He obviously knew taking the job that there would be penalities, maybe he thought they would be less severe..but let's not forget the death penalty was being discussed at one point. He knew penalities were coming and was fine with it..because it works perfectly into the point/argument I'm about to make.
Why is taking an NFL job necessarily a better option for him at this point? He has 3 things at Penn State: A nice paycheck, probably the most job security in all of football and what amounts to almost a mulligan when it comes to future job prospects if he ever leaves.
Think of it this way. Unless he gets caught cheating or relaunching the second mile or something there is really no possible way he's going to get axed before 5 or 6 years and even if he goes after 6 there will be a buyout involved. Weigh that against a job with say Cleveland..where getting fired after 2 or 3 years is a very real possibility. Even if he does get fired by PSU at the end of this..it's not like that's going to kill his coaching career, Weis went back and got a job with the NFL..then another college coaching job, the guy will still have options. All he did here was build up even more good will in Happy Valley (not to mention a boost in reputation nationwide) WHILE getting more money out of the deal. The guy..or at least his agent..is not stupid.
In one way I agree, but whoever left a 9 mil buyout in his contract is a [censored]ing idiot. That is a non-starter for pretty much any job he would jump to. He really could have taken PSU to the shower (err... woodshed) if he had worked in no buyout if PSU was penalized by the NCAA.
