College basketball roundup: Hughes' 22 lead Badgers over Illini

Friday, January 11, 2008 3:20 AM

Associated Press

No. 21 Wisconsin 70, Illinois 60 -- Trevon Hughes scored 22 points and Brian Butch had 16 to lead Wisconsin to a Big Ten victory over Illinois in Madison, Wis., last night to give the Illini their first four-game losing streak under coach Bruce Weber.
Illinois (8-8, 0-3) managed to hang around for much of the game by grabbing 13 offensive rebounds while limiting Wisconsin to just four and shooting well from behind the three-point line, a rarity for the Illini.
Calvin Brock and Trent Meacham both had 14 points for Illinois.

Not time to push the panic button, yet

CHAMPAIGN - The Illini basketball coaching staff is like Mr. Goodwrench these days.

They're under the hood of a car with a sputtering engine, patching leaky hoses, replacing frayed wires, twisting wrenches and checking the diagnostics.

And when they're not doing the hands-on basketball stuff, like stressing the importance of fewer turnovers and better defense, they are having heart-to-heart conversations with players who are feeling the stress of a team-wide slump.

Coach Bruce Weber and his staff have had just two days to provide a much-needed tuneup for a team that on Thursday night lost at home for the third time this season. If Illinois is going to salvage anything from the Big Ten season, winning games like today's home contest against Penn State are an absolute necessity.

I think it is obvious that Wiscy has improved each week of the season and the Illini have not.
In fact for each step Wisconsin or Ohio State has taken forward, Illinois has taken one step back as the season has progressed. By the end of the year, they might be wishing for an NIT bid.

MSU faces struggling Hawkeyes
Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Iowa fans got a frightening glimpse of how far the Hawkeyes are from the Big Ten's elite. Iowa (7-9, 0-3) hit rock bottom against Ohio State on Wednesday, losing 79-48 in a game that wasn't even that close. The Buckeyes led 45-17 at halftime and mercifully took their foot off the gas after jumping ahead by as much as 37.

Wait a minute. Basketball? 43-36 in basketball?

*rubs eyes*[/sarcasm]

I still don't believe it. What, did Michigan State decide to go to sleep? Didn't we crush Iowa earlier this week?

How could this possibly happen.?

MSU held to school-record low for points in game during shot-clock era

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Michigan State saw its winning streak end in historically futile fashion.
Tony Freeman scored a season-high 22 points and lowly Iowa stunned No. 6 Michigan State 43-36 on Saturday night, holding the Spartans to a school-record low for points in a game during the shot-clock era.

The loss end Michigan State's winning streak at 11 games.

The Spartans, who were second in the Big Ten in scoring offense, had just 18 points over the final 28:08. Michigan State was averaging 77.7 points, but its 36 points were just barely half of its previous season low of 63. The Spartans (14-2, 2-1 Big Ten) went 16-of-52 from the field, hit just one free throw and committed 18 turnovers.

I watched some of it flipping from the Pats/Jags game.

Iowa played lights out man to man and took MSU's guards completely out of it. Without their scoring MSU was toast and that kid who started hot against us was unconcious. Neitzel is looking extremely overrated at this point in the season.

This is going to make our game with MSU a living bitch but I'm starting to have my doubts as to their supremecy over the B10 this season. Looks like Texas wasn't all that and they struggled with Minny and Purdue at home iirc.

Time will tell but I'm beginning to think the B10 race is a legit 4 horse event.

Indiana forward D. J. White ducks under Illinois' Mike Tisdale. White had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the Hoosiers' victory.

No. 10 Indiana 62, Illinois 58 -- Eric Gordon and Indiana stuck it to Illinois again.
The high-scoring freshman, who reneged on an oral commitment to the Illini and signed instead with the Hoosiers, had 17 points and Indiana rallied from a seven-point deficit in the second half to beat Illinois yesterday in a Big Ten game in Bloomington, Ind.
It was Indiana's 10th straight victory and 27th in a row at home.
"I was pretty excited. I knew this was going to be a big game for us," Gordon said. "We tried to look at it like just another Big Ten game and to just get a win. We just needed to relax and deal with all the pressure they put on us."
Big Ten rebounding leader D.J. White had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Armon Bassett had all 11 of his points in the second half for the Hoosiers (14-1, 3-0).
Shaun Pruitt led Illinois (8-9, 0-4) with 14 points and Brian Randle had nine points and 10 rebounds but missed a potential tying basket in the closing seconds.
