BCS Chances (El Gigante Merge)

Ohio State would get the auto bid, being the highest rated at-large team in the top 4. My guess would then be that the other at-large would be ND or Texas (only the highest at-large gets the auto bid, even if in the top 4, I believe, and USC would get the PAC-10).

So it would be PSU/OSU in the Rose
The Fiesta would get Colorado
Orange gets FSU
Sugar gets Georgia

So I'm guessing:

Rose: PSU/OSU
Fiesta: Colorado/USC
Orange: FSU/ND
Sugar: Georgia/WVU
But #'s 1 and 2 get auto bids, as do 3 & 4. ND gets an auto bid at 6.

I don't think 3 and 4 do, necessarily....there's some kind of wording in it that says that the highest rated at-large in the top 4 is auto in, and that if you are in the top 4, and the team ahead of you is a conference winner, you are in...in your scenario, that only applies to Ohio State, so they get the only automatic bid. I guess ND would be auto at 6, so that might be the other at-large by default anyway.

Oregon still gets the shaft

hmmmmmmmm....that brings up a good point. what if these are the BCS standings:

1. Penn State
2. Ohio State
3. Oregon
4. Texas
5. USC
6. Notre Dame

but FSU, Georgia, Colorado, and West Virginia won their conferences?

1 and 2 get the Rose, no matter what this year.
USC is in with the stupid Pac-10 tiebreaker.

Also according to the rules, ND is in at #6, as would be the highest ranked non BCS-conference team in the top-6, no matter who they were.
Also according to the rules, Oregon is in at #3 with an at-large.

BCS rules handle this scenario, although 9 teams seem to 'automatically' qualify for bids:
Penn St, tOSU as 1-2
USC, FSU, Georgia, Colorado, and W.Va as Conference champs
ND as #6
Oregon as #3 would not get a BCS bid, nor would Texas at #4.

The non-BCS conference teams that earn an automatic top-6 spot earn automatic spots. Only after this is done, and there is at least one remaining spot, does the #3 and/or #4 rule come into play.

So Oregon would get screwed, despite an 'automatic' spot at #3. That would be entertaining to watch from a safe distance.

oregon head coach on the best damn

so oregon's head coach was just on the best damn sports show period "politicing" for oregon, and consequently against ohio state and ND. Mack Brown was absolutely fried after he did the same thing last year. I am just curious what everyone thinks will be the fall out of this. Will there even be a fallout? I believe that he is doing the right thing by pleading his case. I do, however hope that he fails in his quest.

The way I see it, desperate times call for desperate measures...let 'em beg.

I just got off the phone with our travel agent. I booked a house in Tempe for the week. He claims it is 100% tOSU vs ND. He is so confident he will refund my airfare and move me to another house in the appropriate city if the Fiesta Bowl does not get tOSU....barring any upsets this weekend.

  Notre Dame vs. Ohio State
   There, I said it.
Now before all the Ohio State hate mail turns into Oregon hate mail, let me explain.
With just a few days before all the bowl matchups are announced, I've finally given up on my Oregon to the Fiesta Bowl prediction.
After working the phones all week and talking to numerous bowl officials, the overwhelming opinion is that Ohio State is pretty much a slam dunk to earn that at-large spot.
Despite going 10-1 and a heavy pressure from Oregon and the Pac-10, the Ducks are going to be relegated to the Holiday Bowl.

   <table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="1" width="45%"> <tbody><tr class="bg0"> <td colspan="2"> BCS Bowl Predictions </td> </tr> <tr class="bg1"> <td> Bowl </td> <td> Prediction </td> </tr> <tr class="bg2"> <td> Rose </td> <td> USC vs. Texas </td> </tr> <tr class="bg2"> <td> Fiesta </td> <td> Notre Dame vs. Ohio St. </td> </tr> <tr class="bg2"> <td> Orange </td> <td> Penn State vs. Va. Tech </td> </tr> <tr class="bg2"> <td> Sugar </td> <td> W. Virginia vs. LSU </td> </tr> <tr class="bg4"> <td colspan="2"> <center> Complete Bowl Predictions </center> </td> </tr> </tbody></table>
Even though the Buckeyes will be making its third Tempe apperance in the past four years, the thought of having two of the biggest programs in the nation meeting for only the fifth time in history is too big to pass up.
Add in these three facts: John Junker, the head of the Fiesta Bowl, rooted for the Buckeyes as a child; Fiesta Bowl CFO Stan Laybourne graduated from Ohio State. Buckeyes A.D. Gene Smith used to be a Fiesta Bowl board member.
It's going to take a lot of money from Oregon gradutate and Nike co-founder Phil Knight to overcome that trio.
A few weeks ago, I really believed the Fiesta Bowl was going to cave to the pressure of the Pacific-10 and pass on the Buckeyes.
But the folks in Tempe can't afford to have another dog game. Since 1990, 11 games have been decided by 17 points or more. Oregon vs. Notre Dame has the bigger potential to be a blowout than Ohio State vs. Notre Dame.
The BCS bowls are also not about giving bids to the most deserving teams, they are about providing a matchup that will provide excitement for TV ratings, fans and media coverage.
Ohio State vs. Notre Dame does that in every aspect.
I know many "average" college football fans and Oregon vs. Notre Dame to them is ho-hum, while Ohio State vs. Notre Dame is a "big-time" matchup.
   Sorry Ducks, maybe next year.

   News and Notes

  •
[*] The Holiday Bowl is waiting to see what happens to Oregon and the BCS, but if Ohio State grabs that at-large, Oregon will most likely matchup with Oklahoma in San Diego. If Oregon earns a BCS bid, the Holiday Bowl will take UCLA, but not Oklahoma. The Sooners and Bruins already played this season, meaning Nebraska is most likely headed to San Diego. If UCLA upsets USC, the Bruins probably get the bid over Oregon.
[*] Florida State is looking at either a BCS bowl or the Champs Sports Bowl. If it beats Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship, the Seminioles will land in the Orange Bowl. If they lose, they will most likely fall all the way to the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 27. The Seminoles were most likely headed to the Peach Bowl a few weeks ago, but a loss would give them four consecutive losses.
[*] With the MAC having only two bowl slots and Toledo already accepting a bid to the GMAC Bowl, the winner of the Northern Illinois-Akron title game will earn a spot in the Motor City Bowl. The loser will most likely be left out.
[*] Nevada is bowl eligible for the first time since 1996 and is drawing interest from three bowls. The Wolf Pack is most likely headed to the Hawaii Bowl, but if Oregon earns the Fiesta Bowl slot, Nevada will meet BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl.
