Big Ten Basketball Thread

Sorry, 40 I don't see anyone beating MSU and Indiana in all their games. If I was looking at this very optimistically I could say that we and Pur have a chance. Wisc might only on the strentgh of their defense. Every team in your top 5 has to beat all the others to win the b10 and the only teams I see with that capability are MS and Ind. All five might get into the dance and we have a chance to get there especially if we can beat Pur and Wisc and Ind or MS.
I sure hope we can do it and I'm cheering as hard as I can but.......

I know very well that this is an optimistic outlook on things...

But we went to MSU, played the worst first 15 minutes of just about any stretch we have played all season...We have them at home the very last game of the season...I see no reason we can't win that game at home...

As for IU I talked yesterday about how teams are going to be able to matchup against IU in the big ten because they are not big down low, and if teams can slow Gordon up like UCONN did yesterday then teams have a chance...I think we have a solid chance against them at home in 2 weeks especially coming off 3 wins hopefully against lesser opponents and we get some confidence, and a big home crowd...

I see no reason we can't beat Purdue at home we honestly should of beat them on the road, but our youth got to us...

As for Wisky they lost at Purdue, I think we can beat them at home...We only have 2 more tough road games in Minny at @ IU...I think we lose at IU because we are really sucking on the road, and that is a very tough place to play...

I am in no way saying this is the end all be all, I am just merely pointing out the teams toughest games left, and saying that the home team has been winning most of the games so far between the tough teams this season, and pointed out what it would look like if the home teams continue to win...I think it benefits us having the most home games than anyone else left...

Agree with what you have said. I think we can beat MSU at home. Especially because it will be on Senior Day and Butler, Hunter, and Twig will want to go out with a bang. I think we can handle Indiana at home. I am beginning to think they are a little overrated. Their SOS is not very good at all. I also think Purdue and Wiskey at home are very winnable.

Minnesota will be tough at their place but I think that is even a possibility. I don't hold out much hope for IU at their place but you never know.

What scares me the most are those 2 games against the weasels. I know they are bad but there is something telling me not to take them lightly and I am afraid we might.

Some info about Sampson's schedule or lack thereof

The Big Ten's athletic reputation suffered another blow over the weekend, and it had nothing to do with the Southeastern Conference. Indiana's loss Saturday to Connecticut, somewhere between the fourth- and eighth-best men's basketball team in the Big East, was met with shock. It shouldn't have been. What looked like the best team in an iffy conference might be ready to be exposed.

The Hoosiers entered the game at 17-1 and ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press poll, but the 68-63 home loss to UConn, which suspended two of its top six players for the game, could be just the first step in a fall.

According to ESPN.com's daily rankings, Indiana has faced the 170th-toughest schedule in the nation, the softest in the Big Ten, with only Butler having an easier road in the Top 25. They've played just three games against teams in the top 50 of the RPI, losing to UConn and Xavier and beating Illinois State. While they are 6-0 in the Big Ten, they haven't played a single game against any of the four other conference teams - Michigan State, Wisconsin, Purdue and Ohio State - currently playing a level of basketball recognizable to most college fans.

No. 10 Michigan St. 77, Michigan 62 -- Drew Neitzel and Kalin Lucas each scored 18 points and Michigan State (18-2, 6-1) beat Michigan (5-15, 1-7) in a Big Ten game in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans opened the game with an 8-0 run and started the second half with a 10-1 burst, putting them ahead 45-28.
Playing off Michigan running back Mike Hart referring to Michigan State as a little brother last fall, the Breslin Center crowd chanted, "Little Sisters! Little Sisters!" at the end of the game.

No. 8 Michigan State 51, Illinois 41 -- Drew Neitzel scored nine of his 15 points during a key stretch in the second half, helping Michigan State (19-2, 7-1) beat Illinois (10-12, 2-7) in a Big Ten game in East Lansing, Mich., and set a school record.

Purdue 51, Iowa 50 -- Keaton Grant made the winning free throw with 1.4 seconds left and Purdue (16-5, 7-1) held off Iowa (10-12, 3-6) in a Big Ten game in West Lafayette, Ind.

This game should have went into OT. I think the Iowa coach made a big mistake. The score was tied 50-50 with 5 seconds left and neither team had a TO remaining. Purdue had to take the ball out of bounds and go the length of the court after each team had called their final TO. The Iowa coach had no one guard the guy that inbound the ball and did not guard the Purdue player at half-court who caught the inbounds pass. The guy just caught the pass and dribbled toward the basket and shot. A "foul" was called on the Iowa player and the Purdue player made one of two free throws.

I cannot understand why the Iowa coach did not have someone guard the Purdue player who inbounded the ball (can anyone say Duke/Kentucky) and even worse she led a Purdue player catch the ball freely at half-court.

I just hope Thad did not teach Thad Lich... to do that.

I was dumbfounded as I watched Iowa sit back and wait for Purdue to attack. Grant had a running start at a still defender... not hard for someone with athletic ability to get around that. That blame lies totally on the coach.

Grant did make a great decision (or a smart call by Purdue's coach)... Grant had made 27 straight free throws, including the first of 2, and missed the second on purpose so Iowa had no chance at a tie/win with a long pass (Iowa had no timeouts). Definition of unselfishness.

Hey, I am still at school at Butler University where Lickliter, Iowa's coach, was at before his current job and he rarely ever guarded the man throwing the inbounds pass in situations like that. Cost him a few games at butler during my time her for sure. Can't understand it but i guess he has some reason for doing it since he seems to do it often.

As big of a difference there is in records between 1-5 and 6-11 in the conference right now, you would think that 5 would make it from the Big 10 as long as OSU and Purdue don't tank down the stretch. Even if the Bucks tie for 5th, they should make it in just on SOS alone. Now if Purdue is in the 5 hole, they will probably need a win or 2 in the Big 10 tourney to solidify their spot. If either Purdue or OSU get hot down the stretch, the conference could end up with 4 ranked teams which I think will help them get that 5th bubble team in as well.
