Rumor from PBC that Notre Dame and Texas offers are contingent on them getting permission (exemption) to only have seven conference games instead of eight. Texas to protect their OU game, and Notre Dame to protect their USC game, presumably.

If this is the case, I say no to both. This kind of unequal treatment is what did in the Big 12. No favoritism for ND or Texas.

An interesting theory put forth by PSUPatR on the NW'ern Rivals board (in the same thread that PBC has been posting in).

Link

I think it's A&M's second best option. They wouldn't be caught dead in Berkely! But the first option is dependent on UT.

1. Go to the Big 10 WITH UT.
2. Go to the SEC alone.

Another hypothesis: If I had to guess, I'll say not accurate, but it's possible. Maybe UT does want the Big Ten but they don't want Aggy along. Keep taking a step towards the Pac 10, and Aggy takes another towards the SEC. Eventually, Aggy jumps first, at which time UT can give it's best Simpson's "Nelson" laugh.

I enjoy that thread a little more each time EvanstonCat (with his references to "dOSU" and the "We're not elitist, we're just better than you." signature line) misspells a word (e.g., "marquis" for marquee, and "obstinant" for obstinate). Edit - I normally wouldn't point out spelling errors from another board, but E-Cat takes shots at tOSU, has been banned for trolling on Buckeye boards, and copy/pasted an article that osugrad21 placed in this thread without attributing it to him or BP.

FYI, I moved the recent posts about how the Big Ten might split into divisions into the separate thread on that topic, in this same foum. BP

I can create another thread if the discussion on the pros/cons of NCAA oversight will continue; that's a legit topic, but probably should be a separate one.

I think this thread is most useful if it's focused on the speculation regarding teams moving into the Big Ten and/or other conferences.

Nebraska/OU used to be one of the biggest rivalrys in college football, and now they aren't even in the same conference anymore and the rivalry is dead. Amazing what can happen in just over 10 years. I know the Big 12 wasn't that old, but the Big 8 that joined the Texas schools was. The fact that the orginal Big 8 is now breaking up is kind of amazing. Imagine if things had worked out differently in history, and it was Big Ten teams who were bolting for other conferences.

The fact that Big Ten has turned into the conference that everybody wants to go to, not bolt from, make me proud to be a Big Ten fan. For a time it had seemed like the Big Ten always wanted Notre Dame, but couldn't get them to come. Now with the addition of Nebraska, it reaffirms that big time schools do want to come to the Big Ten, just like Penn State does, and Notre Dame is full of a bunch of arrogant idiots.

And as much as I value the traditional rivalries myself, change happens.

If you try to build the conferences of the future around the need for two teams to play one another on a regular basis the result will be less stable than it need be.

This principal applies universally - with the exception of OSU-Michigan of course.

My random thoughts on how this all plays out.

  1. Big Ten tells UT to take its special treatment requirements and shove them up their burnt orange ass. Domers wait and pray that this means they can remain indy.
  2. Pac 10 takes UT, TT, OU and OSU, but....
  3. Aggy--mortified at the thought of having to march the Corps of Cadets into Memorial Stadium in Berkeley or have their alumni humiliated every other year by the Stanford band and wanting to escape UT's shadow--moves to the SEC and, in a surprise move, takes Baylor with them. SEC gets a strong presence in Texas for recruiting purposes. Texas politics become even more fun to watch from afar.
  4. Pac 10 takes Utah to go to 16 and become the first superconference.
  5. SEC raids ACC for FSU and Clemson to become second superconference.
  6. Ball is the court of the ACC (needs to add four schools) and the Big Ten (needs to go Curtis LeMay on the Big East to force the domers' hand). Big Ten adds Rutgers with the intention of giving the domers the opportunity to play in NYC metro area every other year (and provide a strong card for BTN to play in NYC cable negotiations), then adds Syracuse ( to further lock down the NYC market) and finally desperately pleading Mizzou (for regional balance)
  7. ACC adds WVU, PITT, UCONN. They make a play for the domers by promising to carve out a special treatment clause, but the domers finally take their eyes off the alter boy and see the writing on the wall and join the Big Ten.
  8. The last school for the ACC is the rubb: Cincy and Louisville have marginal football potential and are not geographically well suited. USF, Memphis and Temple are all considered but as extremely weak choices. Not sure where the ACC goes on this one. KU is great basketball but would be a lonely geographic outpost and has a "KSU Problem." It could be any one of these schools. Nothing jumps out at me.
  9. MWC (standing at nine having lost Utah but picked up Boise) makes a last desperation attempt to be the 5th superconference by adding the B12 refugees (ISU, KU and KSU) to the East and Nevada, Fresno State, Hawaii and Utah State to the West. It doesn't work. Orrin Hatch, happy that the Utes are covered, keeps his mouth shut and thkey're left out.

More shameless self promotion, because that's what I'm good at

Here's an article I wrote that osugrad was kind enough to post in here. It took awhile to get this cleared to run but since it's been getting passed around on boards I'm glad that it now has a link behind it. So thanks to grad again, the original running title was The Chip Brown Circus but we had to alter that a little!

Nick Leach | Sporting an opinion

We like Chip Brown, we really do. His work at Orangebloods.com played a large part to give this expansion the jump start it needed in making June a relevant month in the college football circus. His early information also proved to be mostly accurate. The problem was, and to no fault of his own, Chip decided to take the ESPN and national media carousel journey which was the beginning of the end for his information and let us tell you why.

By going mainstream as the face of the information break, Chip put himself in a tough position. With all the national media focused on his tweets, twits, twerts, and whatever else he posts he became a target of schools and conferences alike.

Hope you enjoy it.

I'm not sure who the ACC adds from this bunch in your scenario either, but I don't think either UC or Louisville is materially worse in football than the current ACC line up. It might come down to academics, in which case I think UC gets the nod over Louisville based on the relative size of their research budget and endowment.

Greatest SEC thread....EVER!

For what it's worth, I really want to see Aggy go to the SEC and take Baylor with them. It totally blows up Texas' little plan of a hostile takeover of the Pac 10 wile spitting in their face and giving the SEC major recruiting inroads into the state.
