I've never had any doubt about the character of Chad Johnson, and it's a shame that Bengal fans are just now having to see what kind of a selfish, arrogant, narcissistic prick he really is.

I hope they don't give into the demands of Ocho Stinko. Lewis will be gone after this season and they can do a housecleaning. I'm sure the Cowboys would take any of the felons on the Cincy roster.

When does his contract expire? Seems like a lost cause, might as well get some value for him while it is still high.

I think he has a couple of years left, as they reworked his contract and gave him more money. Actually it's not a lost cause at all. All the Bengals have to do is put up with his mouth for a couple of months. He has to perform at a high level, due to incentives in his contract. He won't miss the season opener. This is not new ground for Cincy as Corey Dillon whined for years, to no avail.

From 2006 --
The three-time Pro Bowl performer and consummate showman, one of the most explosive playmakers in the league at any position, on Thursday signed a new contract with the Bengals, ESPN.com has learned. The lucrative deal includes a one-year extension, through the 2010 season, and an option for the Bengals to extend the contract through 2011, if they so desire.
In essence, by restructuring the remainder of Johnson's existing contract, which was set to run through the 2009 campaign, the Bengals created a six-year deal with a total value of $35.5 million.
Big cap hit implications if the Bengals deal Chad.
the Bengals would take an $8 million salary cap hit by trading Johnson before June 1.
While the Bengals aren't always known for their business acumen, even they can figure this one out.

In response to the release of Chris Henry and the dwindling receiver corps, the Bengals signed free-agent wide receiver Doug Gabriel to a one-year contract. With 101 catches, Gabriel becomes the team's most experienced NFL receiver behind T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson. Antonio Chatman, heading into his sixth season, has 93 career catches.

Without knowing his specific health / injury status, I initially like this pickup. He seemed to have some skills/potential with the Raiders. He's got some height (6'2"). And with only a 1 year contract, I look at it as a low risk aquisition.

...probably helps the Bungles keep the pressure off from drafting a WR 'till after the 2nd or 3rd round, hopefully.

Unless someone very unexpectedly falls into their lap in one of those rounds, I'll be pissed if they go any direction other than defense the first 2 rounds, specifically Sedrick Ellis or trade down @ the #9 pick.

Me too, unless they get rid of our management. If we don't use our first 2 picks for our front 7, they deserve 10 more years of losing. Problem is that we don't.

Dispatch

With Henry gone, there is speculation that the Bengals are looking hard at Oklahoma receiver Malcolm Kelly with their first pick (No. 9 overall) in the NFL draft.
After an indoor workout for NFL scouts in Norman this week, Kelly met privately with the Bengals; he was scheduled to meet with officials from Minnesota and Washington. Buffalo, which has the 11th pick, also has expressed interest in the wideout.

And the Bengals select ...
USC's Sedric Ellis - in our mock draft, that is
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The NFL Draft is two weeks away. The Bengals, with the ninth overall pick, have a need at defensive tackle and also appear to be seriously considering a wide receiver. Here is reporter Mark Curnutte's mock draft:
1. Miami Dolphins
Chris Long, DE/LB, Virginia
New football boss Bill Parcells, tempted to take Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan No. 1, goes instead for a player around whom the Dolphins can rebuild their franchise. They're also talking to Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long as the potential No. 1, trying to get a contract in place before the draft.

2. St. Louis Rams
Jake Long, OT, Michigan
The Rams need to improve their pass rush, and they like Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston. But they allowed 48 sacks last season and need to rebuild their offensive line.
(Previous: Jake Long)
3. Atlanta Falcons
Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU
The Falcons also like QB Matt Ryan, but Dorsey would make an immediate contribution in the middle of an aging defense, depleted by injury, that was 26th against the run in 2007.
(Previous: Dorsey)

Five questions the Bengals must prioritize before the 2008 NFL Draft and on the eve their smashmouth schedule against the AFC South and NFC East gets released Tuesday.
1. Can they count on linebackers Ahmad Brooks and Odell Thurman?
Although Thurman could be reinstated this week, head coach Marvin Lewis is already on record saying the Bengals can't count on him

Chad will be back and he will play well. If the team continues to struggle, I have no doubt that he will continue to vent. But if they start winning, he will be the first to celebrate.

Sure about that?

ESPN - Johnson says he won't attend team functions, demands trade - NFL

Look, I know Bengals fans don't want to admit it because they've been defending this asshole and his antics for years, but let's be realistic... He's trying to blow up your locker room TO-style.

I say the Bengals should just hold on to him rather than giving into his demands. If they get stuck with just a third- or fourth-round pick on a trade, wouldn't it just be worth it to hold onto him out of spite and to deter other players on the team from using hardball tactics?

I may not be speaking for them now, but in four months, Bengals' fans will join my chorus of "Fuck Chad Johnson!"

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the guy. Most of his antics have been silly and harmless and I've always defended them as such. He's struck me as goofy and over-the-top, but not particularly cancerous to the team. Perhaps I've given him too much credit. :sad2:

That being said, I wouldn't put it past him to show up in great shape laughing about the media thinking he was serious about all this. Or maybe I'm delusional. That's always a possibility, too. :p
