Game Thread BCS Championship Game, tOSU vs. Florida - Jan 8th

TresselOwnsCarr;706689; said:
well, they held tOSU to 29 rushing yards in the first quarter and sacked Troy.. Then late in the second quarter pittman finally got going.
But just from my memory of the game, it didn't look pretty early on. I remember yelling at the offensive line through my tv.

I'm just worried florida's d-line speed might disrupt the running game and pressure Troy more than even scUM did.

Were we just being too conservative? I think the spread sets we ran against scUM will be very successful against UF. The backs will need to pick up their blocks though......You saw the kind of success USC just had running out of the shotgun and those quick passes. I think we can be just as successful.

I believe we have an advantage in the coaching box since JT and his staff have "been there and done that" in a big championship-type setting (read BCS). Florida staff while being in big games within the conference has not had to put up all the media glare and the distractions that a BCS game has. I know Urban had Utah in the BCS against Pitt (but it was Pitt and was not one of the marque match-ups if you consider all the the BCS bowls from that year.)

I just believe that sometimes a coaching staff and the team gets a little tight in big games if they have not experienced them before. Case in point Florida burned all their time-outs early in the 3rd quarter in the SEC championship. That could have come back and bit them.

Even JT is not immune. Remember the NC game against Miami? We had I believe a delay of game because we had the wrong personnel on the field followed by an offsides infraction. We can even talk about the fake field goal early in the game. I don't think the JT of today would have went for it, he would instead have taken the 3-0 lead. I know the circumstances back then were different (underdogs, maybe the staff saw something on film, etc.) but perhaps, perhaps the staff bought into the "we have to make something happen 'cause we are huge underdogs" as trotted out their by the media and public perception.

Nobody is perfect but based on the experiences JT and his staff have already been through I feel very confident (always have) in the brain trust on the other side. If there is a hiccup (and that is a big if) the odds say it will be on the other sideline as they try too hard to be something that perhaps they are not. I could be dead wrong here but just some food for thought.......It will be fun to see how everything plays out on Monday.

Governor's Wager
Friday, January 5, 2007

Governor Charlie Crist placed a friendly wager on next Monday's college football championship game. Crist placed a call to Ohio Governor-elect Tim Strickland to place a bet on the big matchup. Crist will send Strickland some Florida Citrus if the Buckeyes win. Strickland will send Crist some Ohio wine and chocolates that look like buckeyes if the Gators win. Also the governor from the state of the losing team will have to fly the flag of the winning team's state at the governor's residence for a day.

Previews are posted. Be sure to thank the fine folks who have worked so hard all year long putting these together. The concept of BP as a "community project" is really brought to life by these (and many other) fine folks.

I do want to offer my sincere thanks to BB73, BuckeyeRyn, Buckeyeskickbuttocks, Bucklion, DaddyBigBucks, daddyphatsacs, Deety, FKAGobucks877, jwinslow, LordJeffBuck, osugrad21, OSUsushichic, PrincessPeach, and 3yardsandacloud for putting this together and the previews throughout the year. I have gleaned more info on UF from this than trying to sift through the waste at Swamp Gas the past several weeks. I give an extra kudos for OSUsusichic who got flamed over at Swamp Gas for asking about tradtions because there was already another thread (anyone who has been to that site knows it is disorganized chaos at best).

After reading this for the second time, I couldn't be anymore pumped for the game. This is as good as it gets to be a Buckeye fan in my opinion. Just one more. Let's go Bucks!

:oh:

Yeah I mean I won't deny this team is good and they might be one of the faster teams we'll face this year, but on the same token Florida will have faced no one near us as far as talent goes (speed included)...

Really? No one near us?

Sorry, can't go along with that. LSU at least matches us with talent and speed.

The thing that the LSU, and the SEC for that matter, lacked this year was not talent, it was not speed, it wasn't offense, defense or special teams specifically; it was execution. Execution was not great throughout much of college football this year for one reason or another. I don't mean that teams executed poorly all the time. But you saw the 1st half of the Sugar Bowl, right? If LSU executed well against NoD in the 1st half the final score would have been LESS lopsided because the Bayou Bengals would have been playing their 3rd string for the most of the 3rd quarter and all of the
4th.

Boise State showed what a team that executes can do against superior talent just this week. So many so-called experts said they were surprised by Boise State's speed. Baloney. Boise State was no where near as fast as Oklahoma as a group. But if people blow their assignments, they have way too much ground to make up in too short a time. If you stick to your assignments, you don't have to outrun anybody.

It is in this facet of the game that Florida will be "shocked". They will have faced no one that executes with the precision of the Buckeye offense. Ohio State executes football plays, and they will execute the Gators.

They could have at least gotten the governor's name right...

In 10 seconds reading Swamp Gas, I read a post inquiring on a possible Leak injury. The fifth poster was convinced their offense would be more potent without their starting QB.

I think I've become dumber after reading that.

Totally agree with you DBB. You can pretty much line up the top 5 or so teams and they are all going to be equal in talent. Put them in a footrace and you are going to get similar times. Those aren't the things that win games at this level. It starts with preparation, conditioning, and gameplanning. Motivation and heart are big factors, but players have to be put in a postion to win. During the game, it is just as much about playing "smart" as it is playing fast or tough. Doesn't matter how fast you are if you are totally out of position. Playing smart is a key component of exection. The other important factor is the ability to make adjustments. I see it time and again that different teams come out of the locker room for 2nd halves of games. The best staffs use that break to change things up and exploit the weaknesses they have observed. IMO, tOSU is among the best at these intangibles and that is why I am confident in their ability to win this game.

The Herd just had a guy on Spanning the Globe who said Florida hasn't practiced well at all. What a shame

I heard Meyer on the Radio down here in FL. He said that the first practice in AZ was really bad but the next practice was as good as UF had been just before the SEC Championship game, very crisp.

Bruce Hooley from 1460 interviewed Leak yesterday and he commented that Leak did not appear to be at all comfortable in Glendale. As if he is feeling a great deal of pressure. I don't know, maybe that's just the way the guy is, but Hooley said he just appeared to him to be wound up way too tight.

To me Leak is a strange kinda introverted guy. He was a phenom in high school. He looked so promising as a Freshman. I think the key is to hit this guy. I know this is always the key but this guy is much worse than Dorsey. He is very good QB when he has time but he really cracks after being hit.
