If he wasn't ready (which obviously he's not), then go out and get the best guy for the job from outside the program.

daddy your right what a lol moment after NCST game we all agreed we played well enough on the road yes our o still needs help but no we've progressed to firing people wow. Lets just say it seems JT talks out both sides of his mouth roy hall gets set because he is not producing but ross and zwick don't our oline isn't getting it done but noone is replacing anyone. So it does start at the top and it should be the same for all players produce or get out of the way.

My issue is do any of you think that JT is going to fire Bollman?

He does not act like he sees the problem, and especially doesn't see his coaches as part of the problem.

Gameplanning is not as much of an issue as being prepared properly so that execution is better.

On offense the offensive line is the biggest problem with reguards to our execution. Who is the one in charge of getting our offensive line ready? Jim Bollman.

If JT had not won a National Championship two years ago,I would be calling for his head too. What we have seen this year, what has happened is completely unacceptable at Ohio State.

Don't thing 0-3 to start the Big Ten is out of question. Since JT can't be fired Bollman should be.

I dont think JT will fire Bollman either, it would be too hard to find another "yes man" who wouldnt rock the boat as an Offensive Coordinater and be willing to settle for mediocrity. I dont think Tressel thinks the coaches are the problem. In his mind it has worked for many years at the 1AA level , and it has worked at the 1A level when teams were kind of not expecting it. Now that teams have caught on he has got to be able to adjust to it. 1AA has some good coaches, but the assistants arent exactly the same caliber that they are at the 1A level, so what works down there scheme and philosophy wise, isnt going to work up here for as long because there are some GREAT assistant coaches up at the highest level, that are able to effectively game plan to stop "Tresselball".

Dick Tressel coaches the running backs and they haven't performed. Not sure if that's talent, coaching or the play of the guys up front. Coach Tressel brought in John Peterson to be the recruiting coordinator and according to Rivals we have the #2 class in America at this point. I'm not sure how tough it is to recruit at Ohio State but Peterson seems to be doing ok. He also did a fantastic job with the O-line at Miami(OH) and I think he was a good hire. Lou Holtz tried to lure Mark Snyder away to be the DC at South Carolina and I think he knows a thing or two about coaching. If Snyder had Will Smith, Darrion Scott, and Tim Anderson up front I suspect the defense would be playing better. Our front four has been terribly disappointing to this point of the season. No pressure on the quarterback and an inability to stop the run consistently is hurting this team. His schemes haven't been great and adjustments seem to be lacking but I think he should be given some time.

I do have a hard time defending Bollman and the development of the offensive line, or lack there of. While I think they have been average at protecting the quarterback all you need to know about them is on 1st and goal against Northwestern last week we ran the ball one time and on 3rd and short yesterday we went 5-wide and threw the ball. Does anyone think Tressel wanted to do anything but bring in two tight ends, line up in the I and run it down their throats? Our 0-line has been a problem for several years. We can only hope guys like Person, Mitchum, Skinner, Rehring, Boone, Bemoll, Cordle and whoever else we land in this class can turn the offensive line into a strength rather than our biggest weakness.

Living in an Unrealistic world?

Are you guys serious? Fire Tressel? You are the same people who wanted to fire Earle Bruce for going 9-3 (beat Michigan) for many years in a row and the same people who wantd to fire Cooper (highest winning percentage in the Big Ten and more NFL drafts) because he couldn't beat Michigan and win all the Bowl games. You probably would have called for Woody's head because the offense wasn't exciting enough. Get real! Tressel did what we asked for since 1968 - win a National Championship. I don't care if he won with Cooper's recruits or not - he still won - Cooper could not. We live in a day with limited scholarships and equal playing ground. The great athletes and players are going to places like Northwestern, Boise State, Miami of Ohio, etc... We have to realize that we might not challenge every year for the Big Ten and National Championship. This is no longer the Big Two and Little Eight. If you haven't noticed that the other Big Ten schools have pretty darn good coaches. Don't get me wrong, I go into each season dreaming of a Big Ten and NAtional Championship but I also have to reside in the real world. My suggestion is get a needle and pop that fairy tale bubble some of you seem to live in. We are very young and inexperienced and we will get better and if we don't, life will go on. I will hate to read some of your responses later in the year, because our schedule doesn't get any easier.

Killer: "On offense the offensive line is the biggest problem with reguards to our execution."

No way. The Offensive Line hasn't even had a chance to shine. The recipe for Offensive Execution at OSU against a good team should read like this:

Run, run, run, and by the third quarter, the D-Line for the opposing team will wear down and you can have your way with them. The lack of a servicable RB on this team doesn't allow the team to call any running plays, much less run the ball down someone's throat.

For example, let me take the Ohio State-Washington State game from '02:

At halftime, Ohio State trailed 7-6. In the 3rd Quarter, the Wazu D wore down at the constant pounding and OSU ran away with the game. Ohio State ran the ball 52 times that day and Clarett gained 230 yards; the team gained 292. Ohio State ran the ball 25 times yesterday. Half that amount. We also only ran the ball 37 times against NU. That doesn't get it done here.

In the NU game, Ohio State had 1st and goal at the six and called three pass plays because Ross can't gain a yard. 1st and goal at the six against Northwestern!!! How many Ohio State teams haven't punched the ball in on the ground in that situation in the 90+ times these teams have played??

It all comes down to the running game. Maurice Clarett or a great back would make this O-Line look like the Hogs or the Electric Company. I said this before the season, and I'm about blue in the face from saying it: YOU CANNOT WIN AT OHIO STATE IF YOU CANNOT RUN THE BALL!!
