There's been a report out there for a while that Texas and ND want to play only 7 Big Ten conference games while other teams would play 8. And that they're looking for some BCS/conference title concessions in the event of a 7-0 Texas/ND and an 8-0 team at the end of the season.

That scenario just seems bizarre to me, but supposedly it's part of the negotiations between the Big Ten and the folks from Texas and ND.

One possible solution is the Big Ten playing 13 overall games and not have a CCG, and everyone would play 7 conference games - but that would require some NCAA rule changes, since now only Division 1 teams that play a game in your state of Hawaii are allowed to play 13 regular season games (not counting the CCG).
Or the Big Ten+ tells the NCAA to go pound salt, we've got our own TV network plus six top ten programs (OSU, PSU, UM, UNL, UT, ND), and maybe we'll even have our own bowl games, so why do we need your inept, corrupt organization any longer?

Notre Dame I get (with their CIC roundup), but why does Texas need 5 games? So they can have 4 paycheck opponents besides OU?

The Pac-10 plays 9 conference games as opposed to the Big Ten's 8 conference games. Is the PAC-10 going to let Texas play only 7 conference games if Oklahoma goes to the SEC. Even if Oklahoma follow them to the PAC-10 the schedule would be the same in the Big Ten. They would have 8 conference games, a home and home (or neutral site) game with Oklahoma, and 3 other games that they could schedule whoever.

Just as a side note, based on the handful of moves so far here are the number of top 25 teams by conference based on the final rankings from 2009:

Big Ten - 5

Mountain West - 4
ACC - 4
SEC - 4

Big East - 3

Big XII - 2

PAC 10 - 2*

MAC - 1

Notre Dame - 0

* One of these two teams is no longer eligible for post season play and the second merits some special qualification of their own - but hey, the weather is nice and it is still a hell of a conference, right?

Note: A fully merged Big XII/PAC 10 still has fewer top 25 teams than the current Big 10.

(I hope these numbers are correct. Now that there are 10 teams in the Big XII and 12 teams in the Big 10 I tend to get confused.)

I wish more schools/people would think this way. The NCAA is supposed to be representative of its member schools. Somewhere along the line it became its own entity entirely and now RULES its member schools...

...kinda reminds me of the OHSAA.

Maybe they want to continue spanking A&M, or have flexibility to play Arkansas again? I dunno, just bringing up what PBC wrote.

it has everything to do with still playing ou and aggy while not giving up a couple of cupcakes. That may not be popular to say but Texas can sell out a 100k stadium even when arkie st is in town. Thats a ton of money and a sure win.

Those early season cupcake games, much like confrence realignment, are all about money

Gee that's what they thought in Ann Arbor too.

Off topic: but yeah, I have a pedobear app for my iPhone. Even creepier: my girlfriend found it for me. I think it is only for jailbroken phones, but being able to insert pedobear in any lovely picture somebody sends me has made my life so much better.

Not to confuse you anymore, but until July of next year, The Big 12 still has 12 teams and the Big 10 still has 11 teams.

So, technically, nothing has changed!

No worries - you couldn't possibly confuse me more than I already am.

To be honest I kinda liked it when only Colorado had moved and all three conferences had 11 teams.

As a former Database Administrator and former Data Administrator let me sum up the problems thusly - never make an attribute part of your key.

The conferences whose names are based on geography have the same potential problem. Only Conference USA got it right - unless they want to someday pick up the University of Toronto.

The way I see this playing out, TX would be happy to go to the Pac 16. Now that the Big 12 is dead, it's time to kick it up a notch. Set a deadline/regent's meeting for Tuesday morning, giving the Big Ten a weekend to get their shit together. TX is probably asking for concessions that until now the Big Ten thought they'd be able to negotiate out of the deal. Now the Big Ten's on the clock, and they need to decide whether to call TX's bluff and potentially let them walk out the door, give in to all of TX's demands, or come up with a last minute compromise.

Potential roadblocks that I could see from TX point of view:
- Number of conference games
- How the conferences or pods are aligned
- Can the baseball program go independent
- How soon does each new school gain a full share in BTN and related revenues
- How to appease TX legislators and not look like the bad guy
- How to continue playing your two rivals, aTm and OK

I think the Pac16 option would be fine with some people in the TX administration, but I don't think they're ecstatic about it. They probably feel it's a good enough Plan B (or Plan 1a) that it's time to call the Big Ten's bluff and force their hand.

Once the Pac10 goes to 16, and the SEC is probably on it's way to 14 or 16, there's no turning back. Only a matter of time until the Big Ten is forced to add 2-4 teams. The question for Delany is, do you want to be the last one to expand and pick from the Big Least scraps, or do you give in to some of TX's demands now with the understanding that a Big 13 with TX is a lot more appealing to ND?

Other than Texas, what other team is going to be snagged before the big ten can do so? I don't see much overlap if any with the B10's prospective targets.

Syracuse is the only one I could see heading elsewhere (ACC).

We don't want Pittsburgh.
Rutgers & the BTN are a dream match.
Missouri appears to be out in the cold, and they'd rather come here than anywhere else, especially a tiny conference, where they might be headed with Kansas.
Maryland might not come here, but they're certainly not heading to the academic cesspool of the SEC.

Georgia Tech is a mediocre addition for the SEC. They have that market already. There's also skepticism about how high GT is on the B10's list.

Why are ND and Texas asking for 7? Because conference games are all on home and home basis thus they put a limit on the number of home games a school might have during a season. 8 conference games means 4 at home, 4 on the road. Seven would mean an extra home game every other year.
