this comes from one of the bengals message boeards, the guy has seemed to know what he was talking about in the past.

This one is actually simple.

Rogers was due $1 million in a bonus payment come 12:01 am today, which has already passed. Detroit wanted him gone so that they didn't have to pay that $$. The Bengals were set to make the trade but had to get an exemption from the league because the $1 million would have gone on last year's cap (and we don't have any room left).

The league said "No" thereby leaving Detroit with about 3 hours to make a move. Cleveland knew the price (of a third and a fifth) and exchanged the fifth with Leigh Bodden in their offer. Detroit was happy with that because Bodden is better than any CB they have (and thus the Cleveland deal was better for the Lions than that from the Bengals).

Bengals miss a tackle
NFL quashes deal for Rogers, but changes clearly are on the way for team's defense
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The reason wasn't clear, but the trade of defensive tackle Shaun Rogers from the Lions to the Bengals didn't happen Friday.
Theories as to why ranged from the league stepping in because the trade violated a salary-cap rule to one that the trade never was reported to the NFL office, leaving the Lions free to negotiate a deal with another team. Another potential explanation was faulty language in the trade that forced the NFL to void it.
The Bengals had no comment Friday night on the situation.

Wow, latest spin job from the Bengal Mouthpiece: Cincinnati Bob-knob (from bengals.com)

1. Where's Roger?: Yeah, the first hours of free agency were as frenzied as ever. But I Believe I Think I Know that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell didn't hand out the Lombardi Trophy after it was over.

If he did last year, he would have given it to Seattle, the Pats, or maybe even Denver. The team he actually gave it to, the Giants, made basically one move last year. It was a good one, Kawika Mitchell, but it was only one.

Seattle couldn't get over the hump with Patrick Kearney and Deon Grant, the Niners went sub .500 despite Nate Clements and Michael Lewis, and Denver missed the playoffs for the second straight year despite making 14 different acquisitions last season. Remember how vets fled Buffalo last year, but their homegrown line kept them afloat?

New England cashed well at 16-0, but the Steelers are unflinchingly letting Alan Faneca go a year after letting Joey Porter walk while they were on the way to winning the AFC North.

The Bengals need to get some guys, but there is no champagne yet.

2. STAT OF PRESEASON: I Believe I Think I Know the Bengals are putting a lot of energy into beefing up that front wall in free agency and the draft, and they have to. Banged for not banging people, the Bengals play the most physical offenses in football against a schedule that includes six of the top 10 rushing teams from 2007:

Jacksonville (2), Pittsburgh (3), Giants (4), Tennessee (5), Philadelphia (5), Cleveland (10).

3. WEIRD DAY: I Believe I Think I Know that Friday was one of the weirdest days in Bengaldom.

How about this? With all the scuttlebutt running so rampant about free-agency tampering last week in Indy, the NFL steps in on what appears to be an obscure technicality to nix the Shaun Rogers trade. It's like flicking a cigar ash when the house is on fire.

But you know what they say. Some of the best deals are the ones you don't make. The guy is a marvelous player, no question. And there's no question he fits exactly what the Bengals need. But he has a lot of issues, too, ones we have seen more times than a bad '60s sitcom.

But you have to hand it to Bengals president Mike Brown and Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis: Daryl Gardener. Warren Sapp. Sam Adams. Shaun Rogers. They know what they need and they're going to keep trying to get it.

Move to 3-4 adds up
Scheme seems to fit club's personnel well
ANALYSIS BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals are considering a switch of their base defense to a three-lineman, four-linebacker scheme.
They've primarily played a 4-3 (four defensive linemen, three linebackers) under Marvin Lewis and might stay that way. Much of the decision will hinge on their front-seven personnel.
But as they stood after the activity of Saturday, Day 2 of NFL free agency, the Bengals looked more like a 3-4 defense in the making than their 4-3 selves.

Bengals perennial free-agency also-rans
HERE'S THE SKINNY
BY RICHARD SKINNER | ENQUIRER CONTRIBUTOR

March is supposed to roar in like a lion each year, but where the Cincinnati Bengals are concerned it's more like a muffled meow because March also means the start of free agency, which usually sees our beloved local 11 sitting idly by as good players bolt for greener pastures.
Strangely enough on a defense that lacks the star power of the offense, it's been the defensive side of the ball that has taken its lumps in free agency over the years, with this year possibly taking an exceptionally big bite. Madieu Williams and Justin Smith are already gone, and Landon Johnson is likely to follow.

Bengals sign DE Antwan Odom.

Great pickup for the Bengals should more than compensate for the loss of Justin Smith. As far as 4-3 vs. 3-4 goes, Odom can play both so really no indication. I expect LB and DT to be targets in the draft now...

Bengals sign defensive end Odom

Tuesday, March 4, 2008 3:03 AM

Stymied in their first and perhaps second attempt to bolster the defensive line, the Cincinnati Bengals succeeded in their third attempt. They signed free-agent defensive end Antwan Odom to a five-year contract last night, adding a gifted pass rusher to a defense long in need of one.

Lewis: Other deals possible
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

At a news conference introducing defensive end Antwan Odom this morning, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said a possible trade for Jets defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson is not completely dead yet.
"I wouldn't say that. You know, I don't think that would be true at all," Lewis said when asked if the door has been slammed shut on the deal.
Lewis spoke as the Bengals introduced Odom, who was signed Monday to a five-year, $29.5 million deal after four seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

By letting defensive end Justin Smith leave and signing Antwan Odom from Tennessee, the Cincinnati Bengals saved money short term and long term while getting a younger player who is coming off an eight-sack season (Smith had 2? sacks).
The concern with Odom is that he benefited last season by playing on a line with Kyle Vanden Bosch and Albert Haynesworth, each of whom occupied double teams. Odom acknowledged it during his introductory news conference and said he is looking forward to proving himself away from the Pro Bowlers.

Work's not yet done
More help is needed - on 'D' in particular
ANALYSIS BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

The Bengals, like most other NFL teams during the first two weeks of veteran free agency, remain a work in progress.
They have been intent on trying to upgrade a defense that was ranked 27th in yards allowed and 24th in points allowed in 2007.
The Bengals have let some of the most familiar names on that defense leave via free agency - including 2007 starters Madieu Williams at free safety, Justin Smith at end and Landon Johnson at linebacker. And they tried to trade for defensive tackles Shaun Rogers and Dewayne Robertson, but neither deal panned out.

NFL Insider
Bengals still could acquire DT Robertson; Would be a less risky deal after June 1
BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected]

Quality defensive tackles are becoming a premium around the NFL. Just ask the Bengals.
They tried to trade for Detroit tackle Shaun Rogers. And the Bengals had a trade in place with the Jets for Dewayne Robertson in exchange for fourth- and fifth-round draft picks.
The league scuttled the Rogers trade, buying the Browns a sliver of time and a second chance to sweep in and offer Detroit what it wanted in the first place, cornerback Leigh Bodden.

Not a bad pick up, and looks like they are trying to add decent depth to the lb's which killed them last year.

Cincinnati Bengals, National Football League - CBSSports.com

CINCINNATI (AP) -The Bengals agreed to terms on a one-year contract Monday with unrestricted free agent linebacker Darryl Blackstock, his agent said.

Agent Brad Blank would not discuss terms of the deal, but said the 24-year-old Blackstock planned to sign Tuesday.
The 6-foot-4, 244-pound Blackstock has 44 career tackles and four sacks in 46 games with the Arizona Cardinals, who chose him in the third round of the 2005 draft. He had 21 tackles and three sacks last season.
