Bitching about the 2004 Season

I just kissed the Mrs. goodnite.

The kids passed out about 2 hours ago in their sleeping bags in the living room, that is their saturday night treat.

Had a blast today watching my son's pee-wee team play, even though they lost a heartbreaker 6-0.

Also had to watch my beloved Buckeyes drop a game to what I feel was a better Wisconsin team.

YOU ARE GODDAMN RIGHT, IT COULD BE WORSE

And on the flip side, things can change in a year.

Auburn tried to hire a new coach last November. They screwed it up, Tuberville stays, and now they're at the top of the SEC and will be ranked 4th tomorrow, and deserve to be ranked higher than that.

I'll Start World War Iii

I've been around these parts for awhile, so I hope this post is taken for the way it's meant.

My feeling is, that two years removed from a National Championship, it's time to fire Jim Tressel. Let's be real fella's, the guy won the NC with John Cooper recruits, most of whom were drafted into the NFL. "Tresselball" revolves around special teams and defense, correct? Well, Cooper happened to leave Tressel sitting with Nugent and Groom, both of who were the best in the Nation in 2002. The 2002 defense was arguably the best we ever had here. All of them were Cooper guys.

The one player that was instrumental in winning the NC that Tressel recruited was Clarett. Has anyone seen him around here lately? Our Coach has been hammered by the media since the day he arrived here over his players off the field problems. DUI's galore, assault and battery, theft, etc.

JimTressel can simply do no good for this program. What he did here in 2002 can be equated to fucking Britney Spears on your first date. It can never get more exciting that that, right? Help me out here people, I'm lost.

hey...he won the national title...i will never forget that....but....

it has been how long now that the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY is the LAUGHING STOCK of college football in regards to offense....

this IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING...an era that produced OFFENSIVE numbers that were as good as anybody's in the land...

I LOVE COACH T....BUT HE NEEDS TO GET HIS HEAD OUT OF THE OFFENSES ASS....PERIOD...

as i said in another post.....at some point you need to let your 14 month old child walk and realize that they may fall over a couple of times before they get their feet...

6-5 is a distinct possibility, but not a definitive result yet. Now we'll see what kind of mettle this team has and how resourceful the coaches are. Some teams in this situation can win 3 or 4 down the stretch, murder someone in a bowl game by about 40, finish 8-4 and springboard their next season with a healthy dose of momentum. Maybe we can, and maybe we lose to Air Force in the Liberty Bowl again...time will tell.

I like Tressel and how he runs things. I think if we add a real Offensive mastermind type to the coaching mix, this could be a scary team for the foreseeable future.

Then again, the optimist in me says that will happen anyway :)

Few expected the orange bowl but 6-5 is inexcusable for a program like OSU. If we're a top 5-6 program nationally as we claim, we shouldn't have such a shitty season so soon considering we've gone 6-6 and 7-5 in the recent past (within last 5 yrs.). And for people saying 2005 is the year, maybe for a B10 title, but there's no way in hell I see us going undefeated w/ games v. Texas, @ scUM, @ PSU, @ Minnesota. Our team should be significantly better but schedules also play an important role and playing tough away games like that is a huge challenge.

Dubs:

I agree with a lot of what you said. I don't think Tress should be fired, but I agree with your points.

Look, let's face it: Tressellball has been sniffed out. Just like the 46 Defense, the Run & Shoot, the Wishbone, etc.: it was a good style of play for a period of time, but its run its course.

I can honestly sit at the TV and see how differently coaches gameplan for a game against OSU than even two years ago. Now, if I can see how to beat a Tressellball team in my living room, you can be damn sure that Barry Alvarez can see it on film too with a week to prepare.

I said this on another thread: this is not Youngstown State. He's coaching and recuiting like he's still there.

And on a personal note, these games are freeking boring!! Buckeye football is my relaxation and my escape from life. Going to the dentist is more exciting than watching this team play. And the games that you want to be snoozers (Marshall, SDSU, Cincinnati in '02, Northwestern, etc.) end up grinding your insides to sawdust!

For those calling for radical change:

Just remember Callahan got 70 hung on him today as his QB threw 5 interceptions trying to go away from the "traditional" Nebraska offense and move to the West Coast bullshit. I'm as frustrated as anyone, but we are NOT a school that wants to, needs to, or should throw 4 or 5 seasons away radically switching things around, becoming a laughing stock in the process, and hoping they work out in the end (and don't end up like they did when they tried to install the spread at Army).
Personally, I think the coaches should forget (OK, lessen the priority on) the skill players and concentrate on recruiting offensive linemen for the next 2 or 3 years. Get those guys, and things turn around in a hurry (look at what Mangold means for us). The skill guys get the print on the recruiting sites, but the O linemen are the only thing that can take our offense from the outhouse to the penthouse.

Ouch grad21, that hurt (almost)

My point here is that you can take anything positive about anything and turn it into a negative if you want to. We went from 28-2, to 28-3, to 28-4 in a two week span. Great CFB is played all around the country, and problems arise any time you put 120 18-22 year old kids together.

Tressel has his system and we as fans either need to accept it, or go root for someone else. I'll accept it until we go 7-5 again. At that point, and I thought I'd never say it, would be time for me to want to say "goodbye" to JT.
