Florida State Hinting Strongly At Leaving ACC

(Florida State podcasters thinking FSU will be in the B1G within the next 5 years -- starts around 13:10)

So yeah. Florida State's academics suck probably too much to be in the B1G, but they are publicly putting it out there that they probably aren't sticking around in the ACC

I thought I heard somewhat recently that FSU was quickly improving their academic standing?

I think the SEC and B1G would have quite the battle for FSU, but I think getting away from UF would be the ultimate winner. IMO FSU is THE top target and it's not particularly close.

FSU brings zero market value to the SEC. Would bring Tallahassee hillbillies to the B1G market, but I don't want that cesspool associated with Ohio State in any way.

Viewership brings in media contract money. Viewership wise, they are currently #1 in the ACC in front of Clemson, and would be #3 in the B1G behind Ohio State & TSUN and in front of Penn State, Wisconsin, and the rest of the current B1G

It only takes 4 or 5 top athletes to have a shot at a track NC. It you have a Chris Nelloms or Jesse Owens who can guarantee 2 or 3 firsts and others who can guarantee a couple of firsts or seconds - 1936 Bucks Owens won 100 dash, 220 dash, 220 hurdles, and long jump. Charlies Beethman won the 880, Dave Albritton and Mel Walker tied for first in the high jump. Bucks ended up second with 74 points

USU won by getting a ton of top ten finishes in everything. Depth over stars.

OK, the ol' track coach in me takes over. Look at these performances - think cinder track, thick leather shoes, think wool singlets, think using a garden spade to dig your starting blocks. think of the state of nutrition and weight training in the Depression years.

100-meter dash
1. Jesse Owens, Ohio State - 10.2 seconds (new world record)
2. Foy Draper, USC
3. Sam Stoller, Michigan
4. Adrian Talley, USC
5. Harvey Wallender, Texas
6. George Boone, USC

200-meter dash
1. Jesse Owens, Ohio State - 21.3 seconds
2. Harvey Wallender, Texas
3. Foy Draper, USC
4. Jack Weiershauser, Stanford
5. Herschel Neil, Northwest (Missouri) State Teachers
6. Clark Crane, USC

220-yard low hurdles
1. Jesse Owens, Ohio State - 23.1 seconds
2. Don Elser, Notre Dame
3. Ben Willis, Kentucky
4. Jack Patterson, Rice
5. Dick Kearns, Colorado
6. Leland Lafond, USC

400-meter run
1. Archie Williams, California - 47.0 seconds

800-meter run
1. Charles Beetham, Ohio State - 1:53.0
2. Ross Bush, USC
3. Marmaduke Hobbs, Indiana
4. Joe McGrath, Notre Dame
5. George O'Brien, Ohio State
6. Louis Brothers, Rice

Field events

Broad jump
1. Jesse Owens, Ohio State - 25 feet, 10+7⁄8 inches
2. Kermit King, Pittsburg (Kansas) State Teachers
3. George Boone, USC
4. Donald Skinner, USC
5. Clark Crane, USC
6. Richard Brunton, Illinois

High jump
1. Dave Albritton, Ohio State - 6 feet, 6+1⁄8 inches
1. Mel Walker, Ohio State - 6 feet, 6+1⁄8 inches
3. Al Threadgill, Temple

To further hijack the thread, there's a video and article floating around somewhere of one of the top 100 meter runners in the world trying to run as Owens would have: vintage shoes, vintage track, no starting blocks. And even then, you couldn't remove the advantages the guy had in modern nutrition and training. He couldn't come close to matching Jesse Owens' time.

They're a non-starter. We told Texas to take Oklahoma out back, shoot them and then come back inside to talk. Okie and FSU are about the same academically, and Okie is a far superior football pick. So, FSU is a non-starter.

I hope you're right. Frankly, if they can't absouleutly dominate in the ACC why would they think they could do better in the Big Ten? Their sister pirate school, Miami, probably has similar ideas, the only thing they can see is the Big Ten TV contract, but at least Miami and their oceanic program would make a significant academic addition.

You missed my point I think. I believe we are agreeing with each other. FSU brings zero value to the SEC but could bring BTN cable subscriptions to Florida tv sets which would bring cash to the B1G...HOWEVER, I don't want panhandle hillbillies anywhere near the great state of Ohio.

Yeah. We've got enough of our own right here in certain parts of the state, amiright?

Miami or GaTech both have a far better chance (not sure how good though) than FSU (snowball chance in hell).

Yeah. Cable subscribers due to geography bring in Big Ten Network money, and Tallahassee isn't the huge/desirable market that conference wants like Rutgers and Maryland. That wasn't lost on me

But the big money is the media contracts ($7 billion over 7 years)

Those contracts are built on the backs of big games that drive eyeballs, viewership, and prime time slots. Florida State ticks that box (#1 viewership in ACC). Clemson ticks that box (#2 viewership in ACC). Oregon & Washington tick those boxes (the top 2 viewership schools left in the PAC 12 after USC & UCLA leave). And all four of those schools are unhappy with the media contracts that they are in the process of finalizing right now

Maybe I'm just done with the "holier than thou" academic attitude, but give me some good fucking football games. That's where my heads at

I agree.
A couple of posters here tried to get me to understand that the real money is in the academics or research or something that the conferences enable. And I don't want to give the impression that I don't believe that. But I still don't get where that money comes from or whatever.

Anyway, that's all well and good. But what does that do for me? Do we raise the trophy for having the best research? Bah. Give me touchdowns and Big Ten championships and wins over the SEC. Wins over Rutgers and Maryland are fine, and I don't have a problem with them in the Big Ten. But give me a reason to be excited about non-Buckeye games. I'm not going to care about Purdue vs. Rutgers. (Yeah, I'll still watch.) But how about Penn State vs. Florida State - that sounds more interesting.

Side note: I'll tune in for Maryland vs. Penn State to see what kind of trolling Maryland might do this year. I still love the fact that the cultists STILL are mad about Maryland not shaking hands in... I think it was 2014. HAHAHA!

The conferences don't enable the research. Even the B1G's consortium isn't quite what some make it out to be. The point is that at B1G schools, athletics is a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what academic research brings in (1.23B at OhioState last year), and it makes sense for the Big Ten schools to have some standards and only bring in peer institutions (and Nebraska). There will be plenty of peer institutions available down the road without taking in Florida Fucking State.

As for me, Ohio State is first, foremost and always a research university that has some good sports programs attached to it. I know that a large portion of our fanbase could care less about the university (and some are actually hostile to it because they see it as a threat to their football), and they're entitled to be wrong.

No reason to settle at this point.
B1G should evaluate universities on academics and athletics.
Since we're now on both coasts, geography isn't a significant issue.
