Any Runners? (10K or marathon)

I managed to get talked into doing the Reach the Beach relay in New Hampshire this weekend, filling in for a runner who got injured. Never done one of these super-long relays before, so it should be an interesting experience. Looks like I'll be doing legs of 4.8, 7.4, and 4.4 miles.
Which team were you on? Looks like an interesting event! BTW, here are the results:

Our team was named "Profile Deluxe". The terrain was, unsurprisingly, much hillier than anything you'd find around Columbus. I had a few 300-400 foot climbs and descents, which were plenty for me. The toughest leg climbed about 1400 ft in 8 miles.

We ended up finishing 69th out of 351 teams. Not too bad, but could have been better. I missed a turn at the very end of my second (7.2 mile) leg, went almost 4 extra miles, and cost our team around 40 minutes...could have been top 50 without that. It also scared my team (and especially my wife) half to death to have me go missing for that long. :(

In my defense, it was 3:30 AM, raining, and my headlamp had died!

I never got an exact time (or distance, heh) for that leg, but I was quite happy with my other runs:

4.8 miles in 39.33 (8:14 pace)
4.7 miles in 38.54 (8:16 pace)

Yep! I'm coming down for it. It'll be my first marathon (assuming I finish... heh... crap).

Have you run this before? I assume I can check in on Saturday, right? Also, I heard they won't allow iPod's?!?!? I'm going to be bored out of my mind if I can't listen to music.

Ugh. Either way, I'm finding the 4:00:00 pace team and making them my new best friends.

Yes, I've run Columbus once before, in 2005. This will be my 3rd marathon.

Packet pickup on Saturday is 9 AM to 7 PM. (Link)

I think most marathons officially ban iPods, but they have various levels of enforcement. Depending on how talkative the group around you is, it can actually be pretty fun without one.

And I'm planning on joining the 4:00 pace team too, so maybe I'll see you there. :) I've never (successfully) run with a pace team yet, so it'll be interesting to give it a try.

I don't know if I can hang with the 4 hour pace team, but I finished the Cleveland Half Marathon in 1:51, so I'm sure I can give 4 hours a shot. I can get through 21 miles in 3:10 or 3:15, but I'm completely spent and question whether or not I have another 5 miles in me. We'll see. Maybe the crowd will keep me going.

I'll be the 6'6" dorky looking skinny dude wearing a black OSU hat backwards.

Well, it was a disappointing race for me. :(

I was really hoping to get in under 4 hours, but it was just too hot today. My body was really having trouble already at mile 5, and I pretty much knew at that point it wasn't going to happen.

Thought really hard about dropping out at the halfway point, but I decided to keep going to the end. Might as well finish, even if it's slow.

I ended up running about a 4:39, and I'm not sure there's much I could have done differently today. Hopefully Yertle had a better experience than me. :)

Well, it was my first marathon, and I can honestly say that my #1 goal was to finish on the outside of a body bag. I can happily say that I accomplished that mission.

I started slow, and got to mile 13 at 1:55, which was a good pace for me. Then, after Lane and High, the hill crushed me. As we went up into Upper Arlington (I think that was the suburb), my legs were screaming at me. I think as we came down through the campus, my run wasn't much faster than a walk. Ugh. I ended up running the last mile pretty well, and crossed at 4:15. Not too bad, I guess.

But, you are absolutely right, the hill and heat were a crushing blow that I wasn't prepared to handle. I think with a little better training, and now that I know what to expect a little better, I can break the 4 hour mark in the future.

Either way, I can now officially cross "Survive a Marathon" off of my Life List.

Nice work! I wouldn't be surprised if you came in under 4:00 on a cooler day with the training you did, if you could run a 4:15 yesterday.

My legs weren't in pain so much as I just couldn't feel them. It's amazing how different you can feel in two runs only a few weeks apart. I actually thought to myself during the race, "I did take Claritin, not Benadryl, right?", having made that mistake once this summer. :)

I think if I do another, the next one will be outside Columbus. For me, knowing things like just how long you're going to be running uphill on High Street makes it tougher mentally.

Got to participate in a relay team in the Last Chance For Boston marathon this weekend. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - it's a one-mile loop course, so you go around 26 times for the full distance. I only went around 5 times, though. :)

Even though the scenery doesn't change, it's nice to have your teammates and the crowd there during every mile.
