BCS Chances (El Gigante Merge)

I know that the rose bowl "owes" the fiesta bowl a favor for last year. Since Texas should have gone to the fiesta but was "loaned" to the rose. I don't know when all of this is supposed to happen or exactly what the deal was, I just remember it being a pretty big deal

Pretty sure it won't be an issue this year with the Title game...but when the Orange has the 1/2, it could be called in anytime, I guess.

EDIT: Hey, I just made it to 3000! :banger:

This defensive sounding quote from Pac 10 commish Hansen is also informative - on making the effort to state the case for Oregon as a Fiesta at-large:

"And the bowls understand we have to do it, so they shrug and put up with it. It’s not like there are any revelations here, but we have to go through the motions and show support for our institutions."

Going through the motions? - Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Oregon's case if you ask me.

This really isn't in doubt.
  • Only one school has the higher BCS ranking
  • Only one school has been competitive against other BCS teams
  • Only one school travels better (disputed by ORE fans only)
  • Only one school will provide better TV ratings/revenue (disputed by ORE fans only)
  • They're all the same school: The Ohio State University
This is not even worthy of the level of discussion here, and I'm only making the post because it's at the top of the page.

Many Buckeye fans seem to have a mysterious inferiority complex. Why do the rantings of the irrelevant cause so much consternation? When a powerless radio guy says that "everybody outside of Ohio agrees" that OSU doesn't deserve the bid; why does anybody care? Do you really think that the Fiesta Bowl Selection Committee can't take a look at all 3 of the polls, all of the computers, the strength of schedule and the BCS ranking? Do you think they are stupid enough to buy this "everybody outside of Ohio" garbage? You don't end up on a Fiesta Bowl Selection Committee if you're trailer-trash tornado bait. These guys are sharp and they know we're the better team and the better draw.

If Texas wins, we're in. Oregon might get over it, they might not. I don't care.

What do you all think will be the BCS fallout if Texas and USC don't lose? Since it's a pretty good chance that we all know what happens if they both win...i'll share what I think it may look like if we have upsets.

USC beats UCLA, LSU beats UG, Texas beats CU, VT beats FSU

Rose: USC/Texas
Fiesta: Notre Dame/Ohio State
Orange: Virginia Tech/Penn State
Sugar: West Virginia/LSU

*Fiesta chooses Notre Dame first, Orange takes Penn State, then Fiesta takes Ohio State and Sugar takes West Virginia.

USC loses to UCLA, LSU beats UG, Texas beats CU, VT beats FSU

Rose: Penn State/Texas
Fiesta: Notre Dame/Ohio State
Orange: Virginia Tech/USC
Sugar: West Virginia/LSU

*Fiesta chooses Notre Dame first, Orange takes USC, then Fiesta takes Ohio State and Sugar takes West Virginia.

USC beats UCLA, LSU beats UG, Texas loses to CU, VT beats FSU

Rose: USC/Penn State
Fiesta: Colorado/Ohio State
Orange: Virginia Tech/Notre Dame
Sugar: West Virginia/LSU

*Orange chooses Notre Dame first, Fiesta takes Ohio State, then Sugar takes West Virginia.

**Texas get's snubbed due to not playing Colorado for a 3rd time. Unless the Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl are okay with switching host teams, which they could definitely do. But the team with the first pick WILL NOT give up Notre Dame. Then it would look like this:

Rose: USC/Penn State
Fiesta: Virginia Tech/Texas
Orange: Colorado/Notre Dame
Sugar: West Virginia/LSU

I would say this is more likely. Texas would be a big draw to the Fiesta bowl, they beat Ohio State, and you wouldn't have the possibility of Ohio State/Notre Dame. I think both bowls would agree to make the switch of host teams.

USC loses to UCLA, LSU beats UG, Texas loses to CU, VT beats FSU

Rose: Penn State/LSU
Fiesta: Colorado/USC
Orange: Virginia Tech/Texas
Sugar: West Virginia/Notre Dame (haha)

*Sugar chooses Notre Dame first, Orange takes Texas, then Fiesta takes USC and Sugar takes West Virginia.

I'm assuming that USC and Texas would stay ahead of Ohio State in the BCS. If Ohio State was able to move ahead of one of them (likely would be Texas I think) then...

Rose: Penn State/LSU
Fiesta: Colorado/USC
Orange: Virginia Tech/Ohio State
Sugar: West Virginia/Notre Dame (haha)

USC loses to UCLA, LSU loses to UG, Texas loses to CU, VT loses to FSU

Rose: Penn State/Ohio State
Fiesta: Colorado/USC
Orange: Florida State/Notre Dame
Sugar: West Virginia/Georgia

*Orange takes Notre Dame first, then Fiesta takes USC and Sugar takes West Virginia.

**Haha...predicting the computers screw over USC and Texas and jump Ohio State. Honestly, nobody knows what would happen to the BCS if this happened. You could even have USC/Texas in the Rose.

But a VT and LSU loss would get us into a BCS bowl for sure...no matter what, just because we'd move into the top 4 of the BCS.

So...if Texas wins...we are in. Bottom line. If Texas loses, then we may need help from either very nice BCS people...or other teams.

Go Bucks!

I'm also assuming that the Sugar is going to get left with WVU no matter what, just because I can't see ANY bowl wanting them over any other conference champion or possible at large.

the Fiesta would take Oregon over us in that case.....Oregon/CU would have a better draw than OSU/CU.

has anyone stopped to think about the fact that both Ohio State and Notre Dame are at-large selections...? has the precedent been set for a BCS game to have both of the at large teams? i can't think of any other instance... and even if i could remember another Bowl that held both the at-large teams, this would certainly be the first time that the 'at large Bowl' would be more attractive than any of the other bowls, outside of the national title game, of course... kinda wierd, that's all...

I supposed this is true...since Ohio State fans could care less about playing Colorado...whereas Oregon fans just want a BCS game. Personally if it weren't for the money, i'd rather the team play Auburn in the Cap One bowl than play Colorado....but like I said. It's not likely that Oregon gets the nod. Texas would get it...they'd just put Colorado in the Orange Bowl and put VTech in the Fiesta bowl.

It's just that the Pac10 (and the commish especially) don't care about bowl games or football all that much. They just "went through the motions" as other conferences raided our bowl bids, too.

What about UGA then? as a SEC champ, they'd get an automatic bid.
hmmmmmmmm....that brings up a good point. what if these are the BCS standings:

1. Penn State
2. Ohio State
3. Oregon
4. Texas
5. USC
6. Notre Dame

but FSU, Georgia, Colorado, and West Virginia won their conferences?

Ohio State would get the auto bid, being the highest rated at-large team in the top 4. My guess would then be that the other at-large would be ND or Texas (only the highest at-large gets the auto bid, even if in the top 4, I believe, and USC would get the PAC-10).

So it would be PSU/OSU in the Rose
The Fiesta would get Colorado
Orange gets FSU
Sugar gets Georgia

So I'm guessing:

Rose: PSU/OSU
Fiesta: Colorado/USC
Orange: FSU/ND
Sugar: Georgia/WVU
