Bill O’Brien (HC Boston College, aka BillyBob O’Buttchin et al)

Really? I'd like to know more.

Your point on the buyout is understandable.

I've listened to him talk during the post-game press conferences. He always stays classy. Takes the blame for losses and is fair in recognizing good performances. Never throws anyone under the bus. I think he is a good coach. In any case, he is the best thing to happen to PSU in a long long LONG time.

Once McDaniels became available the writing was on the wall. Tom Brady kept it cordial in public, but he hated working with O'Brien. Had O'Brien not left for the PSU gig, he would have been looking for work elsewhere. As it were, it was a clean break where neither party had to make anyone look bad.

Bill O'Brien decides to stay at Penn State

Bill O'Brien is staying at Penn State, two sources with direct knowledge of his decision told SI.com. On a day when reports surfaced that O'Brien interviewed with the Cleveland Browns and was leaning toward leaving for the NFL, he made a decision to stay late on Thursday.
The decision came after the university put together what one source called a "massive push" to keep O'Brien in State College. He and his staff are expected to receive significant pay raises, although details haven't been finalized. O'Brien currently makes $2.3 million per year.

It's a dog eat dog world and BO'B knew PSU was wearing milk bone underwearReply He had all the power and leverage and he did exactly as he should. He proved in year one he deserved to be a top paid coach in the B1G and now he will be. Good for him. Congrats BO'B! Now don't f_ck up!

Bet he milked the attention from the NFL for a significant pay raise from the cultists. Now he has a well playing job with significantly lowered expectations. The ped staters will be singing his praises now just for staying aboard.

If there's one thing that fan base isn't lacking, it's delusion--if O'Brien goes 6-6 for a couple of years, those idiots will be all over him, notwithstanding the significant hurdles he's facing as head coach there.

"I'm not a one-and-done guy," O'Brien told pennlive.com on Thursday night. "I made a commitment to these players at Penn State and that's what I am going to do. I'm not gonna cut and run after one year. That's for sure."

Transation: I'll stay at Penn State since they will now be paying me more $$$ than the Browns offered.

Then why even interview? (This question is rhetorical)

I have to agree with you there, I should have added they will sing his praises during this offseason, right up until the losses start piling up.

Eh, I don't think this guy is that dumb..I don't think the people are seeing the big picture here.

He obviously knew taking the job that there would be penalities, maybe he thought they would be less severe..but let's not forget the death penalty was being discussed at one point. He knew penalities were coming and was fine with it..because it works perfectly into the point/argument I'm about to make.

Why is taking an NFL job necessarily a better option for him at this point? He has 3 things at Penn State: A nice paycheck, probably the most job security in all of football and what amounts to almost a mulligan when it comes to future job prospects if he ever leaves.

Think of it this way. Unless he gets caught cheating or relaunching the second mile or something there is really no possible way he's going to get axed before 5 or 6 years and even if he goes after 6 there will be a buyout involved. Weigh that against a job with say Cleveland..where getting fired after 2 or 3 years is a very real possibility. Even if he does get fired by PSU at the end of this..it's not like that's going to kill his coaching career, Weis went back and got a job with the NFL..then another college coaching job, the guy will still have options. All he did here was build up even more good will in Happy Valley (not to mention a boost in reputation nationwide) WHILE getting more money out of the deal. The guy..or at least his agent..is not stupid.

Re: At least five teams reached out to O?Brien, but the discussions weren?t thought to have reached a serious level. Linta declined to identify the teams showing interest in his client. He said there would probably be discussions about O?Brien?s current contract.
?The leverage he has at Penn State is his integrity,? Linta said.

Entire article: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/01/04/bill-obrien-staying-at-penn-state/

Leverage to get more $$$ from Penn State.

Also, his agent seems like a real douchebag.
