Archie Miller (Former HC Indiana Hoosiers)

Archie Miller is Dayton?s new coach
By Tom Archdeacon | Sunday, April 3, 2011

University of Arizona associate head coach Archie Miller ? the younger brother of Sean Miller, the former Xavier coach who?s now the Wildcats ultra-successful head coach ? will be the next basketball coach of the Dayton Flyers according to multiple sources.

UD athletics director Tim Wabler ? who admitted he was making the most important hire of his career ? is said to have made the choice late Saturday, after conferring with university president Dr. Dan Curran, who is in China.

Both Foxsports.com and the Tucson Citizen are reporting the hire. Arizona player Derrick Williams also mentioned Miller?s departure via one of his Twitter dispatches Saturday night.

UD's Miller staying busy with recruiting
By Doug Harris, Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 16, 2012

In less than 14 months on the job, University of Dayton basketball coach Archie Miller has signed one recruit from France, another from Canada and also landed the Flyers? first two players from Louisiana.

Asked this week where he might venture next to bolster his roster, Miller said: ?I hope right here in the state of Ohio.?

Miller and his staff inherited a veteran-heavy team, meaning much turnover in a short amount of time. They?ve been cobbling together their first full recruiting class, signing five players so far. That?s in addition to the three that came aboard on short notice last year, France native Alex Gavrilovic, Georgetown transfer Vee Sanford and LSU transfer Matt Derenbecker.

?Our very first class, I?ll say this: I?ll remember it forever because it?s been an exhausting year,? said Miller, who has one scholarship left to give for 2012.

?There?s a lot that goes into signing this many guys in a 14-month period of time. And we?re probably going to have to sign three more rising seniors before we coach another game. That?s our whole team. That?s 12 or 13 players. That?s a big overhaul, and you?ve got to be smart with how you?re doing it.?

Miller purposely hasn?t just scoured the high school ranks to replace graduating players. He?s reserved space for transfers to give the Flyers a veteran presence while the newcomers find their footing.

'Thad spoke very, very highly of Jordan as a player and a person. And I would think Jordan would speak very highly of Ohio State and Thad. But every situation isn’t the right one for you personally. I really trust those guys and I know the environment he’s been in — a Final Four-esque environment for two years, 65 wins and all those practices. He’s bringing a lot of experience at that level for us.”

The 2012 class also includes Columbus Northland forwards Jalin Robinson and Devon Scott, Canadian forward Dyshawn Pierre and Louisiana point guard Khari Price.

Those kids are doing alright. Sweet 16.

Archie is glad to have the extension, I'm sure, but that won't stop bigger programs from knocking at his door. UD will have a tough time keeping him after this tourney run.

Dayton is one of the final 8 teams playing for the national championship for the first time in decades.

As the resident Dayton season ticket holder, I figured I would update this thread.

Archie Miller is quietly doing the best coaching job in the country right now. Shortly before the season the big 7 foot freshman that they were counting on was not cleared by the NCAA. A JC transfer Forward got hurt and is most likely out for the year. Big man Alex Gavrilovic transferred out late in the summer. Back up PG Kyrie Price transferred out. They lost a graduate transfer PG from Oakland for the season do to repeated concussions. The Starting Center and his back up were both kicked off the team. UD has 6 scholarship players and no one on the roster over 6'6".

UD is currently 12-2 with wins over 4 power conference teams and on a 5 game winning streak since dismissing the only big men on their roster. Jordan Sibert is having a fantastic senior season averaging 16 pts 4 reb 2 asst per game.

Is Archie slowing the game down due to his extremely short bench. Hell no. He is pushing the ball off of defensive rebounds and made baskets. Still playing a majority of man to man defense. They do switch into zones ocasionally. They are fronting the post and double teaming from the weakside every time ball is thrown down low. The defensive rotations have been phenominal. Their man to man rotations off of the double teams look like an NBA game. Speed, Percisoin, Hustle, but closing out under control. I'm amazed with what this team is doing. Ultimately, I don't see them making the tourney because foul trouble or another injury will catch them at some point. But this team is one of my all time favorites at UD.

Matta, in big games usually plays only 7 maybe 8 guys with #8 getting just a couple of minutes. If Amir and Trey had been dismissed, I doubt OSU would be any worse off. Sometimes its addition by subtraction.
I'm from the Dayton area, and a very long time Flyer fan, I really believe that UD's record would be worse if the 2 idiots were still on the team.
Archie had no choice, he just had to play the only 7 players he has. And they have all stepped up big time!
Of course they are playing on the razors edge.
Now I think Miller is a really really good coach, and most likely he will be gone much sooner than we want.

You might be right but I do not think it would be "easily" and you cannot be that big of an Ohio State basketball program if you think that. For me once……:banger:

So I'm not an OSU fan because I think they'd lose to a certain team? So what would you think of OSU's chances against Kentcuky? Keep in mind your OSU fandom is on the line, according to your own logic...
