If we make a huge academic compromise with OU, we absolutely would need to balance that with UVA or UNC. And fuck Texas for all the reasons stated above by myself and others. Not only would they be a complete cancer on internal politics, but I think they really are just arrogant and delusional enough to try and go independent. I want a front row seat for that train wreck!

edit: Just read through Boren's comments. Anyone else get the feeling that, while he won't speak it, he wants to get the fuck away from Texas at all costs. I'm sure he and the Disney execs can commiserate on that one.

I get the same feeling. If Oklahoma gets invited to the B1G, it will be without Texas.

Do you think Oklahoma could commit to improving their academics as part of the invite? As the flagship university of the state, I'd think they could improve their academic standing pretty quickly if they made it a priority.

Based on comments from Boren, it appears that Oklahoma moving to the B1G west is a real possibility. Having Oklahoma and Nebraska in the west is a compelling combination, and could turn the B1G Championship game into a virtual bowl game. But realistically, who could we add to the east? Virginia would be great, but would they leave the ACC? Virginia Tech might be more realistic.

Could always add Pitt, just for the singular joy provided by how crazy(ier) it would drive the Pedsters.

Pipe dreams I'd like to see..
- PSU out, Pitt in. Everyone wins. FSU and PSU really do belong together. With ND and UNC no less.
- UVA and GTech from ACC
- OU joins, Purdue folds up their athletic program ala Chicago (or at least football)

Not sure if either the culture or the political climate exists in Oklahoma for that. Boren is committed to it, yet even as an influential former Senator, has he really moved the needle that far? And what happens after he's gone? That state seemed to be just fine for over a century with only worrying about how well OU did in the foosball. Also, Oklahoma is redder than red, and the dominant philosophy in the Republican Party is to tear down public higher education and state flagships. Governor Goodhair in Texas was not an anomaly. Just look at what Rauner and Walker have done to UI and UW respectively. Kasich, thankfully, has been an exception to this.

I don't know about their overall academic strength, but they do have strong programs in earth/petroleum sciences and in Middle East relations. One of Boren's goals has been to upgrade their academics (before the oil revenue runs out).

If Oklahoma is available, you get Oklahoma. Academics can be improved. The economics of the sport of football (in particular) and college athletics in general are going to be increasingly strained in the upcoming decades so you want to add brands that will bring in revenues.

@cincibuck - they also do a lot with meteorology and would be a good compliment to the Pedsters in that department.

Unlike a lot of the baby-boomer Democrats and Republicans of his generation, Boren is a pragmatist and has a long history of being someone who calls a spade a spade and is able to convince people to join his side of an issue.

As we've seen in the 2016 elections, pragmatism has no place in politics these days unfortunately.

Second read on the remarks of Boren - maybe he's talking to Texas - "take down LHN and help me get the others to take in two teams, move the CCG out of Jerry's place and stop being such a revenue hog." - and not to the Big Ten.

The suggestion that Purdue can resemble the University of Chicago in any way is laughable. And this comes from a Purdue graduate.
