BCS Chances (El Gigante Merge)

Did anyone else hear Junker's phone call on channel 6/8 this morning saying he thought 3 times in 4 years was too much?

I'm so confused. First we're a lock for ND/OSU Fiesta, then we're not allowed because we've been too much....does this mean anything at all???

I'm filing that under "keeping West Coast hopes alive" till further notice.

so oregon's head coach was just on the best damn sports show period "politicing" for oregon, and consequently against ohio state and ND. Mack Brown was absolutely fried after he did the same thing last year. I am just curious what everyone thinks will be the fall out of this. Will there even be a fallout? I believe that he is doing the right thing by pleading his case. I do, however hope that he fails in his quest.

I do see a difference (albeit perhaps small and academic) in campaigning for bowl selection like Oregon and ND are doing and campaigning for AP/Coaches votes like Brown did. I imagine campaigning for bowl bids is a pretty common practice.

I tried measuring that difference using my best instrumentation - to no avail. :wink2:

As it looks like ND-OSU in the Fiesta I was wondering if you guys would like all the daily SBTribune articles about the match-up posted? I thought I would get your opinions first.
I don't think it's looking like ND-Ohio State for sure anymore. I think anything could happen. Sugar, Orange, or Fiesta. I think Notre Dame is a lock in the Fiesta. But they may be playing PSU or WV.

Yes I heard it. I don't think we are a lock. I don't even know that it is likely anymore. It's hard to tell what rumors are true and which aren't. I'd say that we are probably a lock for a BCS bowl...and that's about all right now.

Mack may have been fried, but Texas got the game.... I'm not asserting that Cal was the better team (and don't measure them by the team that got crushed in their bowl game, they were pretty banged up by then)... but it broke precedence in not selecting the Pac 10 Runner Up. It's that kind of thing that leads med to conclude that bowl game selections have more to do with politics than athletics.

There is a contest going on in Cowherd land about which team is the least deserving of a BCS bowl. My daughter really wants an Ipod so I put together this entry. I am sure you'll will recognize the tune.

There, I said it.
Now before all the Ohio State hate mail turns into Oregon hate mail, let me explain.
With just a few days before all the bowl matchups are announced, I've finally given up on my Oregon to the Fiesta Bowl prediction.
After working the phones all week and talking to numerous bowl officials, the overwhelming opinion is that Ohio State is pretty much a slam dunk to earn that at-large spot.
Despite going 10-1 and a heavy pressure from Oregon and the Pac-10, the Ducks are going to be relegated to the Holiday Bowl.

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=2 width="45%" align=left border=0><TBODY><TR class=bg0><TD colSpan=2>BCS Bowl Predictions </TD></TR><TR class=bg1><TD>Bowl </TD><TD>Prediction </TD></TR><TR class=bg2><TD>Rose </TD><TD>USC vs. Texas </TD></TR><TR class=bg2><TD>Fiesta </TD><TD>Notre Dame vs. Ohio St. </TD></TR><TR class=bg2><TD>Orange </TD><TD>Penn State vs. Va. Even though the Buckeyes will be making its third Tempe apperance in the past four years, the thought of having two of the biggest programs in the nation meeting for only the fifth time in history is too big to pass up.
Add in these three facts: John Junker, the head of the Fiesta Bowl, rooted for the Buckeyes as a child; Fiesta Bowl CFO Stan Laybourne graduated from Ohio State. Buckeyes A.D. Gene Smith used to be a Fiesta Bowl board member.
It's going to take a lot of money from Oregon gradutate and Nike co-founder Phil Knight to overcome that trio.
A few weeks ago, I really believed the Fiesta Bowl was going to cave to the pressure of the Pacific-10 and pass on the Buckeyes.
But the folks in Tempe can't afford to have another dog game. Since 1990, 11 games have been decided by 17 points or more. Oregon vs. Notre Dame has the bigger potential to be a blowout than Ohio State vs. Notre Dame.
The BCS bowls are also not about giving bids to the most deserving teams, they are about providing a matchup that will provide excitement for TV ratings, fans and media coverage.
Ohio State vs. Notre Dame does that in every aspect.
I know many "average" college football fans and Oregon vs. Notre Dame to them is ho-hum, while Ohio State vs. Notre Dame is a "big-time" matchup.
Sorry Ducks, maybe next year.

News and Notes
  • The Holiday Bowl is waiting to see what happens to Oregon and the BCS, but if Ohio State grabs that at-large, Oregon will most likely matchup with Oklahoma in San Diego. If Oregon earns a BCS bid, the Holiday Bowl will take UCLA, but not Oklahoma. The Sooners and Bruins already played this season, meaning Nebraska is most likely headed to San Diego. If UCLA upsets USC, the Bruins probably get the bid over Oregon.
  • Florida State is looking at either a BCS bowl or the Champs Sports Bowl. If it beats Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship, the Seminioles will land in the Orange Bowl. If they lose, they will most likely fall all the way to the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 27. The Seminoles were most likely headed to the Peach Bowl a few weeks ago, but a loss would give them four consecutive losses.
  • With the MAC having only two bowl slots and Toledo already accepting a bid to the GMAC Bowl, the winner of the Northern Illinois-Akron title game will earn a spot in the Motor City Bowl. The loser will most likely be left out.
  • Nevada is bowl eligible for the first time since 1996 and is drawing interest from three bowls. The Wolf Pack is most likely headed to the Hawaii Bowl, but if Oregon earns the Fiesta Bowl slot, Nevada will meet BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.

That's not all Oregon has done. They sent their A.D. and coach (I think it was those two) to Tempe the week after we beat scUM to grovel, beg, whatever you want to call it. Not to mention the 1/2 page ads they took out in USA Today advertising the team's players.

I said it last year, and I'll say it again--I don't like coaches taking such actions. BCS spots should be rewarded by on-field merit, not by which school has the best lobbyists. I'm proud of JT for not doing such things, but rather letting our actions on the field speak for themselves.

I was going to comment on this until I realized that it's not worth commenting on... Ohio State was probably more likely to go to Tempe back when this 'expert' was 'certain' that it was going to Oregon... :roll1:

Yeah, I assume he thinks that ND is sure to win, but will not blow us out as bad as they would Oregon. what a tool.
However, he could mean, given the tone of his op-ed, that Oregon would blow out ND worse than tOSU will.
Of course, my opinion is that tOSU has a good chance of blowing out either team. If his definition of a "dog game' is > 17 point spread, then get ready to hear some barkin'!

Has anyone seen any hypothetical betting lines? I would think tOSU will be favored against ND.
