Big Ten could reap $2.8B from network deal

News Corp. projects that the Big Ten Network could pay $2.8 billion to the Big Ten Conference over the 25-year life of its deal to operate the channel, according to the media company?s most recent 10-Q federal filing, which provided the first glimpse of its agreement with the conference.
The Rupert Murdoch-owned News Corp. has a 20-year contract with the Big Ten, with an option for five more years.
The total payout over the term of the 25-year agreement is based on profit projections by News Corp., and the money distributed to the schools on the front end will be significantly less than the average over the life of the deal.

If I am right, this is a $66 million deal this year that escalates about 4% a year in their projections. So, even if the inflation rate hangs at about 4%, it's about $6 million a year per university in 2008 dollars.

Sounds a whole lot less impressive when you think about how many alumni are angered by not being able to see their team.

Nothing like living in the City that hosts the B10 Mens and Womens Championships and not being able to get any B10 games on the City's major cable provider.

So glad that I can watch SEC, B12, and ACC games until the cows come home....

Another story on the Comcast deal.

SN

After a flurry of backroom deals, the Big Ten Network appears poised to land its most significant carriage deal to date, as top executives from Comcast and the network have agreed on the framework of an agreement, according to sources from both sides.

A signed deal could still be weeks, or even months, away, as lawyers from both sides hammer out the specifics. Snags still could develop, but sources are optimistic that a deal will get done.

Chicago Tribune

Negotiations continue over issues such as new media and video on demand, but officials expressed a high level of optimism that a deal would be completed, certainly in time for football season.

One insider quantified his optimism as a 95 out of 100.

Some less than reassuring news for those of you with Time Warner though...

But BTN officials hope a Comcast agreement would pressure the other cable companies to follow suit, although sources say the BTN has had virtually no dialogue with Time Warner.

Big Ten Network, Time Warner Stalemate Continues - News - nbc4i.com -

No real surprise, but still no progress with Time Warner

A Time Warner representative said that talks between Time Warner and Big Ten Network have stalled in the months since the last season. Judy Barbao said Time Warner wants to get back to the bargaining table with the Big Ten Network, but said the sticking points remain the same.

Time Warner said the Big Ten Network is too expensive and should be on a special sports tier -- where customers who want it can pay extra for it.
The Big Ten Network said its asking price is fair for a commodity that the people of Central Ohio want.

I am fine if they offer it on an extra sports tier and I pay for it. As long as I get it somehow, I will be fine, though we already pay a ton for so many channels not to get the one event we really want. If they don't get it settled by August I'll probably get DISH.

Don't hope for any better on DISH. I got BTN with the DISH Top 200 plan - but they took it off and put it on a Sports Tier here in CT. You now have to pay extra for it here - $5.99 - I think. BTW - DISH still shows it as part of the plan on their web site - so be wary when checking it out.

FWIW - DISH blamed BTN when I called to complain. :(
