Big Ten Power Rankings

Yesterday was a great day for Big10 basketball going 7-2 with only one semi-bad loss:

Wins:
Ohio State (17) 71, Iona 53
Michigan State (19) 67, Texas (5) 63
Purdue (13) 76, Davidson (22) 58
Minnesota 70, Louisville (9) 64
Illinois 82, Detroit 51
Michigan 89, Oakland (MI) 76
Wisconsin 57, Coppin State 46

Losses:
Stanford 65, Northwestern 59 (not a bad loss, NW hung in tougher than I thought they would)
Drake 60, Iowa 43 (Drake is not a bad team but Iowa needs to find a way to win these games)

I think we may see 5 ranked teams on Monday (Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan State, Minnesota, Illinois)

Here they are....

1. Purdue - this is probably the most talented Big 10 team and they are finally starting to play like it. Davidson is in no way a bad team and Purdue dominated them.

2. Ohio State - The surprise team in the Big 10.

3. MSU - Big win over Texas puts them above scUM.

4. scUM - Let's see if the hot start carries over into Big Ten play.

5. Minnesota - I TOLD you all Tubby would have this team going in the right direction this year.

6. Illinois - THE sleeper tournament team in the Big 10.

7. Wisconsin - struggles with wayyyy to many teams that they should blow out easily to be ranked any higher than this.

8. Northwestern - Northwestern is going to ruin someone's tournament hopes this year.

9. Penn State - 9-2 but against who? Sure a school that isn't exactly a basketball power is going to load up on cupcakes, but the two teams with any talent they have played (URI and Temple) beat them.

10. Iowa - another team that can't seem to beat anyone on the road or anyone with any type of talent.

11. Indiana - It's going to be a long year but Tom Crean has them hustling and playing hard.

My rankings and last weeks in parantheses:

  1. Purdue (4) - Great game against Davidson, starting to play like the team many thought they were
  2. Michigan State (3) - Good win vs. Texas, again finally playing better ball
  3. Ohio State (1) - Slow first half vs. Iona, nice second half especially without Lighty
  4. Minnesota (7) - Very nice win over Louisville to get that first signature win of the season
  5. Michigan (2) - Moved down mainly because other teams are finally starting to play to their ability.. could easily switch them with Minnesota and would have if they blew out Oakland
  6. Illinois (6) - The addition of Alex Legion gave this team some much needed depth
  7. Wisconsin (5) - No signature wins puts Wisconsin at the bottom of the top 7
  8. Northwestern (8) - Played Stanford tough last night... needed that win to build a tournament resume
  9. Penn State (10) - Play today
  10. Iowa (9) - Semi-bad loss vs. Drake moves them down
  11. Indiana (11) - No commentary necessary... almost as fun as putting scUM at the bottom of the football rankings

My rankings are very similar to the above two. However, I have Michigan around the #7 slot because I think they will be up and down this year. Maybe right now they deserve a little bit higher but I can't see them above Minnesota or Illinois and certainly not the first three. I have a really hard time with Wisconsin. I don't know how good they are and Bo makes them better as the season progresses but right now I have them around #8.

Stanford is a very good team and so Northwestern might be the surprise team in the Big 10 this season but the Big 10 might be the toughest conference in the country right now so Northwestern is #9 in my rankings.

Purdue is not the most talented team in the Big Ten. I'm not going to read too much into their beatdown of Davidson, a team that is a "mid-major" in just about every sense of the term. Both OSU (with Lighty) and MSU clearly have more talent on their rosters than Purdue (and a lot more than Davidson). Michigan has two guys that are better NBA prospects than any player PU has.

Here is where I think the teams are right now:

1. Michigan
2. MSU
3. Purdue
4. OSU (are #1 with Lighty, losing him drops them a few spots)
5. Minnesota
6. Illinois
7. Wisconsin
8. PSU
9. Northwestern
10. Iowa
11. Indiana

I said that about Purdue all last season in the power rankings thread for last season and all they did was keep on winning. They might not be the most talented but they just seem to win. Davidson has given some pretty good teams some good games this season. I well it meant that against Purdue that they did not look very good because they did not shoot very well including Curry which was very surprising to me.

I'm interested to see how the teams play against each other in the league.

I think Purdue & Sparty are the favorites for the Big Ten Championship, with TSUN, OSU, and Minnesota as darkhorses. I haven't bought into TSUN yet (though they look awfully impressive) and I was a big believer in the Bucks until they lost their heart and soul this past week to injury. I think Minnesota is the real sleeper this year for the Big Ten title. After that, I wouldn't be surprised to see Wiscy or Illinois in the bottom 3-4 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Northwestern, Iowa, or PSU in the top 6-7 come March. I will be in complete shock if Indiana doesn't finish dead last. Besides the Hoosiers, it's really wide open this year in the Big Ten and they are most certainly one of the best 2-3 conferences in the nation this year, if not the best. The shear depth of the league is just unreal.
