Arizona State Sun Devils (official thread)

I think you're misunderstanding his statements. He's not measuring high school football on the talent it produces. In Ohio, some HS football games draw 30,000+ people.I've been to the Phoenix area, multiple times, and they simply don't care as much about football as the average Ohioan. The number of revered players is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is, Ohio is insane about football, and players who are successful at OSU are living legends.starBUCKS was speaking to the indifference surrounding Robinson's commitment. His production is irrelevant. If a 5-star player from Columbus commits to OSU, there would not only be a significant amount of ink in the local papers dedicated to the commitment itself, but also to follow up stories on the remainder of that recruit's senior season.

ASU may have a good program, but in Columbus, football, at all levels, has crossed over the line from passion to obsession a long time ago, and hasn't looked back since.

Maybe I was misunderstanding some of his statements? I'm not doubting that there is a greater foootball passion in Ohio than in AZ. Phoenix is a Suns town, but there are a lot of passionate Sun Devil fans and the signing of G-Rob meant a lot to us. Maybe not the average fan, but I obviously am more passionate than the average fan. I'm just like you guys. I want a good football team in Tempe, and that means getting good recruits - especially ones that grew up 15 miles from our stadium. Take a step back for a second and look at it from my view point. Would you want anything different?

I appreciate your passion reagdog, but in listing ASUs great players you come up with five players and include Jeff Van Raaphorst. Not only did he play over 20 years ago, but here are some of his accolades:

Honorable mention All-Pac-10 in 1984
1986 ASU team MVP
1984 ASU football most improved award (chosen by teammates)
1985 ASU most outstanding offensive back
1986 member of the East-West shrine game
One of four team captains in 1986

Honorable mention All-Pac 10. East-West Shrine game.

I am underwhelmed.

Since Van Raaphorst played OSU has had over 20 All Americans and two Heisman winners.

This isn't apples and oranges. It is road apples and oranges. The last time the national spotlight was focused squarely on ASU you were losing to us in the Rose Bowl. A season your fans brag about is one of disappointment for us because we feel we should have won the NC.

Sorry. It am what it am.

Following up on these hero vs just a guy from AZ comments. I couldn't see that ever being played out. High School football isn't big enough in AZ, and really neither is ASU football to really create a "hero". Gerrell Robinson commited last year and the hype in local papers was a mere flicker. The real comparison is... go to ASU and be considered a top 20 team for 4 years... Go to OSU and be considered a contender for 4 years. ASU is in that third tier. I'd consider the top tier of OSU, Florida, LSU, USC, Oklahoma... then your Oregons, Georgia, Texas, Wisky and then is the 3rd tier with ASU, Clemson, Virgina Tech, PSU, Cal... all IMO. The only way ASU plays for the Championship is via a "Magical Season".

The last time they had a "magical season" we got john Cooper:biggrin:

wrong. they had a great team that we beat in our last rose bowl appearance.

that being said. asu has a nice program. i dont think we need to measure and compare. reality is they dont compare, not that they dont have a great program, nice tradition etc. sometimes when youre the big dog its ok to give a yorkie a day in the sun... adams isnt bigger than the ohio state program, hed be a nice get but he wont be the downfall... i think its time to acknowledge the the asu program and time for some of you to zip your pants up and put your....

He is the only QB in ASU history to win a Rose Bowl. That brings a little more shine to his name in my eyes.

Ever heard of Terrell Suggs? I don't think his talent was wasted at ASU? I think ASU had 6 or 7 guys drafted in last years draft. You don't need to go to a BCS game to get drafted. So I can't fathom his talent would "potentially" be wasted by going to last years Pac-10 co-champion.

just to clarify what i said, i didn't mean he can't get to the NFL. when i said wasted in a pool of mediocrity i was referring to his 4 years in college. in a dream season ASU might make a Rose Bowl, and that's a huge might with USC doing their thing right now. at tOSU, he'll be contributing to a team that perenially competes for (and wins?) the Big Ten and goes on to play in BCS bowl games.

FYI, I merged your new 'Arizona State Sun Devils (Official Thread)' with an existing 'Official Arizona State Thread', which you had previously posted in. I also edited it for the same reason that your previous post was deleted.

Please don't start threads without searching for an existing thread on the topic.

EDIT - Note to self - Don't criticize posters for starting new threads when a mod split a thread and created a new thread from the post :!
