I love the Big Ten Network. Sure, their coverage sucks for football, but for Buckeye hoops, it kicks ass! I've had more games available this year than most years combined.

Not according to Comcast / Putting Fans First ....

The BTN has "stolen" games away from the cable viewer and will still be showing the Big Ten tournament (allegedly)

I am fortunate to have DirecTV and get the Big 10 Network, but I can't understand why Time Warner and the network can't come to some sort of agreement. Big Ten fans have waited a long time for a network like this and most fans can't get it because the largest cable company in the country can't come to a compromise. I can tell you that I enjoy alot of the programming on the network. Friday Night Tailgate is a good way to get ready for football Saturday's, and the rebroadcast of classic games is a great way to pass time when there are no live sports on. The network has some work to do but it is doing okay so far with the exception of it's availability to the fans it was created for.

NETWORK TO AIR NATIONAL SIGNING DAY SPECIALS

bigten-tonight-200.jpg

Fueled by months, and sometimes years, of speculation and controversy, National Signing Day is the most anticipated day in college football. No single event has a greater effect upon the fates of football programs and the fortunes of coaching staffs.

The Big Ten Network will delve into the recruiting process, present expert analysis and unveil video highlights of the Big Ten's newest student-athletes with three editions of BIG TEN TONIGHT: SIGNING DAY SPECIAL:
  • A live 90-minute show beginning at 5:30 PM ET Wednesday, Feb. 6;
  • A 60-minute edition of BIG TEN TONIGHT later that evening with additional analysis;
  • And a live 60-minute show on at 6 PM ET on Thursday, Feb. 7.
"These shows will allow Big Ten fans to look into the crystal ball and see the future of their favorite team and their archrivals," Big Ten Network coordinating producer Quentin Carter said.

Wednesday's programs will include portions of university press conferences, interviews with Big Ten coaches and instant analysis. On Thursday, Big Ten Network experts will closely examine each school's recruiting class and evaluate how each team addressed its most immediate and long-term needs.

Hosts Dave Revsine and Rick Pizzo will be joined by Big Ten Network analysts Gerry DiNardo, Howard Griffith, Chris Martin and national recruiting experts Bob Lichtenfels of Scout.com and Tom Lemming of CSTV.

It's not like I'm not getting pissed at the time it has taken TW to do what they need to do, but if you've been with them for any length of time you know how slow they are to give a rat's ass about the consumer. If I don't have BTN by July there'll be a dish on my chimney.

Have to wonder what would have happened had the bucks won in NO.

I caught the Big Ten Tonight show last night and was shocked to see Lemming on the program. I am very interested in seeing how he covers signing day without his beloved ND.

Been there, done that. It was a great day when I told TW to go pound salt. Nice to see they're still slow to change. They were never slow to increase prices every January.

I love DirecTV and the BTN.

... And for what it's worth. In order to get the BTN in HD you need the upgraded dish. This was done for free for us, and I assume that it's a free upgrade to at least all HD subsribers. Being in Chicago with Dish Network for a few years and then a switch to DTV I've always dreaded the winter snow / weather cutting out the signal. With the new dish (it's the oval one btw), and one of the worst winters for snow in recent memory here in Chicago... we've never lost signal. The installers said that we should expect to see better signal in bad weather, but I'd have never expected to see this.

Best,

I have DishTV and they quietly and effectively got the job done with the Big 10 Network. When we got our dish back in Sept, my wife also was happy to tell TW where to stick it.

They installed the HD dish when we got it initially installed, even though we didn't order HD. We only need a new receiver.

We have been really happy.

Tom Izzo criticizes network
Wednesday, February 27, 2008
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Tom Izzo has had enough.

Michigan State's basketball coach has tried to spout the company line about the newly formed Big Ten Network even as it struggles to reach agreements with cable companies such as Comcast, effectively forcing fans to bars and restaurants to watch some games.

But the flood of letters and calls to Izzo from frustrated fans led to his speaking out.

"I think it has been a PR nightmare," Izzo said Monday. "And, I think it has hurt all of us."

The Big Ten Network and Comcast each tried to be upbeat Tuesday in their responses to Izzo's comments.

"We clearly know it's been a difficult situation for fans, and we are working very hard to reach agreements with other cable companies so that they can have access to the network," said Elizabeth Conlisk, Big Ten Network vice president of communications. "Coach Izzo has been enormously supportive of the network. For him to express his frustration ? it only makes us say we're not happy with the situation, either."

I continue to believe that the Big Ten Network is pure folly. It will not last two more years because it is hurting Big Ten sports. I know that it has given lots of exposure to the many sports that get little exposure for the Big Ten, but it is killing national and especially international coverage for football and basketball. Alums eventually grow tired and that means a lot of alum support for athletics and other programs at the universities is going to take a major knock. Ohio State, TSUN, etc are not Harvard and don't have their endowment. We also don't have their clubiness and advancement on the old school tie.

The Big Ten needs its alumni and plenty of them are very disappointed to not see their favorite sport teams anymore, due to the BTN. The Big Ten teams ignore this at their own peril.

I think the Big Ten and university presidents were a bit naive as they went into this. They have stepped into the middle of an ongoing battle between much bigger parties - the content owners and the content delivery channels. Both want the lion's share of the profits and don't really care about individual consumers.

The cable companies are very willing to see the Big Ten Network fail if it keeps Disney from gaining more power.

Think back to the early days of the internet. People paid AOL for content even if it came form other sites. Today you pay individual sites for content plus you pay for access. That is what the content providers want as the end game. They can make access a commodity and charge more for content.

You may think that an ala carte menu approach would be ideal. I don't agree because based on my experience, it will never work the way we think it should. I would much rather have a cable company negotiating with Disney for me than doing it myself.

While the current situation is far from ideal, it may be better than any of the alternatives.

If you mean, in the case of TWC.. They make you pay for their service AND any package you want added on to that... If Big Ten Network were to reach an agreement with TWC, it would likely go on their sports tier (which I already pay for and love) and I have absolutely no problem with that!

BTN is horrible for basketball. Football isnt a big deal because you only have a handful of games and they're on Saturday (People will go to bars, etc.). But as far as fans following basketball- most people arent going to go to a bar every Wednesday to watch the OSU play hoops. I've watched the Bucks forever on channel 10 (even Obies and Ayers bad teams). Yes, I know that I've been spoiled......... However, I have followed them less this season then any season I can remember. I can't imagine that I'm the only one and think that is detrimental to our BBall program. Just a curious question- What's this year attendance compared to 2 years ago? (we'll throw out last year, due to the unique situation)
