Smith, Pitcock earned rings on scout team
By JON SPENCER
Gannett News Service

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four years ago, when they won their first national championship rings, Ohio State's Troy Smith and Quinn Pitcock weren't themselves.
In fact, they assumed different identities.

They were redshirt freshmen and unheralded role players on OSU's scout team as the No. 2 Buckeyes prepared to play No. 1 Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Gator's last trip to the desert...

1996: The last time the Florida Gators were in Arizona for a national championship game was at the Fiesta Bowl against undefeated Nebraska. The Cornhuskers rolled 62-24 to clinch its second consecutive national title. Florida led 10-6 after the first quarter, but Nebraska exploded in the second quarter, scoring 29 points. Nebraska scored two more TDs in the third quarter, highlighted by Tommie Frazier's 75-yard run. Frazier finished with 199 yards rushing, while Lawrence Phillips added 165 yards rushing.

Here is another reason that Ohio State should fell like they are "at home" in the BCS game. The Cardnial's new stadium is having "grass problems" too.

It's been a rough year for the Cardinals' new stadium. The grass won't grow. And the retractable roof has been benched. It seems when the field-in-a-tray comes rolling into an air-conditioned stadium for two days in September and October, the grass begins to think it is winter when it is not. And then it goes to sleep or something.

This game reminds me of a little of 2002, only the shoe is on the other foot. The big difference is attitude. Miami knew that they were going to win (evil grin), and that was a disadvantage for them. I've never seen a more mentally prepared team than tressels squad this year. Troy is a damned machine when it comes to keeping a cool head, and that reflects their whole team attitude. You want see talkers on a Tressel team, they focus on the task ahead, and 99/100 times, they accomplish what they focused on doing. Florida backers are surely getting the bug up their ass due to what the MEDIA is calling this game out to be (a blowout), but you won't see the team ever talking an opponent down. Here's to beating two Florida teams for the crystal ball twice this decade!!!!!

tOSU - 45
UF - 20 (missed xtra point)

Three more weeks? I can't stay awake that long. :!

Maybe it's like Christmas Eve. The sooner you go to sleep, the sooner Christmas morning gets here. All I have to do is figure out how to fall asleep for three weeks, without missing work. And paying bills. And other stuff I have to do.

Meyer turns into mad scientist while prepping for title game

David Jones
News Journal bureau

GAINESVILLE -- Last week, while Florida players were gathered in a meeting room filled with media to talk about the Jan. 8 national championship game, Gators receiver Andre Caldwell was asked if he knew what coach Urban Meyer was doing that day.
